CIF Celebrates National

Correctional Employee Week

2

The Correctional Industrial Facility’s (CIF) Employee

Appreciation Committee (EAC) provided a week of fun

and food for the staff in celebration of Correctional

Employee Appreciation Week. The week started on

Saturday with the annual Pendleton Correctional

Complex Motorcycle Ride with over 40 riders and

passengers. Tuesday and Thursday mornings at

3:00am breakfast burritos were prepared by

administration and delivered to staff on the PM shifts.

Other activities for the week included a tour of the

facility for adult family members of staff, a 3-point

basketball contest, cornhole contests, bingo, a

cookout and over 25 other staff nominated awards

with gift certificates going to the winners. “Human

Foosball” was a huge hit for the fourth year running

and is now a CIF tradition

.

Superintendent Wendy Knight expressed her

enthusiasm stating “I look forward to Employee

Appreciation week every year!  It is a great way for all

staff to let their hair down and just have fun!”  This is a

very difficult business and staff that can work in this

environment deserve a huge thank you.  Hopefully,

this week allowed staff to know how much we

appreciate them.”

Six professional writers along with two staff had the privilege

of bringing their writing workshop to 16 offenders within the

Pendleton Correctional Facility, through the support of Jeff

King, Community Involvement Director at Pendleton.  Writer

mentors worked with the participants in small groups to

develop and enhance their writing.  Each offender had a

chance to share not only true stories from their past, but also

delve into creative writing exercises as they were able to

create fictional characters, situations, and stories.  For one

participant, this was significant as it was the first time he’s

ever written creatively.  He was energized by the end of

Saturday by the freedom of “just making stuff up.”

This Week's Events

Recently, Warden Charles Bowen gave a keynote

speech to the Stillwater Retreat graduating class of

2018. In attendance were the graduates, their families,

Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) and Still

Water staff.

Seven year ago Chain O’ Lakes was approached by the

owner of Stillwater Faith-based Retreat, Jim

Stoppenhagen, who wanted to provide off campus

faith-based training for the residents at Chain O’ Lakes.

After receiving the greenlight and required IDOC

training, Mr. Stoppenhagen and his staff interviewed

residents interested in the program; fourteen residents

were selected for the inaugural class.

The individuals selected receive instruction in

Authentic Manhood, series 33. Topics include a man

and his traps, his marriage, his family and his work. The

group starts each day with small group bible study

then moves on to fellowship and what it means to be a

godly man. The last part of the day involves work and

work ethic. This year’s graduation was unique in that

the family of those who graduated were invited to

attend the graduation and enjoy a sit own lunch

provided by Stillwater Ministries.
