From the Editor’s Desk
Dear All,
On behalf of the editorial board, I would like to express my profound
gratitude for your appreciation of the first issue. I am also grateful for
your comments and suggestions for improvement. As a consequence
of the feedback received, we have incorporated many changes in the
design and content layout of this issue. We look forward to your
continual help and support to further improve Bits & Bytes.
Nothing in life gets better by chance, it gets better by change.
Change is the essence of life, however, it is often difficult to manage
and sometimes painful too. The secret of successful change
management is to focus all the energy to build the new, not to fight
the old. Destination cannot be changed overnight, but direction can
be! After all, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Bits & Bytes and other BACSAP initiatives are small steps towards
the direction of a big change. Let, instead of focusing on what the
world holds for us, concentrate on what we can bring to it. Together,
let us be the change we wish to see in the world.
Finally, a bit of advice, please rise above your circumstances and shine.
The future is bright….. YOU are the Future!
All the Best,
Saima Jawad

A SUCCESSFUL PHD EXPERIENCE
The Computer Science Department is home to multidisciplinary research and academic units that address
issues and recent advances in Computer Science. The department provides cutting edge facilities to promote
research. Recently the department awarded its first Doctorate of Philosophy in Computer Science degree.
Bits & Bytes interviewed our first PhD graduate Dr. Fazle Hadi to know about him a bit and to discover his
views about our postgraduate program. This is what he has to say…..!!!
My name is Fazle Hadi. My place of birth is Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. My
father served in Pakistan Air Force. As a devoted father, he strived to provide his
children with quality education. It is due to his prayers and support that I now
have the honor to be the first PhD degree holder in my family.
I completed my higher secondary and intermediate education from Peshawar. I did
M.Sc. in Computer Science from University of Peshawar. Later I completed MS in
Computer Science from International Islamic University, Islamabad. Finally I re-
ceived my PhD degree from Bahria University Islamabad, Pakistan. My experience
here at Department of Computer Science, Bahria University Islamabad, had been
the most memorable. I was fortunate to carry out my research titled “Modeling
and Analyzing Anycast Routing in Reactive and
Proactive Networks” under able supervision of Dr. Abid
Ali Minhas, who guided me every step of the way. The
head of department, Mr. Fazal Wahab was supportive in all
matters. All other staff members were extremely friendly
and cooperative. During my time here as a PhD scholar, I
also delivered lectures as a visiting faculty and super-
vised research thesis of graduate students. In short, I found
Bahria University with an excellent environment for
undergraduate and post graduate studies and research.
Currently, I am working as an Associate Professor of Computer Science, Higher Education Department, Govt.
of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Research has
always been my prime focus and up till now I have
had 8 journal and more than 20 conference publica-
tions. I received two travel grants from HEC for
China and UK. My core expertise is in the field of
Computer Networks, ad hoc Networks, Delay
Tolerant Networks, Wireless Mesh Networks and

ORGANS-ON-CHIPS
Microchips lined by human cells that could revolutionize drug testing
The Wyss Institute (Harvard University) researchers and a multi-
disciplinary team of collaborators are engineering microchips
that recapitulate the microarchitecture and functions of living
organs, such as the lung, heart and intestines. These micro-
chips, called organs-on-chips, are likely to form an accurate
alternative to traditional animal testing one day. Each individual
organ-on-chip is composed of a clear flexible polymer about
the size of a computer memory stick that contains hollow
microfluidic channels lined by living human cells. As the micro
devices will be translucent, they will allow one to observe the
inner workings of human organs. The Wyss Institute team
seeks to build ten different human organs-on-chips and link
them together on an automated instrument to impersonate
whole body physiology. The instrument will control fluid flow
and cell viability while permitting real-time observation of the
cultured tissues and analysis of complex biochemical functions.
This instrumented "human-on-a-chip" will be used to rapidly
assess responses to new drug candidates, providing critical
information on their safety and efficacy.

Microsoft is developing a new web browser named “Spartan”. It will serve as the default browser on
both the PC and mobile device running Windows 10. Spartan is designed for interoperability with the
modern web, and it is powered by a new rendering engine (Edge). It is not sure for now that it will
replace Internet Explorer or not, but there are news that Internet Explorer will be a part of Windows
10, so that it can be used in scenarios where IE-specific functionality is required, and it will use the
same dual-engine configuration as "Spartan". Spartan is providing many different interactive modes and
new functionalities. Note-taking mode is one of the coolest modes of Spartan. In this mode, you can
draw directly on the webpage, which captures the images, and lets you collaborate with others by
adding comments and tags. All these webpage-based collaborations will be automatically synced to
OneDrive. Another interactive mode of Spartan is reading mode. In this mode, you can arrange web
views the way you want in order to make them easier to read. You can also curate a "Reading List"
that will sync across phones and tablets. Cortana will also be a part of Spartan which will allow users
to find and do things online faster. Just like Windows 10, Spartan will also get updated automatically, it
will be secure, and it is designed in such a way that it will ensure web developers a consistent platform
across all Windows 10 devices. Spartan web browser seems to be a nice step forward to enhance
browsing experience. However, there aren’t many details provided yet that whether the browser will
support chrome extensions, or whether it will be the next Internet Explorer, or whether its browser
will finally be rebranded. So, in order to find answers of all these questions, we have to wait until the
release of Windows 10.

If you are a Bahrian, chances are, you will meet the most freakishly strange people before you leave. Even
though tons of students are studying in Bahria, there are 7 people that you will come across (and will prob-
ably become really good friends with) within your first year.
The Future Mark Zuckerberg
There is always a know-it-all, extra-smart kid that everyone envies, but this is the person
you’ll be telling people you knew back in college once he/she gets famous. This person
asks the most baffling questions in class and leaves you wondering why you chose the
University life and did not just start working at McDonald’s instead.
The Extrovert
This really friendly person talks to everyone and is always found in the corridors
talking to new faces every time you see him. You do not know what his grades
are or who this person is actually friends with and you probably do not know
anything useful about him, but what you do know is that if you need to catch up
on the latest tittle-tattle, this is the guy!
The All-Rounder
Non-judgmental, does not believe in rumors, hates backbiting, has a hell lot in common with you…in
short, perfect! You can talk to this person about almost anything. And surprisingly,
out of all the people you will meet, this might be the only one on the same page as
you are. You are not best friends with them but you will get along very well if you
get to know this person. How to find this gem? I have already found one, it is real-
ly easy. It is the one you have always found really intriguing for no particular rea-
son and yet, have not had the guts to talk to.
The Yoda
Feeling blue? No problem! This oh-so-wise person will show up whenever you need
motivation or advice. He/she is always around, could be one of your closest friends,
and will make you feel better every time you are feeling low. There is nothing bet-
ter than a person giving out positive energy. So, after you have identified your Yoda,
do not forget to thank him/her once in a while.
7 WONDERS OF BAHRIA
17
The Admirer
Everyone has admirers (including creepy stalkers) but there is always one that you
value. This person actually cares enough to hide his/her feelings so you would not
freak out. This is usually the person who calls you and wakes you up at 4 AM, so you
can study or waits outside your classes for you or definitely the one who buys your
favorite candy for you when he/she is at the café. How often do you get coy good
morning/good night texts from your crazy friends? Hardly ever. Yup, take the hint!
The Clan
Like everyone in Bahria, you too, have a clan. But the clan keeps changing over time. In the first week or
two, you quickly made a group out of the first few people you met. You all had fun, hung out between
classes, went for lunch together and helped each other in eve-
rything. For about a month, it seemed like you had so much in
common. Maybe even for a semester, you thought these would
be your homies for life. And then?...Then things began to fall
apart. The friendship did not have any profundity. Once the
novelty settled, you realized you did not really have much in
common. But now, as you have started feeling comfortable,
you look around and finally choose 5-6 people from your class. They are the ones you hang out with all
the time.
The Bestie
The twin you never had. This person has the ability to read your mind and in-
terestingly, can communicate with you through telepathy. You guys, without a
doubt, like the same TV show, have a crush on the same person, eat out of
each others wallets and are constantly striving to embarrass the other in public
(the best part!). So, if you don’t have a person to complete your sentences for
you yet, start looking for him/her, because you will need one to survive this
living hell.
This is pretty much everyone I have known in the university up till now, divided into these categories,
each more ridiculous than the last, yet they make up the best crew ever.
Live long, you weirdly amazing creatures!

Pakistani startup, Patari is the next big thing for
Pakistani music industry
Patari – a Lahore based startup, touted as "Pakistan’s first music discovery and streaming service"
boasts the largest collection of Pakistani songs ever assembled in one place, all legal. The project, the
brainchild of entrepreneurs Khalid Bajwa and Humayun Haroon, is incubated by Plan9 (Pakistan’s big-
gest innovation hatchery). The music service, which is Pakistan’s answer to Spotify, currently boasts a
collection of 600 artists and 20,000 songs; the biggest ever available online, and features musicians
ranging from local Indies to Ustads. The aim of Patari is to provide users with a single platform for all
local music and enable them to discover new songs. It also aims to fill the gaps left open by websites
such as KoolMuzone and Pakmusic.net which were once dedicated to launch, promote and support
Pakistani music. With the help of Patari’s content team, music fans will be able to explore various
playlists and recommendations on the website. Pakistani musicians will also be able to promote and
monetize their songs on the website. The team of Patari is hopeful that this new project will be a
game changer for the Pakistani music industry. As an avid music listener, I am really happy that there
is finally something to quench the thirst of Pakistani music fans.
The website is currently in beta and is invite only at the moment. So, if you have not already, register
at patari.pk for an exclusive invite.
