Numbers, Symbols &WordsYour Daily Warmup PuzzlesI n bridge we manipulate puzzles involving numbers, symbols and words and strive for logical solutions (or atleast inspired guesses). In each issue this week we wil lfeature a pair of number/symbol puzzles, an easy one hereon page two, and a harder one on the inside back cover;and, a word puzzle at the bottom of this page. In al l ofthese puzzles, you wi l l be able to solve them withoutguesswork, by logical deductions alone, which is whatwe're al l trying to do at the table.

Today's puzzle is cal led Unruly. We start with a grid ofsquares, some with X or O in them. Your job is to fi l l inthe rest of the grid with an X or O in each cel l , such that:

—There are no three consecutive cel ls horizontal ly orvertical ly with the same symbol . (There wi l l be instancesof three or more consecutive diagonal cel ls with the samesymbol . )

—Each complete row and column contains an equalnumber of Xs and Os.

The easy version is below. Hints, and a more difficul tpuzzle wi l l appear on page 15. Answers wi l l appear intomorrow's Dai ly Bul letin. For more warmups, check outthe word puzzle on page 6.

Word puzzles this week are from an app cal led Unolingo. I t is a crossword without clues! There are exactly26 blanks to fi l l in, and each letter of the alphabet fi l l s one of the blanks. The puzzles are designed so that

only common Engl ish words areused, no centuries-old arcanewords that are found incrosswords. You 'l l do best bylooking for the locations of thehard letters first: QU, X, J . Besure to mark off the letters usedin the checking area beside thegrid to keep track of yourprogress. I t's not as difficu l t asit seems! I did most of these in3-6 minutes.

A l ist of words in the puzzle(in alphabetical order) is onpage 12. I f you need a morel imited hint, ask someone toexamine the word l ist and tel lyou if the l ist contains, forexample, a six-letter wordstarting with D and ending in E.
