A Brief Description of our Church Council The Church Council will be established according to guidelines set forth in the 2012 Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church and will take responsibility for overseeing all matters related to planning and administering the ministry of the church. Membership: “Members of the church council or alternative structure shall be persons of genuine Christian character who love the church, are morally disciplined, are committed to the mandate of inclusiveness in the life of the church, are loyal to the ethical standards of The United Methodist Church set forth in the Social Principles, and are competent to administer its affairs. It shall include youth and young adult members chosen according to the same standards as adults. All persons with vote shall be members of the local church, except where central conference legislation provides otherwise. The pastor shall be the administrative officer and, as such, shall be an ex officio member of all conferences, boards, councils, commissions, committees, and task forces, unless otherwise restricted by the Discipline” (¶244.3). At-Large Members (9-12 members in rotating 3 year terms).

Ministry Teams: Seven Ministry Teams will undertake strategy and implementation of the overall ministry and outreach of the church. These committees will meet according to a schedule established by the chair, but shall meet at least four times per year. Efforts shall be undertaken to ensure that committee meetings are scheduled so as not to conflict with each other or with significant activities going on in the church. It is suggested that ministry committees establish a regular and predictable schedule of meeting.

o Nurture: Supervises the ministry of congregational care. Stephen Ministries, and Hospitality shall report to Nurture.

o Christian Formation (added 2010): Oversees the total educational and spiritual formation ministries of the congregation, including Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Adult Education, Youth, Confirmation, Library and Recreational Ministries.

o Health and Wellness (added 2010): Works with the staff director of Formation and Program Ministries to oversee ministries of health and health education as well as attending to visitation and follow-up with hospitalized and homebound members. Lay visitation shall report to this committee.

o Outreach: Works to enhance missional awareness and responsiveness in the local community and around the world. The Outreach Committee provides the tangible link between the congregation and other community ministries and social service agencies, provides for the interpretation of these and other parts of our church’s outreach, and encourages missional support through giving and direct service.

o Witness: Undertakes the specific work of ensuring faithful ministry in reaching out and responding to visitors, encouraging evangelism, and cooperatively aiding the Nurture Committee in the incorporation of new members into the congregation.

o Worship: Oversees the ministry of worship in the congregation, including aiding the Staff Worship team in planning, especially for special and seasonal services, establishes guidelines for the use of the Sanctuary and Gathering Room, and provides for training of worship assistants. The Chancel Guild reports to the Worship Committee as a Sub-Committee and oversees the scheduling of Communion Stewards and other worship assistants.

o Communications: Works to develop effective internal and external communications promoting the work and ministry of Seaside United Methodist Church and providing effective channels for providing news and promoting events within the congregation. To accomplish this goal, the Communications Committee is encouraged to utilize a variety of communications media, both electronic and print.

Other Administrative Groups: The roles of the following groups are based on the pattern outlined in the current Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church. These groups relate directly to the Church Council and the Charge Conference.

Future Changes: The Committee on Nominations and Leadership Development on the advice of the Church Council shall monitor the implementation of this ministry strategy and shall recommend adjustments and changes as necessary.

Ministry Reports to Charge Conference

United Methodist Men

Our Mission

The Seaside United Methodist Men worked successfully to realize spiritual growth through projects such as fundraisers which provide the basis for outreach programs that benefit the less fortunate in our community. These fundraisers, while building revenue, also built Christian fellowship among the men and established a sense of purpose to the endeavors. The UMM programs are designed to connect with those whom we are assisting and build life changing, Christ centered relationships.

Our programs are planned and reviewed at our monthly meetings where the men also enjoy a meal together, are given a well-directed devotional, and hear a timely speaker. All is intended to strengthen relationships internally at Seaside while maintaining our supportive efforts in the community.

Our Vision

Our United Methodist Men have been an integral part of the Seaside community. Our intent is to encourage the ministry of Jesus Christ through the outreach activities of our men. We see that happening through the many ways our men participate in Seaside’s endeavors and our UMM outreach activities. We see ourselves growing and continue to look for ways to encourage others to join us in following through on our distinct role in both our church community and our neighborhoods. We are at our best when we lead by modeling Christ in our activities.

United Methodist Women

Seaside’s United Methodist Women contributed to building bridges and connecting people in a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ through their prayers and works. The United Methodist Women of Seaside number approximately 100, each serving through one of the four UMW “Circles” at Seaside, fulfilling the designated purpose of knowing God, and developing creative supportive fellowship through missions and ministries.

The UMW Mission Team consisted of fourteen members, which included the officers and Circle chairpersons. The Team met once a month for devotion and to share local and district information with Circle leaders.

The UMW Circles worked toward making Seaside a vital working community, encountering Jesus Christ, and living abundantly through service to God and neighbor.

The UMW Prayer Shawl Ministry created and donated over 100 shawls and afghans for those experiencing illness or loss, and in celebration of answered prayers.

The Teddy Bear Ministry, comprised of women from all Circles, “built” over 100 Teddy Bears which were given to local law enforcement and emergency agencies.

UMW Members supported Seaside’s S.T.A.R.S. six week summer literacy program by organizing, purchasing and serving the Monday night dinners attended by the students and their families. They served approximately 60+ meals each Monday and shared table fellowship with the families, getting to know them personally and extending Christian love and care.

The S.C.A.R.F. Program (Seaside, Caring and Reaching Friends) donated 300+ much needed items of warmth (scarves, socks, gloves, mittens, etc.) to local homeless shelters, elderly neighbors unable to leave their homes, and to local school backpack programs.

Fundraising events (Game Day, UM Home for Children Epicurean Basket) were held to raise money for many local community and United Methodist district causes.

Donations of food items for international outreach were collected and delivered to UM district locations.

C.A.R.E.S. (Caring and Reaching Everyone, Seaside) a new ministry in partnership with Seaside’s United Methodist Men, provided manual labor for SUMC members who needed assistance with light maintenance projects in their homes.

Christian Formation Ministry Team Report

The title of this report speaks volumes about the advances and vision of the Formation Ministry

at Seaside. Take a closer look -- no longer does the title read, “Christian Formation Committee.” No, it

now reads “Christian Formation Ministry Team.” Discipleship, spiritual development and devotional

growth should never depend on a committee. Committees are traditionally bodies of individuals who

seek to find ways to say “No” to change and evolution. But a Ministry Team...well, that changes

everything!

This group has really learned how to operate as a team of individuals with a common vision to

further implement the gospel into the hearts and minds of the Seaside community. Working as a team,

finding ways to make the impossible happen, this group has made significant strides in elevating the

level of quality and participation in many different discipleship opportunities.

One means by which this was accomplished is by the addition of a Spring semester of Adult Bible

Study classes. Up until this point, Seaside offered a Fall semester, spanning from September to

Thanksgiving, and a Winter semester, from January until Holy Week. This left a large gap from Easter

until June when a class is typically facilitated by a summer Duke Intern. This year, however, the team

decided to add a Spring semester, from Easter until June, so that there will no longer be such a lapse in

time for people’s discipleship and devotional life to gather dust.

Additionally, Seaside is now offering Disciple “Fast Track,” a course that takes students through

the Discipleship study materials at a quicker pace. This has encouraged participation among those who

would otherwise feel too overwhelmed by committing such a long span of weeks to the course. This has

been a successful transition and will continue to be the track offered moving forward.

The Children’s Sunday School ministry has added four new teachers to their Sunday morning

rotation, which has both helped the students hear from different voices as well as allow regular teachers

more freedom to take off as needed. We have also begun discussing the possibility of adding a

Middle/High School class.

A new adult Sunday School class has been formed, meeting each Sunday at 11:00 a.m. This class

has grown in number and has been a positive addition to our Sunday morning offerings. They continue

to look to expand their membership.

This year’s Vacation Bible School was a great success as together we learned about Following

Jesus, the Light of the World. Our numbers held steady from last year, but the smiles, hugs and laughter

are well beyond quantification. We had several new adult volunteers who had previously never helped

with VBS, and they were just as blessed by the experience as the children. New friendships were made,

and most importantly, families throughout the community were shown the love and light of Christ.

We also held a successful Harvest Festival for families of the community wherein they were

invited to come and play games, Trunk or Treat, enjoy free pizza, and participate in a cake walk. This free

event was open to the entire community and has become a welcome and fun tradition as an outreach

event to families in Sunset Beach and beyond.

The MYF made a significant change in moving their Bible Study from Sunday evenings to

Wednesday evenings. This has seemingly been a positive change as attendance has been more steady

and the leadership seems better able to engage in the students’ weekly lives and activities. Through

Bible Study, service projects and fun outings, the MYF, though small, continues to grow in community

with one another. The highlight of the year is of course the trip to Pilgrimage in Fayetteville. This year

we took five students and were given many opportunities to share and learn about important issues

S.T.A.R.S. – Seaside Teaching And Reaching Students

Through the financial support of the Duke Endowment, the Ministries and Congregation of Seaside,

along with civic and community support, Seaside’s S.T.A.R.S. Summer Literacy and Enrichment Program,

completed its third year. Seaside’s Mission of “building bridges and connecting people in a

transformative relationship with Jesus Christ” was realized through the loving and caring Christ-like

example of the over 80 volunteers who cared for our S.T.A.R.S. children and their families. S.T.A.R.S.

continues to “build and connect” both congregational and community volunteers through their time at

S.T.A.R.S., and to inspire them to look at other ways to reach out to our community.

In 2016, S.T.A.R.S. served 24 rising second and third grade students from Jessie Mae Monroe, our

partner school, and their families. Each Monday evening the children and their families attended parent

dinner workshops. Volunteers provided, served and participated in these meals, eating with the

families, getting to know them, “building bridges” with the families and the families with each other.

S.T.A.R.S. children and their families are invited to and attend church activities, all of which bring

together Seaside’s church family with our S.T.A.R.S. family in a Christian environment.

S.T.A.R.S. is one of two similar programs that are largely funded by The Duke Endowment Rural Church

Grant Program. Seaside was invited to participate in an assessment of our six week program along with

the Ubuntu Program, Monticello UMC, Statesville, NC. The assessment on behalf of The Duke

Endowment, was conducted by independent experts in the field of children’s literacy. Both ST.A.R.S. and

Ubuntu students were tested for fluency and comprehension on the first and last days of their

programs. Students, parents and volunteers from both programs provided information at the beginning

and end of the programs through survey responses. While this assessment is a multi-year process,

The Duke Endowment shared their first year results and were pleased to that there was statistical

evidence that, although S.T.A.R.S. is only a six week program, students showed growth in both fluency

and comprehension, and students and parents alike showed a greater interest in and commitment to

reading. Seaside will continue to work with The Endowment on assessment and recommendations.

STARS has also “built bridges” within our community. Local civic and community organizations not only

financially supported the program, but worked alongside our church family in volunteer roles. The

bridge to our community has helped spread the Vision of Seaside, “encountering Jesus Christ, and living

abundantly through service to God and neighbor.”

Music Ministry

Since the Music ministry at Seaside UMC involves all ages (Preschool-Adults), it serves as a magnet to our community, inviting them in to worship and /or membership. The Music Ministry provides many opportunities for service and deeper relationships with God and one another through both large groups (Sanctuary Choir/Jubilee Handbells) and smaller ensembles. During 2016, we began and successfully completed a $90,000 renovation of our Choir Loft which increased the seating to 110 singers by adding pews to the loft, expanded the stage area and installed acoustic paneling for better sound. This project shows how committed the leadership and members of Seaside are to providing the best possible worship experiences for our community. Our Music Ministry team provided an Easter Cantata, a Red, White & Blue Celebration and a Christmas Cantata during 2016. In addition, we offered the community an evening of Jazz Vespers, hosted the Raleigh Ringers, offered a formal Seaside Friends in Concert evening and kicked off the new Shallotte Park amphitheater with an evening of praise music led by our Praise Team. Over 100 talented and willing musicians work together to build bridges to connect our community with opportunities to witness and encounter Jesus Christ. Communications Ministry

Our Mission

Building Bridges to connect people in a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ.

Seaside UMC uses many methods to “connect people in a transformative relationship with

Jesus Christ.” Seaside’s website serves as the primary source of information for both our

congregation and our community. It is often someone’s first impression of our church. The

committee worked to compare our website to other church websites both locally and in large

congregations out of our area. As a result, recommendations were made to improve navigation

on the site. Church Communications is a true bridge that provides connectivity to

congregation, community, and the church!

A vital community, encountering Jesus Christ, and living abundantly through service to God and

neighbor.

The Communications Committee continues to work in support of the church’s vision of “A vital

community, encountering Jesus Christ, and living abundantly through service to God and

neighbor” through the Committee’s support of Seaside’s other Ministries and Committees.

Through the development of an Internal Communications Matrix and our current work of

developing an External Matrix, we serve in an advisory capacity to ensure each Ministry has the

support and ability to provide consistent information through all available communication

channels. This additional support helps the community understand the church’s service to both

God and neighbor, and the impact that has on the community.

Country Fair Committee

Seaside United Methodist Church (SUMC) Mission and Vision:

The 2016 Country Fair committee contributes to Seaside’s mission of building bridges and connecting

people in a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ. Through their work, Country Fair committee

members make Seaside a vital community, encountering Jesus Christ, and living abundantly through

service to God and neighbor.

Seaside’s Country Fair is held each year on the third weekend of September. 2016 was not a “weather

friendly” year for the Fair. Due to inclement weather on the scheduled dates, the Fair was delayed one

week with only marginally better weather. The delay and weather resulted in lower attendance. While

the Fair is a two day event, it is a year-long effort for those involved. Each area’s leaders and team

members work together toward a common goal. Members model for others: generosity as they give of

their time and talents, leadership skills as they work with their teams, a cohesive teamwork

environment along with strong work ethic. In spite of the weather delay, volunteers stepped up to the

challenge, worked hard, cooperated with one another and the result was success!

The primary goal for the Country Fair is to raise funds to extend the work of Seaside by supporting

outreach missions. The proceeds go to outreach programs to support vital programming on a global,

national, state, and local level. In 2016 the Country Fair grossed $56,200. In addition to the money

raised, thousands of dollars of goods were also donated to various local organizations such as Brunswick

Family Assistance and the Edge of the Field Free Store. These donated goods enrich the lives of others.

Through the outreach provided by Country Fair funds people are touched in many different ways and

recognize that Seaside is a vital organization with a strong spiritual core, filled with people that lead by

example, model Christ-like behavior and connect people to Christ.

In addition, the Country Fair is an opportunity for visitors that come to the church grounds to learn more

about Seaside United Methodist Church and discover how they might find a spiritual home here. This

year the Information Booth was expanded to include members of the local organizations that Fair

proceeds support such as Brunswick Family Assistance, the Literacy Council, Providence Home, Seaside’s

Food Pantry and Free Store, offering them the opportunity to share their stories. Tours of the church as

well as information on life at Seaside were offered to all those interested, along with an Invitation to

attend worship and learn more. Outreach to others, building bridges and connecting people is the main

purpose of the Country Fair.

To assist in achieving this mission, the Health and Wellness Ministry's Mission is to: "cultivate outreach programs that encourage individual's physical, emotional, spiritual and social well-being in context of their relationship to God, family and the community. Utilizing experienced nursing, clergy and community volunteers, the committee seeks to develop creative ways to address needs and identify resources to nurture, educate, and guide our Church congregation/community, to establish and maintain a culture that encourages environmental and social support for a healthy lifestyle and within the legal and financial capacity of the committee, to aid those in our church/community who require assistance.

Nurture Ministry The Seaside UMC Nurture Ministry consists of 9 ministries/committees that reach toward achieving the goals, mission, and vision of Seaside. These groups support both our members and community in many different ways.

Divorce Care is a friendly, caring group of people who walk alongside those going through one of life’s most difficult experiences. It is an ongoing program, open to Seaside members and the community. Divorce care meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm. Stephen Ministry provides one-on-one Christian care to those who are hurting. During 2016, eleven candidates completed 50 hours of training and were commissioned as Stephen Ministers on July 12, 2016. There are currently 40 trained Stephen Ministers who continue to minister to individuals in our church and community. Adult Singles Ministry provides opportunities for single members of the congregation to meet periodically for dinner or other entertainment events. Christian Artists is open to the community and provides an opportunity for artists, experienced or novice, to gather weekly for painting and fellowship. The Ministry meets during the spring, fall, and winter seasons. Art work is displayed in an annual art show each year. The Timeless Treasures Quilting Ministry members meet to sew and share their love for both quilting and community. In addition to their many projects, lined clothesline and other patterned place mats were made and donated to the Country Fair. Two Quilts of Valor were completed and presented to two women at Seaside UMC in recognition of and appreciation for their service in the United States Army. The Hospitality Ministry provided and served close to 200 lunches to the people attending the Lenten Luncheon hosted here at Seaside. In December they will host a pot luck dinner for the families of children and supporting Church members who participate in the Joyful Noise Children' Choir Christmas program. The Prayer Warriors are an active group who daily lift up those from our church and community who are in need of prayer. Once each month they gather at the Church altar on a Saturday morning to pray for those on their current list. Their monthly prayer list averages approximately 125 names. The Kitchen Committee, which consists of one very and faithful person, keeps our kitchen clean and organized. She also keeps all supplies currently stocked to support all ministries at Seaside UMC while staying within the allotted budget. Coffee Hour volunteers set up and hosts refreshments for a time of fellowship after the 8:00 and 9:30 am services on Sundays. Currently each ministry at Seaside UMC is assigned monthly coffee hour duties.

Outreach Ministry

Seaside’s Outreach Ministry builds bridges within our community through management of financial

support to the following community programs:

- Seasides’s Food pantry and Free Store provide weekly food and clothing for our Brunswick

County neighbors.

- Providence Home, founded many years ago through the support of Seaside, provides emergency

shelter for Brunswick County teens.

- Brunswick Family Assistance provides emergency assistance and other programs to qualified

low-income families and individuals through monetary donations, food, and clothing and

countless hours of work donated by volunteers.

- Brunswick Literacy Council whose mission is to improve lives by providing literacy skills for

adults.

- SBIC (South Brunswick Interchurch Council) with a mission to improve the quality of life for our

community by meeting basic needs including a food bank/pantry.

- CIS (Communities in Schools) who, over the past 40 years has surrounded students with a

community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

- STARS (Seaside Teaching and Reaching Students) Seaside’s six week summer literacy and

enrichment program serving Jessie Mae Monroe students.

- BCCF (Brunswick Community College Foundation) providing support to second year students in

need of financial support

In addition, Outreach supports many community events for our supported programs which includes golf

tournaments, spelling bees, crop walks, food runs, etc. Outreach also supports BFA’s Angel Tree

program, providing Christmas gifts for children and senior citizens in our community.

Seaside’s Outreach Ministry has also supported ministries such as Brunswick Recovery Center, Wings

(school backpack program), Brunswick County Streetreach (help for the homeless), SERRV, Rainbow

Covenant and NC Methodist Camps.

This year, Outreach added a UMVIM (United Methodist Volunteers in Mission) work day. A busload of

Seaside volunteers traveled to the MERCI Center in Goldsboro for a work day which included packing

flood buckets for local flood victims.

While Outreach is funded through the church, a supplemental fundraiser is held each year. This event,

‘Not Your Mama’s Bake Sale’ has become a Seaside tradition.

Witness Ministry

OUR MISSION: Building Bridges to connect people in a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ. The Witness Ministry of Seaside UMC builds bridges to connect visitors and members by making all who enter our doors welcome in the following ways: Greeting and welcoming Seaside’s visitors and members each Sunday Morning at the Welcome Desk prior to each service. Those who serve at the welcome desk encourage all to wear name tags, answer questions relative to Sunday school classes and provide other information as requested.

Following the 11:00 am service, one of the 18 “Mugger Teams” visit local first time visitors at their homes to thank them for attending Seaside and gift them with a Seaside “Mug”. All New Members are met either at their home or at a convenient place and given a Welcome to Seaside Bag which contains information about our church and the many ministries and events that offer opportunities to become connected within Seaside. New member luncheons are planned and hosted by the Witness Ministry throughout the year. Over 40 new members were welcomed to Seaside at one of the three New Member Luncheons held in 2016. OUR VISION: A vital community, encountering Jesus Christ, and living abundantly through service to God and neighbor. The mission of the Witness Ministry is to continue to enfold our new members into the life of Seaside, and to reach out to new residents of the community with invitations to visit Seaside. Worship Ministry

The Worship Committee, comprised of seven sub-committees, sets the tone for each service on

Sundays as well as special services throughout the year. Our hope and prayer is that each

person in attendance at Sunday morning worship receives the visit of the Holy Spirit.

During 2017, a separate sub-committee was formed to train and schedule communion

stewards. This change was necessary due to the increase in the number of communion stations

from two to four at the 9:30 am service. Additional stations were needed to accommodate the

growing attendance at the 9:30 am service. The added stations resulted in a significant

increase in the number of trained communion stewards to serve throughout the year.

A decision was made to change our floral arrangement vendor beginning in January, 2016.

Bloomers Floral Designs now provides our Sunday morning flowers and has done an excellent

job with both beauty of design and service.

A new “phone-vite” invitation was tested to invite members to attend the Good Friday Noon

and Tenebrae evening services.

The committee added volunteers as Ushers/Greeters and Acolyte/Crucifers to help out when

needed to serve.

The Chancel Guild continued to prepare the church each Sunday as if Jesus were going to visit.

They are presently planning the Christmas decorating for the church and the setup of the

poinsettia tree.

Preparations have been made for Christmas Eve services at 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Communion will

be offered at both.

Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year and Seaside will hold only one service at 10:00 am.

Serving as Chair of this committee has been a real pleasure because the committee members

have such love for the Father.

Administrative Committee Reports to Charge Conference

Staff Parish Relations Committee

The Staff Parish Relations Committee continues to build a strong bond between the church staff and

congregation. It is an effective and efficient communicative tool that links the staff with congregation.

Each member of Seaside’s staff is partnered with an SPRC member for the calendar year. The SPRC

member serves as a liaison between staff and SPRC. SPRC also serves to assist the Pastors with

personnel issues that may arise.

The chairperson of the SPRC attended a Leadership Seminar for SPRC in Wilmington presented by the

Harbor District. During this discussion it became clear that Seaside’s SPRC is very well organized and

working smoothly. As a result of this seminar, an SPRC Covenant was drawn up for Seaside Methodist

Church and now serves as a guideline for conducting future SPRC meetings.

During 2016 the following issues were addressed through SPRC:

o A new custodian was hired this year due to the retirement of a seasoned member of Seaside’s custodial staff.

o The SPRC met regularly during the year and reported on their liaison assignments.

o Due to a serious injury of a close family member, Seaside’s pastors were out of the area for an extended time. It was very gratifying to see how the rest of the staff as well as the congregation came together and picked up the slack so the pastors could deal with this serious situation.

o The SPRC provided the leadership for the Lay Mentoring Team to mentor and monitor the Duke Intern assignment during the summer.

o The SPRC developed objective staff performance review documents to be used during the annual review process.

o The SPRC has begun the process of developing a position that would give our current Director of Program and Formation (an ordained Baptist minister) her clergy status within our church. The addition of additional clergy provides the pastors flexibility in the many duties and services they perform for our growing congregation.

Board of Trustees

Building bridges to connect people in a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ.

1. Continued repairs and replacements within the church facilities to support the many missions of the church.

2. Replacement of key items to make the church more inviting to members and guests of the

church, including the upgrade many light fixtures to LED technology to increase visibility and decrease maintenance and electricity usage.

3. Repairs to correct structural damage caused by water, termite infestation, and mold on

exterior and interior walls in the pre-school area. Repairs included removing and reinstalling windows to prevent future water leaks.

4. Design, construction and completion of a choir loft, including two additional HVAC units and

acoustic remediation for the Sanctuary.

A vital community, encountering Jesus Christ, and living abundantly through service to God and neighbor.

1. The trustees continue to look to the future to provide for expansion of the facilities to allow for additional activities that will allow Seaside to do more outreach to the community. Permanent Endowment & Special Gifts Committee

Building Bridges

The mission of this committee is to provide education and estate planning assistance, and to oversee

the management and investment of estate and other special gifts for the purpose of furthering the work

of God’s kingdom through Seaside United Methodist Church.

This past year we have continued to work on ways to inform the congregation of the purpose of the

PESGC committee and that committee members are available to help anyone who is interested in giving

to the church either now or later.

To this end, we have reached out to the congregation in various ways as listed below:

We continue to update the church’s web site with details of how to create a Legacy of Giving.

Wrote multiple educational articles and/or hypothetical stories about ways of giving while

saving taxes at the same time. These were published in the monthly “Currents” newsletter.

The Recognition Name boards which were developed last year have recently been mounted on

the wall in the Gathering Room Foyer. A Special Recognition Board for all Choir Loft Donors was

developed and is now displayed on the same wall.

After much effort and several revisions, the “SUMC Guide for Gift Planning” was completed and

distributed to the congregation at worship services on July 31. As an introduction to the Booklet,

a video was played at the beginning of each service which featured a Seaside couple reviewing

the contents of the booklet in their home. Two more videos are planned.

Community

Bequests, endowments, and Special Gifts received from members who wish to leave a Legacy of Love is

a way to sustain the growth of our church community and to help assure God’s work is continued in the

future.

Finance Committee The Finance Committee had a productive year. The members were active, enthused and engaged. We

continued the work of the past committees in providing financial oversight for the church, stewardship

of the financial information of the church and provided the Church Council and Church Trustees with

information and recommendations regarding distribution of church funds and fund raising activities.

In 2016 we continued our relationship with our auditing firm. We had a successful full audit in 2015 and

therefore had a partial audit in 2016. That audit was also successful and found that the church is

providing excellent controls for the financial stewardship of church monies. Another partial audit will be

conducted in 2017 under the guidance of the Church Financial Secretary.

The committee received twelve fund raising requests during the year, were recommended for approval

to the Church Council and were approved as submitted. These requests are all mission oriented and the

funds provided are supplemental to the church giving budget. The largest project for the year was the

enlargement and updating of the church choir loft which was accomplished after a $90,000 fundraising

campaign. This successful project is a testament to the faithfulness and commitment of the

congregation to the presence of the church in the community

Through the continued level of congregational giving, we have met all 2016 financial needs and requests

and continue to meet the financial reserve recommendations of the committee.

Recommended
