9TH COMMANDMENT“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor”

MOSES ON THE MOUNTMoses had a great relationship with God. He personally spoke with God and always intervened for the troubles the children of Israel will give God when they were in the wilderness.

During this particular time, God called Moses onto the top of Mount Sinai. The Lord came upon that mountain as well, but when he appeared there was great smoke as the smoke of a furnace!

Page 3: 9th Commandment

While on the top of the mountain, The Lord gave Moses instructions to live by concerning idols and an alter, and he also gave Moses the ten commandments.

These commandments are considered the laws the of God. They tell us what we should do and what we should not do.

9TH COMMANDMENT

One of the commandments the Lord gave Moses to give to us is: “Thou shall not bare false witness against thy neighbor.” This was the 9th and almost final commandment.

This commandment could be found in Exodus 20: 16.

What does Thou shall not bare false witness

against they neighbor mean to you?

Let’s break it down!

First, a witness is someone who has observed

something. They saw it or even heard it with their

Second, a neighbor could be anyone. It could be the person (s) that live

directly next door to you, it could be a classmate, a friend, a family member, a

teacher, or even a stranger. A neighbor is anyone you come in contact with.

✤ The word false means not real. So, a false witness would be someone who claims to have seen or heard something but has not really done so.

✤ The bible says a false witness is like a maul, a sword, and a sharp arrow (Proverbs 25:18).

✤ In other words, it is very injurious.

HARMFUL EFFECTS An untruth about a person can be so harmful that it can ruin a person’s name and reputation.

You can cause so much trouble for someone by simply being a false witness or by falsely accusing them of something.

Even giving someone a false impression about something or about a person that you know is not true is a way of bearing false witness and will also be harmful.

WORKS OF THE DEVIL When you tell an untruth, you are doing so to deceive a person.

The Lord tells us that these types of actions are the works of the devil!

John 8:44 “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

WORKS OF THE DEVIL So the act of being dishonest or telling an untruth about someone is the act of breaking the 9th commandment. You will need to repent or ask for forgiveness of this action because it is a sin! You have disobeyed the 9th commandment.

This particular sin can cause so much damage for someone and would need to be repaired if possible. But, remember once an untruth (big or small) has been spoken about someone, it is very difficult to fix that. The damage is already done.
