August 23, 2020 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

irst Reading: Isaiah 56:1,6-7

This first reading comes from a prophet in the Isaiah tradition who preached to Jews newly returned to the Holy Land after their Exile in Babylon. This prophet had a universal outlook and proclaimed that pagans could also become part of God’s people.

econd Reading: Romans 11:13-15,29-32

Continuing the discussion begun in last week’s second reading, the apostle Paul expresses the hope that his Gentile converts will live such righteous lives that his Jewish kinfolk will recognize God’s presence in the Church. Since God’s call is irrevocable, both Jews and Gentiles will inevitably realize that God’s mercy has graced everyone.

ospel: Matthew 15:21-28

In this portion from Matthew’s Gospel, a Gentile woman implores Jesus’ aid. Jesus, at first, seems to hold such pagans in low esteem, but then responds to the woman’s arguments with praise for her faith.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of August 23

RCIA SESSIONS BEGIN IN OCTOBER Do you know someone who would like to become a

Catholic? Do you know an adult Catholic who, for one reason or another, never received their First Communion? Do you know an adult Catholic who never received Confirmation? If you answered ‘Yes’ to one or more of these questions, I ask you to please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 973-539-2141, ext. 15 so that I can speak with them about how they can become Catholic or receive First Communion and Confirmation.

The RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process for people to prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. In the midst of a global pandemic, we are working on a plan to conduct our classes that will likely be a combination of in person, livestreaming and distance learning. But be assured that we will have an RCIA class this year, and, as always, it will be a joy and a privilege to guide our candidates and catechumens to the fullness of sacramental life in the Catholic Church.

PLEASE PRAY FOR MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH

August 23, 2020 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

JESUS GIVES THE KEYS TO PETER

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” [ . . .] you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church . . .

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 16: 13-20)

Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy. Pieces of metal jangling in our pockets that open doors . . . plastic cards on lanyards

around our necks, embedded with codes that give us access to an infinity of data . . . “keyless” systems that enable us to start our car on a cold morning from inside our warm homes.

We all possess keys of every kind — but keys are about much more than their

function. Keys are authority. To be given access to such restricted places requires us to

demonstrate our competence and responsibility to use that access to create and accomplish good for the benefit of all.

Keys are trust. To possess the key to a door or device is to be entrusted with that

mechanism’s responsible use and safe keeping. And keys are wisdom. Certain “keys” are designed to explain and decode, opening us

to new insights and understanding. The study of music, mathematics, genetics and engineering leads us to advances in medicine, architecture and art that are the keys to human progress. Keys are more than what they open — they are signs of potential and promise.

The “keys of the kingdom of heaven” that Christ entrusts to us, his Church today, are

also signs of power, trust and understanding: the “key” to proclaim, in both our parish ministries and our everyday generosity, the presence of God in our communities; the “key” to reconcile and heal the lost and broken; the “key” that opens up the mysteries of

God’s great love for all humanity as revealed to us in Christ. (Connections)

In Christ’s Peace, Father John

ENTRUSTED WITH THE MYSTERY OF FAITH Our faith is a living reality. We believe in Jesus

Christ and try to follow him as his faithful disciples. We do so in many different circumstances and situations. However we always stand in need of guidance and direction to stay faithful.

Adults: In today’s complex world of challenges, how do I maintain an authoritative voice to help move authentically and consistently forward in faith?

Children: How do my parents, my teachers, and the members of my parish community help me to know my faith and grow in it?

CONFIRMATION CATECHISTS NEEDED

Each year, we recruit new catechists for Confirmation Prep. Confirmation Prep is a two year program. Catechists meet with the same group of approximately ten candidates each year. Peer Ministers, juniors and seniors of the parish, assist with each group. The two year program includes service, study, prayer, retreat and community building so that the candidate will feel strengthened in their faith. We anticipate having virtual and face to face sessions one Sunday night per month, September through May. To learn more about becoming a Confirmation catechist or a Peer Minister, contact our Youth Minister and Confirmation Coordinator, Clare Ettensohn at [email protected].

FAITH FORMATION AT ASSUMPTION

We have a new name! Assumption Religious Education is now known as Assumption Faith Formation and our Faith Formation 2020-2021 registration site is open. Please visit the Faith Formation page of the parish website and select from these options: • Family Formation for grades kindergarten through

8th. This approach will appeal to all ages regardless of learning style or special needs. $175 per family; an additional $50 materials fee for 2nd graders.

• Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This is a Montessori approach to the religious formation of the young child ages 3 to 12. Presently, we are accepting new participants ages 3 to 6 to join us in Level I. True Cost or Fair Share.

• Confirmation Prep for our 9th and 10th graders. This will be a blended approach. Some virtual and some face to face sessions. $100 per candidate, per year.

• Classes for our First Communicants will be part of the virtual Family Formation model. There will be additional virtual sessions specifically for 2nd graders. If our new reality allows, we will also have some face to face time with 2nd graders.

Each of these models is fluid and flexible and subject to change, as needed, in order to adhere to all state and church safety measures and guidelines. No one will ever be denied Faith Formation because of an inability to pay.

Please contact [email protected] to discus any questions about our upcoming programs.
