David: Kapan pertunjukan akan mulai?Sudah setengah jam kita menunggu!

Nyoman: Mereka sedang menunggu bulan keluar. Lihat di langit,bulan mulai keluar. Sabar, ya? Saya lebih sukapertunjukan di tempat terbuka seperti ini dari pada didalam gedung. Kalau di dalam gedung selalu penuhsesak dengan penonton, sehingga hawa menjadi panas.David sudah pernah menonton tarian Ramayana?

David: Sudah. Di Candi Prambanan di Jawa Tengah. Apakah tariRamayana di Bali sama dengan tari di Prambanan?

Nyoman: Sebenarnya, ceritanya sama. Keduanya diiringi olehgamelan, tetapi di Bali, bunyi gamelan lebih keras dancepat.

David: Oh, begitu.

Nyoman: Walaupun cerita Ramayana berasal dari agama Hindu,tetapi pertunjukan Ramayana di Jawa dipengaruhi olehagama Islam. Jadi, di Jawa gerakan penari lebih lambatdan bunyi gamelan tidak begitu keras dan cepat.

David: Shh… gamelan mulai dimainkan. Saya kira pertunjukanakan mulai.

Kepada Elise yang baik,

Saya mendapatkan nama dan alamat Elise dari majalah Trend.Saya ingin berkenalan dengan Elise. Nama saya Ketut. Saya dariIndonesia. Umur saya 16 tahun. Saya tinggal dengan orang tua saya.Kakak saya tiga, adik tidak ada. Jadi saya adalah anak bungsu. Karenakakak-kakak saya sudah berumah tangga, ada tiga orang saja dirumah kami.

Saya bersekolah di Ubud dan duduk di kelas dua SMA. Ubudadalah sebuah kota kecil di pulau Bali, di sebelah utara ibu kotaDenpasar. Mata pelajaran favorit saya adalah seni lukis. Matapelajaran apa yang paling Elise sukai?

Saya sangat senang karena minggu yang lalu saya menang dalamlomba lukis yang diadakan oleh Departmen Pendidikan. Pesertalomba itu termasuk semua siswa yang berumur antara lima belassampai tujuh belas tahun.

Ada banyak pelukis di Ubud. Bapak saya adalah salah seorangpelukis itu dan sudah melukis selama empat puluh tahun. Dia sendiritidak berpendidikan khusus, hanya dari pengalaman saja. Di Bali,biasanya kebanyakan seniman menerima pendidikan dari kakek,nenek, bapak, ibu, paman atau bibi mereka.

Sudah bertahun-tahun banyak seniman yang datang ke Ubud darisemua pelosok dunia untuk belajar dari bapak. Di antara pelajar-pelajar bapak ada yang berasal dari negara Perancis, Jerman danBelanda. Pada tahun 1990 dia termasuk salah seorang dari 25 senimanyang menerima hadiah seni dari pemerintah.

Ibu saya adalah guru di sebuah sekolah dasar setempat. Ibu sukasekali mengajar anak-anak SD. Bagaimana dengan keluarga Anda?Apa pekerjaan ibu dan bapak Elise?
