V. A. T. (VALUE ADDED TAX)

(Standard Rate for V.A.T. is at present 8%)

The following brief notes on V.A.T. are given for the guidance of Buyers and Vendors. Glendining & Co. do not accept responsibility for any inaccuracies, the completeness or subsequent alteration of the information offered. Buyers and Vendors must satisfy themselves as to their own responsibilities to H.M. Customs and Excise for V.A.T.

1. In some circumstances V.A.T. is payable by the Buyer on items under 100 years old (except Legal Tender) when such items have been entered for sale by a Registered Person or Unregistered Foreign Resident.

2. It is proposed that GLENDINING & CO. will sell Coins and Medals on a V.A.T. INCLUSIVE BASIS. Therefore, at no time will any Buyer be asked to pay any sum over and above the ‘Knock-Down’ Price.

3. By selling on a V.A.T. INCLUSIVE BASIS, this will obviate the necessity of designating in the Sale Catalogue those items under 100 years old which have been entered for sale by a Registered Person or by an Unregistered Foreign Resident.

4. The method of accounting for V.A.T. when selling on a V.A.T. INCLUSIVE BASIS will therefore be as the following example (based on a 10% Rate) on all those items which are under 100 years old (except Legal Tender) and which have been entered for sale by a Registered Person or Unregistered Foreign Resident:—

‘Knock-Down’ Price... 5 e £110

V.A.T. recovered from Buyer (1/11th of ‘Knock-Down Price) ... £10

Vendor’s Gross Selling Price ... bon ge OO)

5. The V.A.T. recovered from the Buyer as shown in para. 4 will be paid to the Vendor ONLY WHEN HE IS A REGISTERED PERSON (see para. 13 below for example).

6. For V.A.T. purposes all Customers (both Buyers and Vendors) will be classi- fied under one of the following three headings:

(a) UNREGISTERED PERSONS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.

(b) UNREGISTERED FOREIGN RESIDENTS.

(c) REGISTERED PERSONS.

7. The class of Coins and Medals being offered must be considered under three headings:

(i) Items over 100 years old:

(ii) Items under 100 years old (excluding Legal Tender).

(iii) Legal Tender (both U.K. and foreign currency).

(ii) Whether or not (i) Items under a subject to V.A.T.:— Items over | 100 years old (iii)

100 years old | (except Legal | Legal Tender Tender)

BY THE BUYER on the Selling Price:—

(a) UNREGISTERED PERSON IN THE ik: No Yes No

(6) UNREGISTERED FOREIGN

RESIDENT No Yes but No

(c) REGISTERED eg) PERSON No Yes but No

see para. 10 (a)

BY THE VENDOR on the Auctioneer’s Com- mission and other charges:—

(a) UNREGISTERED PERSON IN THE LE. Yes Yes Yes

(b) UNREGISTERED FOREIGN RESI- DENT (see para. 12) No No No

(c) REGISTERED PERSON (see para. 13 (a) ) Yes Yes Yes

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR BUYERS

8. UNREGISTERED PERSONS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.

(a) The ‘Knock-Down’ Price is the amount to be paid by the Buyer.

(b) The Limits of Commissions given to the Auctioneer will be regarded as inclusive of any V.A.T. payable.

(c) Buyers will not be given separate Invoices showing where V.A.T. has been paid.

(d) The cost of packing and postage of purchases will be subject to V.A.T. at the Standard Rate.

9. UNREGISTERED FOREIGN RESIDENTS.

SALE CATALOGUES On the average we issue twelve or more Coin Catalogues and three Naval & Military Medal Catalogues each year, some of which are usually of Sales of important Collections.

CATALOGUE SUBSCRIPTIONS

Sale Catalogues, frequently illustrated, are normally posted to Subscribers about three weeks prior to the date of Sale.

Lists of “Prices Realised” are issued after each Sale, thus giving at a glance a reliable guide to value. The final test of value must always be auction prices rather than the figures given in books of reference, for changing times and fashions soon render the latter obsolete and misleading. The Lists of “Prices Realised” will probably be enclosed in a following Sale Catalogue.

Subscription Rates

(commencing from 1st January)

Coin Catalogues and subsequent list | of Prices Realised £3.00 per annum

Naval & Military Medal Catalogues and subsequent list of Prices Realised ; £0.75 per annum

(Reductions for new subscribers commencing after Ist April.)

All subscriptions expire on 3lst December, and renewal reminders are issued. Catalogues of past Sales cannot be supplied.

AIR MAIL

To allow subscribers resident outside Europe time to submit postal bids, Pre-Sale Catalogues will, if desired, be sent by Air Mail. Air Mail postage is not, however, included in the Subscription Rate and the cost must be borne by the Sub- scriber. In such cases an additional £2.00 should be sent as a deposit and we will advise when this is exhausted.
