Happy New Year and welcome to our 92nd year as a club! I am humbled and excited to serve as your President for 2016. First and foremost, I would like to thank and appreciate the efforts and accomplishments of the outgoing Board members – Rich Severa, Timur Tecimer and David Myers, which resulted in 2015 being a great year for PVGC. The leadership of our outgoing President, Rich Severa, resulted in a cohesive board with a management style that was professional - culmi-nating in superior financial performance and a legacy of goodwill with our landlord, the city of PVE. Timur steered the Membership Committee for the second year and exceeded the annual recruiting goal, which has the significance of funding our club’s capital expenditures. David as VP and former Treasurer was a “jack of all trades” this past year and especially helpful to me as a sounding board on finance matters. I want to acknowledge the contribution of all members that served on various committees last year. We are very fortunate to have an active and volunteering membership who are willing to give their time for the benefit of all. We also have an experienced and competent management and staff that executed the high quality of service that was provided and expected at our club. However, we need your continued support and feedback, which is welcome in person, by phone or email. Our vision for PVGC is simple: to be a Premier Golf Club – period! Our challenge will be to deliver a first rate golf course with an excellent club experience and do it consistently with a positive bottom line. I truly believe we can achieve that with our proficient board, management, and staff. We have an action packed year planned for 2016. Our most significant capital item is completing the Phased Course Improvement Plan, which as you know, involves repositioning holes 15 and 16 and thereby improving safety and compatibility of the course. We have selected the contractor to perform the work and are ready to proceed with the project upon receipt of regulatory approvals. The other major focus will be on continuing efforts to obtain a sustainable water source for the course. We will also be conducting a member survey this year. This is an important part of provid-ing future direction for the club and I would encourage you to actively participate and have your voice heard. On the operating side, we will positively manage the club’s finances and have a goal of building a rainy day cash reserve. In closing, let me reiterate our desire to obtain comments, suggestions and concerns from you - the members, the governance group, and staff. I encourage you to seek us out – you will find us in the favorite hangouts at the club. I look forward to serving as your President and acting on behalf of all members.

    —Marzi Mistry

2016 is going to be a year of great enhancements at our Club! Aside from the improvements to holes 15 and 16, we have several operational improve-ments planned for the membership's enjoyment. A more detailed budget and expanded Member Events Calendar show five wine dinners and four special parties for the Club this year, as well as additional festivities currently being finalized. And now a quick explanation on the new "Community" table in our bar. Most clubs have a no-host or community table in their grill room. This addition will allow our members and guests to meet and enjoy the view. It will be set with place settings for lunch but not for the cocktail hour. Feel free to sit there and enjoy an adult beverage, a meal or just the newspaper. It is a comfortable addition to the bar area, as we have kept the same number of seats for the membership. Other enhancements that you will see soon include a new soundproof ceiling treatment, a bar with Craft beers in the Montemalaga Room, new seating areas in the Montemalaga Room and enhanced seating on the terrace. Please make plans to honor Club Presidents at the Annual President’s Ball on Saturday, January 30th. This will be quite an elegant event, with Chef Milan and the enhanced culinary staff promising a few surprises for us. Wine enhancements are coming with the return of Sommelier Laura Stevenson to our staff after maternity leave. She will be on hand during dinner hours to enhance your dining experience with some new additions to our Adult Beverage menu. I am really encouraged and excited about the state of the club. The budget looks great with plenty of Ws! That is: Water, Wine and Weddings on the books for 2016! I look forward to seeing you on your next visit to your club.

Happy New Year! As the New Year is ushered in, following are some reminders of what you can do to improve the golf course: Observe ropes/stakes/signage. Repair ball marks and rake bunkers. Pushing the sand toward the center instead of

pulling to the edges. If your divot has soil on it, replace it and sprinkle some divot mix over the top. If no

soil, use the divot mix. Limiting practice swings on par 3 tees. Keeping your carts on the paths as much as possible. Keeping pull carts off tees and collars at all times.

The short days and cold nights have a definite impact on the golf course. Greens are faster as they are not growing this time of year. Kikuyugrass is semi-dormant, so the fairways play faster and the rough is not as penal. But the largest impact is probably the tee on hole 15 and the driving range tee. With the high number of rounds and the limited tee size, we battle keeping healthy turf on those tees. Limiting practice swings on the tee itself will help immensely. Every little bit helps! For more information, visit my blog at www.pvgc.blogspot.com See you on the fairways… —Pat Gradoville

This picture was taken January 1st at 8am in the morning on 15 gold tee cart path. Yes, that is ice, and it's about 3/4"

thick. That will give you an idea how cold it gets in that part of the course.

An Opportunity to Watch and Learn From the Best Athletes in Women’s College Golf

USC, Duke, and UCLA are the top three Women’s Collegiate Golf teams in the nation.

Karen Chung, USC, Leona Maguire, Duke, and Bronte Law, UCLA, are the top three ranked women college stars.

They will all be here competing in the 21st Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge February 7 through 9, 2016, against a 16 team field which includes nine of the top 15 teams in the nation.

The Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge is annually the most sought after invitation in Ladies Collegiate Golf because of the quality of the field and the challenge of the beautiful PVGC course. The coaches and players also praise the strong support of the PVGC members as Volunteers and Host Families.

USC had a strong fall season with wins at the Annika Intercollegiate and the East Lake Cup. Duke also had two victories in the fall with wins at the Landfall Tradition and Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. UCLA won the PAC-12 Preview event in Kohala, Hawaii, in November.

Also ranked in the top 15 are Arizona #9, Oklahoma State #10, Alabama #11, Florida #12, Arizona State #13, and Washing-ton #14. The very competitive field is completed by 2015 defending champion, Baylor, UNLV, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Wake Forest and Pepperdine.

Leona Maguire from County Cavan, Ireland, is the World Number 1-Ranked Amateur per Golf Week Magazine. In her last seven events, Leona has finished 1st, 3rd, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st and 2nd. Her twin sister, Lisa, who is 15 minutes older also plays for Duke. Their parents are schoolteachers in Ireland. Karen Chung, USC, was the PAC-12 Player of the Month for September after her victory in the Annika Intercollegiate. Bronte Law is our defending champion from 2015 and will be remembered fondly for her very gracious acceptance speech and appreciative thanks to the Palos Verdes Golf Club members, Host fami-lies and volunteers for their support of this event. Ms Law was voted PAC-12 Player of the Month for October after her victory at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

Other individuals to watch will include Emma Talley, Alabama, who won the 2015 NCAA Individual Championship, Charlotte Thomas, Washington, who won the PAC-12 Preview at an impressive 7 under par, and Gabriella Then, USC Junior, who won all four of her matches at the East Lake Cup including a final round victory over World No. 1, Leona Maguire, and was voted PAC-12 Player of the Month for November.

PVGC Members have the opportunity to be part of this event by participating in the College-Am on Saturday February 6 or as volunteers to help run the event. Sign up sheets are available in the Pro Shop or contact Tournament Chair, Ron DeFrees, [email protected] or Volunteer Committee Chair, Lorna Interian, [email protected].

The cold spell that hit Palos Verdes curbed some of the hot action on the golf course last Month, but we did have a few great shots and fine rounds to report in December. We had a few great shots to report last month. Bob Alberts made a sweet birdie on the 4th hole. Rob Moore made birdie on #15 and #16 and made par on #17, at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Christmas came early for Kim Brothers, as she holed out her 2nd shot for eagle on #17, in the PVGC Women’s Holiday Tourna-ment. We also had a few great rounds to report. Suren-dra Jain shot and incredible 82, with three birdies at the very difficult Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course. Lee Reitler used his new putter very efficient-ly, carding a 74 with five birdies! Doug Potts not only shot a net 63, he also broke his age, with a smooth 83! Keep Shooting for the Stick,

With El Nino ramping up in Southern California we will be encountering conditions on the golf course that we have not seen in years. One of these conditions is “Casual Water” on the golf course. The definition of Casual Water is as follows, “Casual water" is a tempo-rary accumulation of water on the golf course. In other words, a lake is not casual water, but a puddle of rainwater (that will disappear once the sun comes out) is. Casual water must be identifiable before or after a player has taken his stance. Ground that is merely wet, spongy, mushy or muddy is not casual water. There must be an accumulation of water above ground that is visible. (If a player takes his stance where water is not visible, but doing so causes water to push up onto the surface where it is now visible, that does qualify as casual water.) Dew and frost are not casual water; snow and natural ice can be casual water or loose impediments, at the player's discretion; manufactured ice is an obstruction. Relief may be taken from Casual Water as an Abnormal Ground Condi-tion.

With the end of 2015, PVWGC golf events for the year were better than par with a grand finale on December 10th when 100 members played in the Jingle & Mingle holiday golf event. Greeted by an amazing outside breakfast buffet, chairs Noel Gallagher, Kathie Gaston and Pam Park planned a festive day. Christmas themed lantern prizes decorated the dining room with our holiday tradition of Robert Rosenberg beautifully playing the piano which was appreciated by everyone and ending with Christmas Carols sung around the piano which were arranged by Pam Foreman. Our installation luncheon which took place on January 7th, gave members an opportunity to thank the PVWGC Board Members and the 2015 volunteers who worked together with our very helpful club staff to make PVWGC the very best. This also was a special occasion to welcome new board members, Lauren Nakano, Assistant Tournament Chair and Cheryl Robershaw, Membership Chair. PVWGC looks forward to greeting PVGC incoming President, Marzi Mistry in 2016. Remember the President's Ball is January 30th. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
