Adieu, MJ The Nicola Valley will be losing one of its most community- spirited members as of mid-November, as MJ Berezan relocates to another commu- nity to begin a new chapter in her life. I first met MJ about 8 years ago while serving on the Merritt Social Planning Committee. I was immediately drawn to her warmth, passion to make things bet- ter, the sparkle in her eye (which I later found out was her secret way of recruit- ing people to work on committees), and the high level of genuine care for people in her life and community. I was im- pressed by her depth of knowledge and understanding as to the needs of the community, and her presentation to the committee represented what must have been many many hours of work. I devel- oped an instant respect for her. We met again at Rotary, and she & I became very good friends, often serving on the same committees, working long hours and participating in out-of-town events. MJ is the first person to support a person, a cause, an animal. She is the first person to put up her hand to help out, and usually the last one at an event to in- sure everything is taken care of. This remarkable woman has not lived without pain and heartbreak in her life, but her tenacity, ability to overcome and look for positives is what keeps the bounce in her step, the light in her eyes and the caring in her heart. In the last 12 years, MJ has served as SD#58 Elementary Counsellor, family therapist with Nicola Family Therapy, on the Merritt Child & Youth Committee, on the Asset Development Committee, the Nicola Valley Suicide Prevention & Awareness Committee, the Merritt Social Planning Council, the Rotary Club of Merritt Sunrise, the NV Women in Action Board, the SmartStep Board, as local co- ordinator for the Terry Fox Run, a Foster Parent and was nominated Women in Action’s Woman of the Year in 2010. MJ’s passion, determination, tireless efforts and desire to make Merritt a com- munity inclusive and healthy for all, has endeared her to all who have known her. There have been many tears since she announced her plans and there will be many more in the next week. Hearts she has touched will feel the loss as she moves on to her new home community. We wish you all the best in your new chapter, MJ. We celebrate with you and thank you for all you have done here in our community. That’s, ac- tually, the first time such a veto has happened in such a resounding way. The meeting flowed smoothly after apologies were made & accepted about the name-calling on social media. Council heard from 5 concerned citizens, but the room- ful of supporters leant its own emphasis of the importance of the issue. The zoning bylaw — which contains the ‘pay in lieu of parking’ clause — was adopted in 2015. The price was initially set at $4700 per parking space, and Council at the time reduced it to $3500. But it was based on unrealistic growth projections of a population of 15,000 by 2025. At the City staff level, building permits & business licenses were being held up, and linked to the parking levy — ‘held hostage’ was how Councillor Goetz put it. And the actual front-line ‘development officers’ who are the local real estate agents, saw many prospective buyers decide against it once they were aware of the additional charges. The motion will have to be made at the next regular council meeting, then some legalities, but no doubt the outstanding licenses will now begin to get processed. And, with a worrisome, emotional & frustrating period over, businesses owners can get back to the hard enough task of taking care of their own business.
