Pastor’s PorchPope Benedict XVI called the temptation of Jesus in the desert “a descent into the perils besetting mankind.” This happened so that we may be counted among those “who receive the abundance of grace, coming to reign in life through the one Jesus Christ.” The “one righteous act” that Saint Paul speaks about in the Letter to the Romans is Jesus’ unfailing fidelity to the Father’s will. As the serpent comes close, we will not be duped by the suggestion that somehow God will be jealous at the prospect that we “will be like gods.” For it is God himself who planted that hope in our hearts. It is the Lord’s greatest joy and glory that we share his image and likeness … not through self-seeking, but through the obedience by which “many will be made righteous”–that is, will become like God.The previous paragraph is the introduction to the first Sunday of Lent in the Magnificat prayer book for the month of March. We have entered into a holy and sacred Season, a time of year that we as a people embrace prayer, fasting, and abstinence. This is a Season that we as a people strive to become who God has created us to be. It is in this Season that we encounter who we are and who we can become with the grace of God. This encounter with our current self can help us see the need for prayer, fasting, and abstinence in the Lenten Season, so that with God’s help and grace we will become the future self that God has created us to be.

The Season of Lent is a time of preparing for the celebration of the most holy and sacred time of year, the Paschal Triduum. Through this preparation, we as individuals and as a community are strengthened spiritually. The discipline of Lent that we enter into every year can and should affect us not just for the celebration of the Paschal Triduum, but for the rest of our lives. It is normal for us as individuals to commit to giving things up for Lent and making more of an effort to pray, including attending daily Mass. The effect of these efforts is not just felt in the Easter Season, but it can help change a person permanently. In today’s Gospel reading taken from the Gospel of Matthew, we hear of Jesus going into the desert for 40 days and 40 nights for prayer, fasting, and abstinence and then he was tempted by the devil. From Jesus’ time in the desert he shows us how to be strengthened spiritually so that we can be ready with God’s grace to confront the challenges and trails we face. Jesus’ time in the desert was not just meant as an example of how we should spend our time in the Season of Lent. Rather, it was meant to inform us that we must always make an effort to change and to be ready for the challenges and trials we face on a daily basis.Father John

Parish Activities

This Vatican-approved international exhibit was designed and created by Venerable Carlo Acutis (1991-2006). The display features detailed panels highlighting some of the most powerful Eucharistic miracles of the world. In conjunction with this exhibition, there will be a mini-retreat on Saturday, March 7 from 5:30–7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s. The retreat will include a time of Eucharistic adoration with praise music by the youth band. CCC WEEKENDOur next Christian Concern Committee (CCC) collection is the weekend of February 29/March 1—the first of the new year. You continue to be very generous and your funds are being put to good use. Again it’s often to avoid people’s utilities being cut off, but there are other troubles we can help with— medical bills, helping people get off drug use, grandparents raising grandchildren. So much to do, but with your help we keep making a small difference in people’s lives. Some of you are retired and have to take mandatory distributions from your IRAs. Did you know that if part or all are designated to charities there is no tax taken out? This makes your contributions go much further. Why not think about doing this to make an even bigger difference.

HEARING ASSISTANCE NOW AVAILABLE IN THE PARISH HALLAn inductive loop assistive listening system has been installed in the Parish Hall. It is the same system that is available in the Main Church and St. Joseph’s. Compatible with all telecoil-equipped hearing aids and cochlear implants, the induction loop system will make presentations and videos in the Parish Hall more accessible for those who have hearing difficulties.

Volunteer client advocates work one-on-one with women and families to meet their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and facilitate parent mentoring lessons.

HOPE is offers volunteer training for anyone interested in becoming involved. This training equips you with the material and knowledge to start making a difference in the lives of the young women and men who participate in the programs at HOPE. Please call 662 2300 or email [email protected] for more information, to register your interest, or fill out a volunteer application. Visit us at 1183 Diamond Drive, Suite E during our open hours, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

RESPECT LIFEHuman life is a gift from God at all stages from conception to natural death. Respect Life Ministry upholds the sanctity of life and encourages education, action, and prayer to protect vulnerable lives.

“Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.” CCC 2258

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Gen. 1:27

If you would like to find out more about upcoming Respect Life events, please contact Joanne Lestone, 661-6056 or [email protected]
