Spring Ticket Special at Ratanga in lead up to closure

Ratanga Junction theme park, which is to close on May 1, 2018, is offering a special Full Adventurer ticket price of just R95 for the Spring Season.

Full Adventurer ticket prices are normally R179 per person so this rep-resents a significant discount, says Ra-tanga General Manager, Bill Taylor.

“It is a thank you to the public for their support over the years and to give as many people as possible the chance to ride at least one more time before the park closes.”

The park will be open daily from Friday, September 29, until Sunday, October 8.

Taylor said Ratanga’s very popular function facilities, Bridgeways, will also continue to operate right up to the end and inquiries for end of year func-tions and exclusive corporate days were flooding in.

PROMOTION

Jazz masters to pay tribute to local legendsWell-known jazz legends are fine tun-ing their musical instruments and polishing their voices, to deliver a “life-changing” musical experience during the three day concert series ‘Jazz Masters Tribute’, to be showcased at Artscape Theatre Centre from Thurs-day to Saturday, September 28 to 30, at 8pm.

Thursday will honour female jazz icons such as Miriam Makeba through jazz voices of Africa by the well-known female jazz icon Zoe Modiga – a regular visitor to the Mother City’s jazz events such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. She will be joined in song by Nomfundo Xaluva, whose voice and talent as a pianist is conveyed through her album ‘Kusile’. The line-up will also include one of Cape Town’s best-loved pianists and vocalists, Amanda Tiffin, as well as Monique Hellenberg, cur-rently the featured vocalist on house music duo, Goldfish’s current hit radio single ‘This Is How It Goes’.

Friday will celebrate the Ngcukana Brothers primarily through instru-mental renditions by award-winning saxophonist McCoy Mrubata who, in-cidentally, studied informally under the Ngcukanas. A regular performer with local and international greats, Mrubata is a former member of the band Sheer All Stars, which consisted of some of the best musicians within the South African jazz scene, notably, the late Sipho Gumede, Errol Dyers and Frank Pako, amongst others. He will share the stage with Sylvester Mazinyane (pia-nist).

Saturday will be dedicated to the late Jazz Master, Errol Dyers and the Schilder family. Taking the stage in

their memory will be composer and multi-instrumentalist Hilton Schilder (the son of the late esteemed South African Jazz pianist, Tony Schilder) and Errol’s brother, guitarist, Alvin Dy-ers. They will be joined by jazz musi-cian, Sylvia Mdunyelwa, who has also worked alongside the Ngcukana Broth-ers, Winston Mankunku and Nick Cart-er amongst others.

The Jazz Masters Tribute forms part of Artscape Theatre Centre’s arts transformation policy, which has as its objective the elevation of formerly marginalised art forms, such as jazz, pantsula and hip-hop, on centre stage alongside Western art forms, conse-quentially offering a platform for all professional art forms as a “home for all”.

tickets (r100 per person) are available via Computicket, or artscape-dial-a-seat 021 421 7695.

Panna Cotta with Wood Roast Pineapple

Prego Sirloin

By Bianca Coleman

When it comes to food, whether it’s fine or fast, consistency is crucial. Which is why I always

salute a certain junk (because it really is) franchise for being consistently bad, despite its glorious advertising.

In the case of Chefs, the food is both fine and fast, and it has main-tained its consistency since it opened almost a year ago.

The concept is that of a small – very small, as in three plus one dessert – selection of dishes which

changes daily, and served from noon with last orders at 8.30pm. To find out what’s on offer you can check the website in the morning (especial-ly if you’ve previously had something you particularly enjoyed and want to know when it’s next available) or just pitch up for a surprise. No bookings are required.

The food is presented in an up-market canteen style, on segmented trays. Unlike canteens, however, your meal will be freshly prepared when you place and pay for your order. The kitchen team is headed by chef Jenny Ward, who brings her skill with

wood-fired cooking, a love for simple and traditional cooking techniques, and a preference for using raw ingre-dients from carefully sourced suppli-ers.

There is no fancy décor in the light, bright venue, no waiters (the chefs themselves bring your food), and no tipping required (although I feel a gratuity for the kitchen staff is always in order).

On the day we visited, the dishes were crispy duck with Asian broth, and vegetable spring rolls with sweet and sour sauce; roasted sirloin prego with a tomato and marinated feta salad and truffle fries; (which is what I had); and caramelised sweet potato with a baby greens salad and a cumin flatbread, which my friend ordered. The portions are generous to say the least, and both meals were delicious.

The dessert was of the day was a silky smooth and utterly heavenly yo-ghurt panna cotta with roasted pine-apple topped with a light-as-air me-ringue. Full details are on the website as well as on tablets at the restau-rant. If you sign up for the email ver-sion, the menu will be delivered to your inbox around 10am every day.

Still or sparkling water is on the house (not a single fizzy sugary drink to be found here), there’s a daily juice and cordial, beer is on-tap and the

wine list changes monthly. Ward likes to choose wines not usually found at other bigger restaurants, that pair well with her food. She also has a policy of not subscribing to delivery services because she believes the food is at its best when it comes straight from the kitchen, and not after it’s been gallivanting around on the back of a scooter.

Chefs, on 81 st Johns street, Gar-dens, is open Mondays to Fridays from 12pm onwards. the kitchen takes its last orders at 8.30pm.Call 21 461 0368 for more infor-mation, or visit www.chefscape-town.co.za.

Local funny man and multi-media kingpin in the making Siv Ngesi will be flexing his comedy skills on the Baxter theatre stage from

October 2 to 14. Ngesi has promised his fans that “this time around I’m speaking about everything, no matter how dirty, taboo or dangerous.”

the next 48hours caught up with the entertainer to find out if he is serious about this threat to let loose, verbally speaking.

You’ve become one of the most recog-nisable brands in the SA entertainment industry. Where does the brand end and the man begin? The brand and the man are the same thing. Authenticity is all I spend my time on; you can’t have the brand and the man be different things. Truth is the only way. I feel the man is a lot more laid back than the brand, but they are the same; one is just more crazy and out there.

You started out in comedy, but have since diversified into many other sec-tors of the industry. Which cap are you most comfortable wearing at the mo-ment?I actually started in acting and then moved into comedy and presenting. Ask-

ing me to pick a favourite is like asking Zuma to pick a favourite wife or corrup-tion charge. But acting is my first and last love. I want to do much more acting

next year when I move to New York to take acting classes and get closer to my first love.

‘Siv-ilized’ is your first one-man show in almost five years. What does it feel like to be returning to the spotlight in whose warm glow you cut your perfor-mance teeth? It’s been so long. I had to get back on stage to strengthen the comedy muscle and it hasn’t been easy, but I have loved every single moment of it. This show is so different to all my other shows. Risks will be taken and I look forward to the journey aspect of it.

What do you have in store for audi-ences with ‘Siv-ilized’? What have you learned about stand-up in the almost half-decade you’ve been away that you’re bringing to the table?I think this show is the most authentic show I have done ever: I speak about some unconventional things and topics; my social media voice comes out a lot. In cocial media I am known for controversy and being outspoken.

Where is the Siv brand jetting off to next?I am busy shooting ‘Man Cave’ all over the world. I just finished a travelling show and then I start another travel-ling fighting show early next year. So my passport never gets a rest.

Two top South African art-ists have been confirmed as supporting acts for award winning band, Bas-

tille, at their upcoming concert at GrandWest. Opening for Bastille at the one night only concert at the Grand Arena on October 4 are Mat-thew Mole and Opposite the Other.

“With less than a month to go until this much anticipated concert, the countdown has certainly begun. We look forward to welcoming top

South African talent to our stage alongside Bastille. It promises to be a super show,” says GrandWest’s PR and Promotions Manager, Elouise Matthys, adding that there are lim-ited tickets still available.

Mole has carved a niche for himself on the local music scene since 2012. His second album ‘Run’ reached number one on iTunes South Africa as well as Gold Sales Status. The album’s first single ‘Run’ was a hit with fans, achiev-ing Platinum Status. Mole also travels the country to perform for fans at festivals such as 5FM’s Cape Town Live Loud, 947s Joburg Day and East Coast Radio’s Durban Day. Mole’s music continues to make the Top 40 charts on South African radio including the likes of 5FM, 94.7 Highveld Stereo, KFM and East Coast Radio amongst others.

Opposite the Other is a young band that has quickly risen to musi-cal fame, with their first ever sin-gle ‘Ride Away’ charting at number eight on the Spotify Global Viral Charts. Their second single ‘Stut-ter Love’ charted at number one on 5FMs SA Top 30 and was voted number five in 5FM Top 100 songs of 2016. The band also collaborated with Jimmy Nevis to write the hit song ‘Control Alt Delete’ and it en-joyed airplay across South Africa. In their short career, Opposite the Other has shared the stage with well known local and international art-

ists. The band recently opened for American band, The Lumineers, on the South African leg of their Cleopatra World Tour. This South African band has also performed alongside Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole, Beatenberg, Al Bairre and Gangs of Ballet.

The Darling Sweet toffee selection

I discovered these delicious tof-fees at the Good Food and Wine Show, and let me tell you they were worth losing a filling for.

The moment I tasted the delicious buttery creaminess of them I was immediately transported back to my childhood, when toffee was made with real cream and butter.

Back in September 2013, 37-year old Frits van Ryneveld, a medical rep living in the quaint little Western Cape town of Darling, met Hentie van der Merwe, an arts lecturer at Stellenbosch University. As the pair tell it, van Ryneveld was the first to come up with the idea of setting up shop to produce a good old fash-ioned, handcrafted toffee; seeing as two of the main ingredients of a good toffee - butter and salt - are historically linked to Darling. (In 1899 two Swedes, Nils Georg Moller and G. Threnstrom, settled in Darling and started the first creamery, mak-ing butter that was revered across the country.)

The idea didn’t take long to in-spire Van der Merwe, who is also a trained chef, to start journeying into the centuries old art of toffee mak-ing, tracking down long-forgotten toffee recipes and experimenting in the kitchen late into the night while still lecturing to his students on the finer points of art and photography during the day.

Six months later, Van Ryneveld re-signed from his job to dedicate all his time to getting the factory up and running. The pair dug into their sav-ings and worked day and night to convert an antique shop into a full-blown production kitchen.

From the start their idea was to

produce a range of high-quality, handcrafted toffees using traditional methods and with no artificial col-orants, flavourings or preservatives added - thus “clean label” products. Furthermore, Van Ryneveld and Van der Merwe wanted to produce a range of toffee flavours unique to Darling and its surrounds, using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. And so Darling Sweet was born!

By July 2014 they had taken on two employees and produced their first three toffee flavours: Tannie Evi-ta’s Classic, Honey & Salt and Sour Fig, which they sold at local craft and food markets, as well as at a few lo-cal outlets.

Since then Darling Sweet has grown at a remarkable pace during which time Van der Merwe also re-signed from his lecturing position at Stellenbosch University to join the company full-time as product devel-oper.

Today Darling Sweet employs 16 permanent members of staff and produces toffee products in a 500m2 production facility in a stately Ed-wardian building on Long street that once housed Darling’s General Dealer business (and was also known as “Re-tief se Winkel”). Since Darling Sweet

took occupation of this architectural landmark at the start of 2016 it has become one of the town’s top tour-ist destinations. Local and interna-tional visitors to Darling Sweet are now welcomed through exquisite wooden doors – open seven days a week – into an old-world toffee shop decorated with a unique collection of antique toffee tins. From here the production process can be viewed through huge glass panes and the

entire product range can be sampled and bought.

In addition to toffees, Van Ryn-eveld and Van der Merwe are also producing toffee spreads, which are becoming increasingly popular as cake toppings, dessert fillings or for eating with a spoon straight out of the jar! But their flagship product is still their acclaimed toffees, coveted for their flavour, authenticity, quality, uniqueness and honest ingredients. They currently boast nine flavours - Tannie Evita’s Classic, Honey & Salt, Red Wine & Chocolate, Orange & Pomegranate, Liquorice, Bird’s Eye Chili, Ormonde Wine and the recently released Coffee Toffee and Mint fla-vour

Explaining the name behind the Tannie Evita Classic toffee, Van Ryn-eveld says: “Pieter Dirk Uys suggested

we name one of our toffee flavours after Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout, one of Darling’s most famous residents, and so we decided to name our Clas-sic Toffee after her. In doing so we pay homage to the amazing work that Uys has done for the Darling community with his Darling Trust, and with the sale of every 150g box of Tannie Evita’s Classic Toffee we donate money to the trust.”

Not resting on their laurels, Van der Merwe and Van Ryneveld re-cently decided to add to the visi-tors’ experience by converting the beautifully proportioned room next to the shop – with its high ceiling and wooden floor – into an exhibi-tion space for art, seeing as Darling sorely lacked such a space. Of course, Van der Merwe, with his knowledge and background firmly rooted in the South African and international art world, is the gallery’s curator and he plans to regularly invite guest curators to put together exhibitions of their choice for the gallery. The Toffee Gallery, as it was named, will showcase the work of artists at the forefront of contemporary art prac-tice in South Africa and abroad.

So what next for Darling Sweet?Says Van Ryneveld: “We are con-

stantly experimenting with new fla-vours and packaging and will soon be launching our new 300g Assorted Toffees gift box - the perfect stock-ing filler for Christmas.”

Darling Sweet is a remarkable suc-cess story and proof that entrepre-neurship, ingenuity, creativity, hard work and recognition and reward are alive and kicking in the Rainbow Na-tion. Now, pass the toffees darling!

Taron Egerton in ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’

Television presenter, food writer and blogger Anél Potgieter will be one of the main attractions at this week-end’s (Saturday, 30 September and Sunday, 1 October) Say Cheese! Ar-tisan Cheese Fair at the Italian Club, Milnerton.

Potgieter, best known as a pre-senter on SABC 3’s breakfast show ‘Expresso’ and Via’s baking show, ‘Bak of Brou’, as well as her weekly food articles in a leading Sunday newspaper and award-winning blog lifeisazoobiscuit, will be showing visitors quick and easy ways to cre-

ate magical treats with cheese on the stove.

“This will be my second year at the show,” says Potgieter. “It was the brainchild of my dearest, belated friend and well-known foodie Miki Ciman. We often spoke about put-ting together a cheese event which will bring together cheese makers and cheese aficionados.

We wanted to give the smaller cheese makers the opportunity to market their products to the general public in an affordable way. They are such a creative bunch - passionate

and dedicated to their craft. I believe Miki would be so proud of this event, which is organised by her daughter Kiki Ciman-Frauenknecht and Elize Nel of A3 Technologies. I’d like to pay tribute to this remarkable woman and mensch!”

Potgieter adds that cheese is such a versatile ingredient. “Think braai-broodjies, pasta, fondue, pizza, aran-cini…these dishes would be nothing without cheese. A piece of artisan-made cheese can take any dish to the next level. And on top of it it’s real comfort food.”

Other activities will include cook-ing demonstrations by Sarie’s food editor, Herman Lensing, and cheese making by La Montanara’s Karla Steyl.

A lively weekend line-up will see top artisan cheese experts, chefs and wine purveyors in attendance, conducting tastings, pairings, and cheese-making demonstrations. Visi-tors will have the opportunity to ex-perience limited production, rare artisan cheeses and learn about the art of making cheese, while support-ing local and sustainable farmers and

cheese makers from as far afield as the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

tickets will be available at the door at a cost of r90 for adults, and r55 for pensioners and scholars aged 12 to 18. Kids under twelve enter free. For more information, send an email to [email protected]; or call 072 795 4214; or visit www.facebook.com/sayCheese-Fair.
