A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT………….

Purim to Passover – One Temple’s Journey

In the last two months Temple Beth Israel has experienced two significant

holidays that impacted our whole congregation. There were other things going

on as well including family and Torah services but there are the two events I

want to highlight.

Purim is a time for the Temple to “let its hair down” and have some fun. It is not

meant to be a serious holiday and we made sure it wasn’t. It was a celebration of

sorts with something from everyone. The Purim Spiel, including dinner before

and the after-party, for adults. There are many to thank and I’m sure I won’t remember everyone but I

want to thank Rabbi Rick and Lisa for coordinating the event, the cast and crew of the Spiel itself, Kiki

Wells, Maryann Kast and their crew for the dinner and after-party, those who contributed to the bake

sale, and everyone else who worked tirelessly to make the night happen.

12 hours later, the children took center stage with their Purim production based on Inside Out. If you

were not there you missed a wonderful event. The kids were marvelous! Jeanna Francis and Amy Schmidt

deserve special recognition for all their efforts to make this production a success. It was a completely

different audience than the night before, demonstrating the diversity we have here at TBI. This was

followed by our annual Purim Carnival which went well into the afternoon. Again, I want to thank all

those who volunteered to make it a success.

Passover arrived a couple of weeks later. I was privileged to attend the Caring Committee Seder

luncheon. A brief service was led by Rabbi and was appreciated by all in attendance. For many, this was

the only Passover experience they had this year.

Friday April 22nd was the Temple Seder. Growing up, our family never attended the Temple Seder as we

felt it was a family event. The last two years I attended the Seder here at TBI. It exceeded all expectations.

Sisterhood (and the men of Sisterhood) did an absolutely marvelous job. They cannot be thanked enough

for all they did. There were over 150 in attendance. Everyone pitched in to help with the cleanup. It truly

was a special event. My wife has a saying that “friends are the family you get to choose”. I will always

think of Passover as a family event but now my “family” has expanded.

Tuesday night, May 24th is the annual congregational meeting, starting at 7pm. This is an important

meeting where we set our budget for the upcoming fiscal year, elect Officers and Board Members, and

ratify by-laws changes. Please plan to attend as we plan ahead for the future of our Temple.

Steve Negin, President TBI

MAY - JUNE 2016

On April 3, Sisterhood sold Hamantaschen and provided the Deli Lunch at Brotherhood’s Purim

Carnival. Sisterhood would like to thank Sarah and Bryan Davis who spearheaded the effort to help

make the Hamantaschen sale a success, as well as Cookie Fritz and Rita Goldstone for overseeing

the Purim Deli Lunch. We would not have been able to be successful without their leadership! Thanks

also to those who helped sell at the event.

Then on Sun., April 10, thirteen of us took the mid-morning train to Hanford to spend time together

(and eat!). We visited the Hanford Carnegie Museum and Tourist Information Center which took us all

back in time. After, we walked to have lunch at Hong Kong Chop Suey Restaurant. Before heading

home, we had to stop for ice cream at Superior Dairy, a parlor serving hearty scoops of homemade

ice cream, banana splits, sundaes & sandwiches since 1929. Yum!

In addition, on Friday, April 22, Sisterhood sponsored the first-night community Seder. A special

thanks goes out to the following people who helped prepare for the delicious Seder meal and

scrumptious dessert: Sindy Alson, Roberta & Terry Bavin, Bryan and Sarah Davis, Rachel Delavan,

Cookie Fritz, Alisa Moore and Aleta Wolfe. We also thank all who stepped up to help clean up after.

We would not have been able to do this without so many volunteers.

The women of our community really are “stronger together” in the bonds built through work and play,

study and reflection – again, thank you all!

One of the core missions of Sisterhood is to raise funds to help our children flourish with their Jewish

education and experiences. To that end, Sisterhood has a Youth Fund which can offer assistance to

students planning to travel to Israel or other destinations to engage in programs sponsored by the

Reform movement (or by organizations whose programs are consistent with the Reform movement.)

Please contact Sisterhood for a Youth Scholarship application, which should be turned in by May

15th. Limited funds are available and will be distributed according to how many applications are

received. Please note, this Scholarship fund is different than the Campership Fund, which Sisterhood

co-funds with Brotherhood and whose allocations are handled through the Temple.

Starry Starry Night Fundraiser a Success…Thanks to Our Supportive Congregation!

The Religious School’s first-ever major fund-raising event was a success! . So many people from all aspects of our temple

community came out to support the school! In addition to raising the required funds, the attendees had a wonderful

time.

Now it is time to thank the people who worked the hardest to make the evening happen. Thanks first of all to the chairs

of our subcommittees: Aleta Wolfe, publicity and ticket chair, as well as the chair of the Comprehensive Youth

Committee; Marni Cotter, entertainment and awards chair and the concept creator; Elana Landau, decorations chair;

Sharon Smith, food and beverage chair; Jaimie Richardson, set-up committee chair; and Oren Kaye, clean-up committee

chair, even after being crowned Prom “Melech” (King). Each chair had a committee of hard workers behind them.

Thanks to all of you!

We also had a list of congregants and friends who volunteered their time and talent to make our evening wonderful, and

help keep costs down: Linda Glassman of Two Friends winery, who donated all of the wine; David Press, our fabulous

DJ; Mike Snowden, our on-site photographer; Mindy Chakov, who designed and painted our backdrop; the TBI

Brotherhood, who donated all of the hard liquor and mixers; Poornima Friedman, who donated the band “Fire and

Rain”; Josh Kob for providing beer donated by New Belgium Brewing; Sarah Davis for the raffle prizes; Esti Barak and

Zachary Smith for keeping the food and dessert flowing; and Stephanie Smith and James Mugridge for bartending.

In addition to our volunteers, we had a group of financial sponsors who covered our other costs:

Douglas Weil Construction, LLC

Fresno Dental Professionals (Drs Julian, Asselin, Grabe & Moss)

Lightning International

Perkins, Mann & Everett, Inc. and Jerry H. Mann, Attorneys at Law

Robert S. Julian, DDS, MD Inc.

Drs. Dwight Sievert and Smadar Aviv-Sievert

Lenore Schreiber, Attorney at Law

And last but definitely least, thanks to everyone who came to the event and/or made donations on our behalf!

Someone’s in the Kitchen with Roberta…

Just another day at TBI Religious School…our students celebrating Tu

B’Shevat by making frosting “trees” in cooking class with Roberta Bavin!

Mah Jong Tournament Success!!

Once again, Leslie Kline and her committee hosted a classy, fun and successful Mah Jong Tournament that raised $1,800 for the Religious

School!

Thanks so much to everyone who helped organize, cook and run the tournament, donated items for the raffles, and who to all came to

play and support the School!

A Note from

Brotherhood!

TBI Brotherhood would like to

thank the Brothers, Sisters,

FYBGI and Josh Reba for their

assistance and help for the

Purim Carnival.
