The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new government insurance scheme, delivered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), an independent Commonwealth Government body.

The NDIS is a national approach to access individual funding to support people with disabilities, including psychosocial disability as a result of mental illness.

As a registered NDIS mental health provider, Mentis Assist is passionate about helping you make positive changes to your mental health and wellbeing. Our experienced staff will walk beside you to help you navigate the NDIS and assist you to get the most out of your NDIS package.

Understanding the NDIS

What does the NDIS mean for you?

If you are not currently receiving a mental health service, you will need to contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 to register for the NDIS. The NDIA will send you out an Access Request Form to complete with your GP and/or mental health professional.

Once your application and supporting evidence has been submitted to the NDIS, with the support of your mental health professional, a NDIA Planner or Local Area Coordinator will contact you to arrange an initial assessment and planning meeting with you.

Greater choice and control How do I access NDIS?

Who can access the NDIS?

The NDIS offers a new approach to getting help and services, offering choice and control, providing flexibility with the supports you receive and can be tailored to your individual needs. This also means that government funding is now allocated to you instead of an organisation.

If you are living with a disability, and/or a severe and enduring mental health condition that is likely to be permanent, and you meet the eligibility access requirements, you can become a participant of the NDIS.

OR

If you are already receiving a mental health community support service, you will receive a letter or phone call from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to complete an initial assessment and to arrange a planning meeting with you.

Mentis Assist’s experienced staff can help you with your application and help you prepare for your planning meetings, or you can manage the application process yourself.

Am I eligible for the NDIS?

Source: ndis.gov.au/ndis-access-checklist.html

Do you have Australian permanent residency?

Are you under 65 years of age?

Do you live in an area where the NDIS is available?

Do you usually need support from a person to do everyday things for yourself because of an impairment or condition that is likely to be permanent?

Do you need some supports now to reduce your support needs in the future?

If you suffer from a disability, including psychosocial disability, you may be eligible for NDIS support.

Psychosocial disability may arise from mental health issues that are likely to be permanent.

If you answered yes to all of these questions and have not received a letter or phone call from the NDIA, call 1800 800 110 to request an access request form.

What should I do next?

Once you have been approved to receive a NDIS package, you will be contacted by a NDIA Planner or Local Area Coordinator who will meet with you to discuss your needs and start developing your plan.

It is important to prepare for this meeting. Think about what supports you already receive and any additional supports you may need, your goals and the outcomes you would like to achieve.

Seem daunting?

Where to start and what to do next may feel overwhelming and confusing at times. Mentis Assist’s Support Coordinators (including Partners in Recovery Program - Care Coordinators) are here to help you. Once your plan is complete, we can assist you to get the most out of your plan and supports.

Your NDIS Plan will include information on your goals, your needs, your functionality and the types of support you are funded for.

A NDIS Plan usually lasts for 12 months. After 12 months, your plan will be reviewed by the NDIS to make sure your current supports meet your needs. If anything significantly changes or your plan no longer meets your needs, you can request a review of your existing plan at any time.

Your Plan

When developing your plan with the NDIS, you will need to decide which plan management option is right for you.
