Stephen Hawking - A standing
example of courage and strengthof character, a brilliant mind
trapped in a disabled body.

His life
Hawking was born on January the
8th 1942 in Oxford, England.
By the time he was 14 he knew hewanted to make a career out of
studying mathematics.
At the age of 20, Hawkingwas diagnosed with the incurable
disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis).Stephen and his daughter

His Studies
At 20, Hawking did research inCosmology at CambridgeUniversity.
After gaining his Ph.D. he becamea Professorial Fellow at Gonvilleand Caius College.
In 1973 Stephen held the post ofLucasian Professor ofMathematics, occupied byIsaac
Newton in 1663.

His Research
Stephen Hawking has studied the basic laws which govern
the universe.

Breakthroughs
He showed that space and time wouldhave a beginning in the Big Bang and
an end in black holes.
He proved that a black hole could emit
particles - now known as Hawking
Radiation.
His goal is to link all the laws of
physics into one Unified Theory of
Everything.

The Origin and Fate of the Universe
Hawking firstly rejected the Big Bang theory as it couldnot be proved scientifically.
His hypothesis has profound religious implications : by
simply being, the Universe could not have had aCreator.
The Pope told Stephen that
scientists should not enquire
into the Big Bang itself, as it
was the moment of Creation
and therefore the work of God.

The Unified Theory of Everything
The way we understandthe world today through
different, partial theories.
Hawking has alwaysdreamed of finding a set
of laws that would make
the unification of physics
possible.
A complete, consistent, unified theory is only the first step: our goal
is a complete understanding of the events around us, and of our
own existence. Stephen Hawking

Conclusion
Stephen Hawking one of the
most remarkable scientists of
out times - the living proof of
how determination can makethe most bewildering dreams
come true.
My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe,
why it is as it is and why it exists at all. Stephen Hawking
