Are you interested in serving your parish family in the capacity of being on the Parish Council?

The Parish Council Members have completed their three (3) year term. They may choose to run again, but will need to be re-elected. We are looking for new and fresh faces to help assist the pastor in the “on-goings” of the parish and offer their opinions and input. There will be 10 elected spaces and 2 appointed spaces.

Purpose: To assist the pastor in his leadership role of planning, organizing, initiating, promoting, coordinating and reviewing the evangelization, worship, Faith Formation and service activities within the parish.

Objectives: To assess adequately the needs of the whole parish and its members, and to develop and implement a pastoral plan which will promote the common good of the parish.

To foster unity and a sense of community in the parish and to coordinate all parish activities in a manner that will best serve the interests of the parish.

If you think you might be interested in being put on this year’s ballot for the parish to vote on, please email your name to Father ST at [email protected] or call the Parish Center at: 973.383.1985.

Thank you for your continued

There are so many ways to help Saint Mother Teresa Food Pantry. Our parish family has been so generous with the variety of groceries we receive every week. We still receive calls from parishioners wondering how else they could help. The answer is COUPONS if you have time and receive a newspaper on Sundays cut those coupons and put them in an envelope with your grocery donation. We shop for the food pantry once a month looking for sales and the coupons will help us save more money and would enable us to get different items. This week our food pantry could use the following items: Depends for women (L and XL), paper towels, toilet paper, deodorant for men and women, shampoo and conditioner for men and women, tissues, jar spaghetti sauce (all varieties), salad dressings, mayonnaise, tuna fish, can chicken, instant oatmeal (all flavors), juice boxes, tea, coffee, sweet cereals and cookies.

Remember to look for those sales!!!!!

Thank you for your continued support of this important ministry

in your parish family.

Who is Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen?

In addition to being pressured to leave television, Bishop Sheen also “Found himself unwelcomed in the churches of New York City. Spellman cancelled Sheen’s annual Good Friday sermons at Saint Patrick Cathedral and discouraged clergy from befriending the Bishop.” Bishop Sheen had become “Persona non grata” in the Archdiocese. Nonetheless, being a man of great faith and forgiveness, Bishop Sheen never spoke publicly about his maltreatment at the hands of Cardinal Spellman but only referenced in passing to his “trials both inside and outside the Church.”

Unfortunately for Bishop Sheen, Cardinal Spellman made good on his threat as his much watched television series was not renewed and the Bishop was transferred to a small diocese in Upstate New York, which Cardinal Spellman and others referred to as an “Ecclesiastical Siberia.”

While serving in Rochester, he created the Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation and spent some of his energy on political activities such as his denunciation of the VietNam War. In 1967, Bishop Sheen decided to give one of the buildings of Saint Bridget Parish to the Federal Housing and Urban Development Program which was to be used for black Americans. There was a protest and an argument with the pastor who stated “There is enough empty property around without taking the church and the school.” The deal fell ultimately through.

On October 15, 1969, one month after celebrating his 50th Anniversary as a priest, Bishop Sheen resigned from his position and was then appointed Archbishop of the titular See of Newport, Wales. Archbishop Sheen continued writing over seventy-three (73) books, many articles and columns. During his visit to Saint Patrick Cathedral on October 2, 1979, Pope John Paul II embraced Sheen and stated “You have written and spoken well of the Lord Jesus Christ. You are a loyal son of the Church.”

An interesting note to put in your warehouse of useless knowledge. The actor Ramon Gerard Antonio Estevez adopted the stage name of “Martin Sheen” partly in admiration of Fulton J. Sheen.

Finally, as if this story could not get any more incredulous, most recently, the Cardinal Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who has spent a million dollars in legal fees over three years in order to block the transfer of Archbishop Sheen’s body where it lay in rest in the crypt of Saint Patrick Cathedral in New York to Peoria, Illinois. And my question is why? (which I have not found a logical answer). Nonetheless, most recently, the Archdiocese of New York lost its multiple attempts at keeping Archbishop Sheen’s body in New York as they were ordered to release his body this week to his 94 year old niece Joan. Interestingly enough, the Archdiocese made this move at 5:00am in the morning in which His Eminence was not present either dur-ing the removal or the transfer of Archbishop Sheen’s body (which he was highly criticized by many online). Additionally, Cardinal Dolan ordered a “media blackout” so that no cameras or video would be present.

I share with you all of this information so you can know the background of the legacy and life of Peter John “Fulton” Sheen. A man that was not only gifted with the ability to teach, preach and heal, but also a holy man that was raised in the life of prejudice, injustice, maltreatment, bias and revenge, unfortunately, all at the hands of “holy” men of God called “Your Eminence,” “Your Excellency” and “Father!”

God help the Venerable Fulton J. Sheen’s cause for canonization and do not be afraid to pray through his intercession for a miracle. Who knows, your miracle could be the final one that is needed to make him a saint!

“You must remember to love people and use things, rather than to love things

and use people.” -Fulton J. Sheen

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was born Peter John Sheen on May 8, 1895 and died on December 9, 1979. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria on September 20, 1919 and ordained

an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York on June 11, 1951. He was then named the Bishop of Rochester, New York on October 21, 1966 (until October 6, 1969). After his resignation, he was raised to the rank of Archbishop of titular See of Newport, Wales which gave him a new title of Archbishop and allowed him to continue his philanthropic works, writing and giving conferences.

He was on the Catholic Hour on NBC from 1930-1950 before moving to television presenting Life is Worth Living (1951-1957). The Archbishop’s final show was The Fulton Sheen Program (1961-1968).

The cause for his canonization was officially opened in 2002 and in June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized a decree from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints stated that he lived a life of “heroic virtues” which is a major step towards beatification and he is now referred to as “Venerable.” On July 5, 2019, Pope Francis approved a miracle that occurred through the intercession of Archbishop Sheen, clearing the way to his beatification.

Peter John Sheen was born in El Paso, Illinois, the oldest of four (4) sons of Newton (imagine) and Delia Sheen. His parents were of Irish decent, tracing their roots back to Croghan County Roscommon, Connacht. Fulton was his mother’s maiden name and he was baptized as Peter John. As a young child, Peter John contracted tuberculosis. After his family moved to Peoria, Illinois, Peter John served as an altar boy at the Cathedral of Saint Mary.

Graduating as the valedictorian at Spalding Institute in Peoria in 1913, he went on to be educated at Saint Viator College in Bourbonnais, Kankakee County, Illinois. He attended Saint Paul Seminary in Minnesota before his ordination on September 20, 1919. Peter John earned a Doctorate of Philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium in 1923. And in 1924, he traveled to Rome where he earned a Sacred Theology Doctorate at the Pontificium Collegium Internationale Angelicum (the future Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, commonly referred to as the “Angelicum”).

As with all things in the Church, there is always another side of the truth as to why things happen the way they do. I have often wondered why Bishop Sheen resigned in the middle of a very popular career and as my paternal grandmother always taught me, “follow the money.”

According to the forward from Archbishop Sheen’s autobiography, Treasure in Clay, EWTN Catholic journalist Raymond Arroyo wrote why Sheen “retired” from hosting Life is Worth Living at the height of its popularity when over thirty (30) million viewers and listeners tuned in each and every week. “It was widely believed that Cardinal Spellman drove Sheen off the air.” He continued: “In the late 1950’s the government donated millions of dollars’ worth of powdered milk to the Archdiocese of New York (then under the leadership of Cardinal Francis Spellman). In turn, His Eminence turned over the milk over to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (which Bishop Sheen was the Director at that time) to distribute to the poor all over the world. Bishop Sheen was demanded to pay millions of dollars to the Archdiocese. Despite the powerful hand of Cardinal Spellman in New York, as well as in the Vatican, Bishop Sheen refused to pay.

Cardinal Spellman took Bishop Sheen and the entire matter directly to Pope Pius XII. Unfortunately, for Spellman, the pope sided with Bishop Sheen as he learned directly from President Eisenhower that the surplus aid had indeed been donated by the United States government to the Church free of charge. We learned that Cardinal Spellman later confronted Bishop Sheen stating: “I will get even with you. It may take me six months or ten years, but everyone will know what you are like.” Bishop Sheen responded: “Jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to genius!”

Pop tabs 2019 Sussex county fair

The Columbiettes are

pleased to report that

our contributions of

POP TABS to support

the Ronald McDonald

House has exceeded

our previous total. This year we collected 95

pounds of TABS. If you were wondering, it takes

approximately 1,430 TABS to equal one pound!

When you do the math, we have donated 135,850

TABS!!

The funds generated from recycling the aluminum

TABS help offset the Ronald McDonald House

expenses.

The Ronald McDonald House serves families whose

children require care at an area hospital by offering

them a homelike atmosphere where they can get

the rest and renewal, they need to be most

supportive of their sick or injured child. Guests stay

at the House regardless of their ability to pay the

requested $10.00 per night donation. The fee is

waived over 80% of the time. However, although

the House has an increasing occupancy rate each

year, the requested donation does not cover the

actual $60.00 per night per room expense of

maintaining the House. Therefore, philanthropic

support to generate additional funds necessary to

cover the House expenses is essential.

You can support the Ronald McDonald House by

collecting the little TABS you pull to open a soda,

soup, pet food, beer or other aluminum cans.

If you have TABS that you want to

donate for the cause, please contact,

Pam Raynor at 862-268-5210, and

she will gladly collect the TABS from

you.
