e year 2010 has been a difficult one with thetal size of the LPG market in Pakistanntracting. It is the continuation of a trendread over the past four years that saw the

arket contract by 23%. Pakistans per capitansumption of about 2.6 Kg., is low even by

sian standards. Continuous expansion of theNG markets driven by low prices hasnnibalized the LPG auto market. Developmentthe domestic house-hold market for cookingabsorb LPG, thus made surplus requires

vestment into cylinders. The fragmented andrge number of LPG marketing companieserating at low margins is unwilling or unable

    do so.

r our part we have focussed our energies inveloping the bulk market by concentrating one industrial and commercial segments. Thisa capital intensive undertaking requiring a

gh degree of technical expertise and strictherence to international safety standards. Theortages of natural gas in the country, has

creased the perceived demand for LPG. Buts is a red herring for us as the short perioda winter load does not justify the investmentr a bulk customer installation. Nor can extra

PG be imported and trunked north to theficient markets for a short winter requiremente to infrastructure constraints.

ur commitment to the cylinder market remains

eadfast. We try to ensure uninterruptedpplies through costly imports during periodsshortage. We imported LPG and suffered

sses when floods hit the country and our mainpplier PARCO was forced to shutdown. Ourstributors who suffered losses during theods were also compensated.

e Customer Care team has gradually taken more responsibilities to streamline thesiness. Efficient and courteous customer

terface improves performance. On-boardvoicing system on tankers for delivery to bulkstomers improves efficiency and controls.

e will continue to provide customers qualityrvice and product. Investments will be madeensure high standards are consistently

    hieved.

    SHV Energy Pakistan Winter 2010

We, at SHV Energy Pakistan believe that it is imperative to create awareness

amongst people, both within our own organization and the general public,

about switching to a much cleaner fuel (LPG) that produces significantly lower

emissions and hence addresses environmental problems.

SHV Gas, the worldwide LPG specialist, has started Why LPG? campaign,

with an aim to create global awareness for LPG as an energy source that

is environmentally sensitive, secure, affordable and available on the spot.As part of these activities, SHV has also launched a website:

www.whylpg.com. The purpose of this website is to inform the public

about the benefits of using LPG. The objective of this activity is to develop

and implement customer awareness programs that promote the use of LPG

    amongst target customer groups.

One of our main goals is to learn and raise awareness about LPG. Together

we can make a change, so spread the message: LPG is a part of the solution to

todays energy challenges. Lets lead the way together!

Pakistan was hit by heavy floods this summer which wereunprecedented in scale and the worst in over 80 years. It ravagedthe agriculture based economy with entire villages washed awayand over 20 million people (or more than the entire populationof the Netherlands) displaced and affected. About 2,000 werereported to have died and countless injured with outbreaks of

water born diseases. The floods inundated crop growing areaswhich is about one-fifth the land mass of Pakistan (or more thanthe size of England) and dealt a crippling blow to the agriculturebased economy. Livestock losses, also a source of livelihood formany, were estimated at 200,000.

We at SHV responded by focusing our help immediately to affectedemployees and distributors. Thirteen employees - mainly low-paid workers and contract staff, were provided relief in cash totake care of their immediate needs. Some more help to repairtheir houses is ongoing.

For helping distributors we prioritized the smaller ones who didnot have the resources to recover from the crisis. They wereprovided relief in cash after which we worked with them to helprestart their businesses. As soon as the flood waters receded, some were lent bottles and others provided credit to get them to

    start working their businesses again.

Relief activities to help the poor and displaced persons werefinanced through employee contributions and funds contributedby colleagues and friends at SHV Holding offices and remitted tous. Every employee in SHV Pakistan contributed a minimum ofone day salary towards this fund. Volunteer staff membersundertook upon themselves to purchase, pack and distribute therelief goods consisting mainly of packs of staples like flour, cookingoil, pulses, milk, sugar, biscuits etc. These were then trucked toaffected area mainly in south Punjab and distributed in the districtsof Jampur and Muzaffargarh where 800 families were providedrelief goods.

SHV Holdings made a generous contribution of Euro 100,000/ forrehabilitation of the refugees. Most of the affected had returned

to their homes soon after the flood waters subsided and therewere not many refugee camps left to support. The damage toinfrastructure is estimated at US $ 10 Billion which includes 5,000schools destroyed. As our focus in SHV is to support education

it was agreed that themoney will be used tobuild a school. We arenow in the process ofp a r t n e r i n g t h econstruction of a schoolfor under-privi legedchildren. This process willtake a little longer tocomplete but we hope thatthe school will open for itsfirst term in beginning2012.

Change is inevitable, but some things never change, likeshining of the sun, providing warmth and vital energyto our planet round the clock. It has been doing so formillions of years and will continue to keep the life-formalive on Earth for as long as the solar system continuesto exist in its current configuration. In this process, thesun also provides us with inexhaustible energy. Sunlightfalls on Earth at the rate of 1,366 Watts per square meterwhich means 130,000 Tera Watts (TW) of solar energy

reaches the Earth each year. Humans consume coal, nuclear and natural gas at the rate of around 15 TW ayear, only a fraction of the solar energy potential ofearth. It is the need of the hour to make use of someinexhaustible energy resources to meet our energyneeds. Renewable energy is now enjoying unprecedentedattention and development due to global climatic changeconcern and the issue of energy security. Volatility ofoil prices and insecurity of supplies has led to a globalshift in energy strategy. Use of renewable energy ensuressecurity of supplies, eliminates or reduces the need forenergy imports, keeps the energy prices predictable &lower over the long term, and protects the ailing

    environment by reducing GHG emissions.

Being a clean andinnovative Energyprovider , SHVEnergy Pakistanhas once againtaken the lead andis now addingR e n e w a b l eEnergy to its portfolio

of energy solutions. Pilot projects forsolar-thermal water heating, LPG hybrids and solar PVsare being launched. Their successful completion willlead to a full-scale Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiencyprogram. Pakistan faces a grave energy crisis today.Renewable Energy can contribute a great deal to avertthis crisis. However given the immense potential thecountry enjoys for utilization of various RenewableEnergy resources, their share in the overall energy mixhas so far been negligible. SHV Energy intends to changethe current scenario, and in doing so, will proudly playits part in reducing the dependence of the country onpolluting and fast depleting fossil fuels.
