Background on the Team Marbles Challenge

Originally the Team Marbles Challenge came from an event held in 2010 at the local community of Northcott and Surry Hills in Sydney to raise awareness and break down stigma around mental illness with a fun community event and information sharing.

The Inner City Working Group 4 Mental Health Recovery hosted a World Record attempt for the largest numbers of people playing with yo-yo’s at the same time. The event was titled “Yo Yo Au Go Go” – see pages 18 https://cosnp.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/narrativebooka-11-57-28.pdf

This community event aimed to highlight the “ups and downs” of life that we all experience and raise awareness about the importance of good mental health. The day was a great success, and while no records were broken, 300 people attended and had lots of fun learning (or re-learning yo yo skills).

In keeping with the theme in 2012 another event was held called “don’t lose your marbles”, marble activities, including a guessing competition and marble run were held. A range of local agencies were represented and brought information along plus volunteers made marble cakes for the afternoon tea. The day was supported by members of The Inner City SUPER Group (Service Users, Participating, Educating and Researching).

In 2013 SUPER Group members decided to create the Team Marbles Challenge to raise awareness about The Inner City Recovery Cave, a space on the 3rd floor of the O'Brien Centre at St Vincent’s Hospital, Inner City Health Program.

Participants in The Recovery Cave have coined the term, we are the SUPER Group; the aim of the group is for people to go there and find out about and share ideas that promote St Vincent’s Hospital becoming a recovery-focused service. SUPER Group members encourage participants to identify their dreams, find out what they want, then encourage people to use their Consumer Wellness Plans to identify their strengths and strategies to stay well and follow their dreams.

The SUPER Group meets on a Wednesday afternoon between 1 and 4 pm, except on public holidays.

In 2014 The Inner City Teams Marble Challenge was played between four teams of players, with each team having to complete a series of tasks. Leanne Webber the Blue Team captain with the support of her workplace Life Without Barriers lead a team from Newcastle to participate in the event. Daryl Holmes the Orange team captain was runner up after winning the inaugural event.

The Team Marbles Challenge with the support of the 5 organisations (Inner City Health Program SUPER Group, Inner City Working Group for Mental Health Recovery, Life Without Barriers, Eastern Sydney Partners in Recovery and South Sydney Community Aid Multicultural Neighborhood Centre) will become an annual event with options to develop a source of funding that would support the SUPER Group to achieve its goal of having some independent funds to turn the Recovery Cave into a more inviting place for people to learn about their own Recovery while at St Vincents.
