irst Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9 In this reading, Isaiah of the Restoration proclaims that God’s mercy is generous beyond

human comprehension.

econd Reading: Philippians 1:20-24, 27

This weekend, and continuing for the next few weeks, the second reading will feature portions of Paul’s Letter to the Philippians. The letter is thought to have been written around the year 54 while Paul was imprisoned. In this passage, Paul wonders if he might die before the return of the Lord in glory, but he longs to continue his apostolic work.

ospel: Matthew 20:1-16

This passage from the Gospel of Matthew contains a parable that discloses the dire

economic situation at the time of Jesus. Farmers have lost their own lands and must hire themselves out as laborers on other people's farms. The story’s surprising ending speaks of the generosity of God toward those who have sought the kingdom only recently.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of September 13

RCIA SESSIONS BEGIN IN OCTOBER Do you know someone who would like to become a

Catholic? Do you know an adult Catholic who, for one reason or another, never received their First Communion? Do you know an adult Catholic who never received Confirmation? If you answered ‘Yes’ to one or more of these questions, I ask you to please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 973-539-2141, ext. 15 so that I can speak with them about how they can become Catholic or receive First Communion and Confirmation.

The RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process for people to prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. In the midst of a global pandemic, we are working on a plan to conduct our classes that will likely be a combination of in person, livestreaming and distance learning. But be assured that we will have an RCIA class this year, and, as always, it will be a joy and a privilege to guide our candidates and catechumens to the fullness of sacramental life in the Catholic Church.

September 20, 2020 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

LET’S BE GRATEFUL!

The parable of the generous vineyard owner: “‘Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (Matthew 20: 1-16a)

Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy. Life is not easy right now — for some of us, things could not get any worse. Our frustrations and

impatience get the better of us. We avoid confrontation for the most part, but we quietly seethe at being disrespected or dismissed or overlooked.

Gratitude is a much more difficult attitude to embrace — it demands a total recalibration of how

we look at our life and world. In his book The Lord Is My Shepherd: Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-Third Psalm, Harold S.

Kushner reflects on the importance — and blessings — of gratitude: “I read of a person who had formed the habit of writing Thank you on the lower left corner of

every check he wrote. When he paid his electric bill or his phone bill, he would write Thank you to express his gratitude to the companies that made those services available to him at the press of a button. Even when he paid his taxes, he would write Thank you on the check as a way of reminding himself (he didn’t think the Internal Revenue Service would notice it) that his taxes were the price he willingly paid for living in the United States with all of its benefits. . . .

“Each night as I prepare for bed, I put drops in my eyes to fend off the threat of glaucoma that

would rob me of my sight and take from me the pleasure of reading. Each morning at breakfast, I take a pill to control my blood pressure, and each evening at dinner I take another to lower my cholesterol level. But instead of lamenting the ailments that come with growing older, instead of wishing I were as young and fit as I once was, I take my medicine with a prayer of thanks that modern science has found ways to help me cope with these ailments. I think of all my ancestors who didn’t live long enough to develop the complications of old age, and did not have pills to take when they did.”

The kingdom of God that Jesus proclaims is centered in a spirit of gratitude for what we have

received and the humility to seek to share those blessings with others — and in that spirit of gratitude, we discover the happiness that is centered in the Spirit of God. The workers in today’s Gospel feel cheated by the vineyard owner’s generosity — their resentment at their coworkers’

good fortune diminishes them and clouds any satisfaction in being able to provide for their families. Jesus calls us to a change in perspective: to look beyond what we do not have and realize and rejoice in all that we have been given, including the love of family and friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, the freedom and resources to live lives of fulfillment and meaning. ARE YOU ENVIOUS

BECAUSE I AM GENEROUS? Some Christians cannot accept that we do not need

to work hard to “earn” God’s love. God’s love is unconditional. If we really believe this, we will not mind inviting late arrivals to that same intimacy.

Adults: Have I ever complained because God was generous to others who in my opinion did not deserve it?

Children: Do I get upset when one of my friends gets something that I think I deserve?

A Family Perspective: Take some time this week to engage your family in a dialogue about this parable. Ask everyone how they REALLY feel about the generosity of the landlord. Among children there is a tendency to equate love with gifts and material things. This tendency can devolve into a spirit of entitlement, which runs counter to the spirit of gratitude. Any effort we make to overcome this tendency, to keep love from being entwined with gifts and possessions, will enable our children to accept completely the love that God gives freely and generously.

2020 DIOCESAN MINISTRIES APPEAL

“LOVE THY NEIGHBOR” The 2020 Diocesan Ministries Appeal (formerly called

the ‘Bishop’s Annual Appeal’) is officially kicking-off this weekend. The theme of this year’s Appeal is “Love Thy Neighbor.” It is a vivid reminder, especially as we all face the COVID pandemic together, that what we do for our neighbors in need, we do for Christ himself.

Please support this important cause that helps so many of our brothers and sisters in our Diocese. The Diocesan Ministries Appeal supports the work of our Catholic Charities, priests’ extraordinary healthcare needs as well as Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence, urban elementary schools and seminarian education.

These are all important ministries that touch many lives, and your participation makes this assistance possible. You can give with confidence, knowing that funds from the Diocesan Ministries Appeal are used solely for the causes described in the campaign materials. They are used for no other purpose. For your convenience, you can support the Diocesan Ministries Appeal by making an on-line gift. Simply go to www.2020appeal.org and follow the user-friendly instructions.

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

This week children in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program will begin their year with the Enthronement of the Bible. In this celebration, the children come to know the Holy Bi-ble as God’s Word and therefore the most precious book in the world.

Families may want to discuss: •How can we honor the Bible in our home? •How can we share and live the Gospel in our home?

Choose time for each family member to share a favorite passage from the Bible. For more information on the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program which begins in

September, please contact Tara Speer at [email protected].
