† From the Pastor † he story is told of St. Benedict discussing distractions during prayer with a young novice. T h e n o v i c e p r o u d l y announced that he never had a problem with distractions. He could always focus on his

prayers.

To test him, St. Benedict said, ““If you can say the entire Our Father without a single distraction I will give you my horse. The young man couldn't believe his good fortune. So, with great confidence he began, ““Our Father, who art in heaven . . . ” T h e n h e paused for a moment, turned to his Abbot and asked, ““Do I get the bridle too?””

As we listen to the story of Martha and Mary in today's gospel, it is only natural to side with Martha. After all, having an important guest in the house and putting on a big dinner long before the days of modern conveniences was a lot of work. And Mary sat there enjoying the company of Jesus while her sister was carrying water and baking bread and working over a hot fire and setting out the dishes. It just doesn't seem fair.

And then, Jesus sides with Mary, saying she has chosen the better part. It's hard to see the logic. Poor Martha’s hard work doesn't seem to be appreciated.

But, Jesus is pointing out to Martha how easy it is to be distracted from the real reason for which we are doing good things. Martha began putting all her energy and attention into preparing a wonderful meal for Jesus. But then she got distracted, feeling sorry for herself and angry at her sister. She lost sight of the fact that Jesus was the reason she was doing this.

The same distractions blur our focus on Jesus all the time. It could be during prayer, as our mind wanders away

or other people around us bother us by their actions or simply by being there. But, prayer involves our conscious decision to be in the presence of Jesus, to express our needs and our love, and to quietly be loved in return by Jesus. And we don't need to be discouraged when we lose track of what we are doing, because Jesus is right there, ready to resume the conversation as we return our attention to him.

We often decide not to help someone else because they haven't appreciated what we've done for them

before. We look at someone's appearance and decide that it is not a problem to pretend they aren't there or that they don't belong. We hear a good story about someone's troubles and we

can't wait to tell others. We lose sight of Jesus in the center of all this. We would be uncomfortable acting and thinking in that way if he were there –– but of course, he is.

We have suffering and troubles in life when so many are perfectly happy and healthy. We are alone and look at all the happy families around us. The economy fills us with anxiety for the future, and yet so many others have money to waste. Life seems so unfair. Yet, Jesus is there, inviting us to find meaning in our struggles because they are related to his embrace of the Cross. Jesus is there with us, loving us, strengthening us, promising us that he will not forget us.

We are always invited to choose the better part –– to remember that Jesus is the reason for what we do. It is easy to be distracted. But, Jesus is patient. He will always bless our efforts, and gently call us to do more.

–Fr. Stephen W. Bierschenk

St. Monica School News Cherish a Piece of St. Monica Church for a Lifetime! Heirloom quality crosses made from the marble that was part of the original Altar, Communion Railing and Narthex in our old church are available for purchase for $100 each. The marble came from Carrara, Italy, northwest of Florence, in the 1950s and was specifically fashioned for St. Monica Church. Originally blessed at its installation and again blessed by Father Bierschenk, this makes the perfect Confirmation, First Communion or Graduation memento or Parish keepsake. With very special care, these crosses were cut from marble slabs from the church, mounted on a black offset backing complete with a picture hanger on the backside and label of authenticity. 100% of all of the net proceeds of these crosses will go directly to St. Monica School. For details call Terry Lynn at (214)244-1615 or email him [email protected].

Congratulations, Jordan! Congratulations to our parishioner J o r d a n S p i e t h . H e h a s accomplished something that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson never did. IGLESIA CATOLICA ST.

Simplemente no parece justo.
