2018-2019

WELCOME TO BUILDING BLOCKS

Our Building Blocks Department is pleased that you have chosen to enroll your child in Building Blocks Preschool. This handbook provides important and practical information about our program and its protocol. It should serve as a reference for you during the year. Parents are essential members of the educational team. Please talk to your child’s teacher or the Building Blocks Director regarding any aspect of the preschool program. We look forward to the opportunity to educate your child.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to provide a foundation towards kindergarten readiness. Explore, Get Set, and Go!

BUILDING BLOCKS PROGRAM INFORMATION

& ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Building Blocks Preschool is a tuition-based preschool for Fox C-6 resident children that are between the ages of 3-5 years. The intent of the program is to reach children who are not experiencing preschool and its many advantages, and to provide care for working families. We are pleased to share that for the 2018-2019 school year we have eight classrooms in six of our elementary schools throughout the school district. Entrance requirements for Building Blocks include:

Must be a Fox C-6 School District resident.

Must be 3 by July 31st of school year that begins in August. If your child is kindergarten eligible, they do not qualify for Building Blocks.

Must be completely potty trained.

Please contact our main office at (636) 282-6915 to register. You will need the following to register:

A completed registration packet (found on our webpage on the district website or the Service Center in our main office located at 849 Jeffco Blvd.).

Proof of residency.

A copy of the student’s birth certificate and current immunization records.

A non-refundable deposit of $160.00. This amount will be applied to your child’s first week of attendance in the program.

CURRICULUM

The Building Blocks Program utilizes the High/Scope Curriculum as the foundation. High/Scope is one of

four, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, approved early childhood curriculums.

High Scope students will:

Become independent, responsible, and confident—ready for success in school.

Learn to plan many of their own activities, carry them out, and talk with other children and their teacher about

what they have done.

Learn through active involvement with people, material, events, and ideas.

Gain knowledge and skills in important concept areas, such as creative representation, language and literacy,

Page 3: A C Building Blocks Preschool 849 Jeffco Blvd. Arnold, MO ......1 D C 4 B A Revised January 2018 Building Blocks Preschool 849 Jeffco Blvd. Arnold, MO 63010 Phone: (636)-282-6915 Fax:

initiative and social relations, movement, music, classification, number, space, and time.

OUR PHILOSOPHY OF LEARNING

In a caring and positive atmosphere, we create a warm and happy place for preschoolers to learn. As we bridge

the gap from home to school, we guide children to a continued good self-image while building social skills in a

school setting.

Sensory, motor, perceptual, and language skills are introduced through materials and activities which are both

child-centered and teacher-directed. Work is planned which emphasizes the process rather than the product,

fostering a sense of accomplishment and pride. The focus of learning is on readiness skills needed in kindergarten.

Based on the theory that children learn through play, classroom routines encourage active involvement,

meaningful experimentation, and reinforcement through repetition. Schedules are designed which balance

structures and free choice, as well as active and quiet times.

Recognizing that children grow in predictable stages, we treat each child as an individual, working from the level

each child has attained and moving forward one step at a time. We teach a love of learning by allowing children

to experience their own state of development and help them to feel success without pressure.

Children first learn to listen and speak, then use these and other skills to explore reading and writing. Like child

development in general, language development is interrelated. Children who have many opportunities to listen

and speak tend to become skilled readers and writers. Children who can put their ideas into writing become better

readers. Children who read often learn to love reading and become better listeners, speakers, and writers.

PROGRAM INFORMATION AND YEARLY CALENDAR

Monday-Friday: 6:15 a.m.-6:15 p.m.

Educational instruction begins at approximately 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Building Blocks hours before 8:00 am

and after 3:30 pm are loosely structured. We offer a relaxed environment during the “before” and “after”

setting and include activities such as free choice, arts and crafts, outside time, and other fun activities. During

the before and after hours members of our Character Kids Club staff care for the children at each location. The

Building Blocks children are blended with the Character Kids Club students and given age appropriate free

choice options. The Character Kids Club staff provide them with a nurturing, safe, comfortable environment

before and after their school day.

Our Building Blocks Program operates from its own school calendar (attached in this handbook). Although it is

very similar to the district calendar, a few extra days of attendance are added that are not on the district

calendar. Our program does not operate on the following days:

Labor Day

The day after fall parent/teacher conferences

Thanksgiving Break

Holiday Break (December)

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

President’s Day

The day after spring parent/teacher conferences

Spring Break

PROGRAM COST AND BILLING INFORMATION

Weekly tuition: $160.00

Building Blocks Preschool is tuition-based; therefore it is essential that we receive weekly payments. Payment

is due on Friday, prior to week of service. If payment is not made by Monday morning of the week of service,

you may not be allowed to drop off your child. You can pay by credit/debit card in your child’s portal, by personal

check, or by money order. Please give a check or money order to your child’s teacher. Building Blocks does not

accept cash payments for tuition.

A $15.00 fee will be assessed on all ‘insufficient funds’ (NSF) checks and charged to the child’s account. If

we receive 2 NSF checks, it will become necessary for us to request all future payment in the form of a

money order or credit card.

The weekly tuition will only be adjusted on weeks with scheduled days off school such as holidays, or school

closures due to inclement weather. Payments will not be pro-rated for days missed due to illness, planned

vacations, or any other absences. Please note that Building Blocks must collect weekly tuition in order to

keep your child active on our rosters. We have an extensive wait list at each location; therefore, failure to make

weekly payments could result in your child’s enrollment being terminated in order to accommodate the next child

on the list. Any questions or concerns regarding weekly tuition may be addressed to the Building Blocks office

staff. We can be reached at 636-282-6915.

Our office will provide tuition tax statements in January to the parent name listed as household parent in your

child’s portal. Should you need statements more frequently, please contact our office or speak with your child’s

teacher.

Upon request, Building Blocks is required to release billing information to a child’s parent or guardian. Since

all of your child’s pertinent information, including tuition fees and payments, are in your child’s portal, both

resident and non-resident parents have access to this information.

If you have more than one child enrolled in Building Blocks, there is a 10% discount off the total tuition. To

receive the additional child discount, siblings must be living in the same household and both children must be

attending Building Blocks. Should you have a child using Character Kids Club and a child using Building

Blocks, the child in Character Kids Club will receive the 10% discount on tuition.

WITHDRAWAL REQUIREMENTS

A two week notice is appreciated should you choose to withdraw your child from the program. Please give the

notice to your child’s teacher and contact the Main Office at 636-282-6915.

PARENTS SHARING JOINT CUSTODY

Building Blocks Preschool strives to be sensitive to the needs of families and children in joint custody

situations while still providing the highest quality of care and safety for your child.

The parent who registers the child for the program is responsible for weekly payments. If the custodial

agreement states otherwise, the custodial agreement must be placed on file with the Building Blocks Main

Office. If each parent is responsible for a certain percentage of the tuition, the parents need to notify Building

Blocks of the situation. Building Blocks will notate in your child’s portal which parent made payment and the

amount. This information will be recorded with comments to indicate “mom’s” payment or “dad’s” payment.

Please be advised that each parent must assume this payment responsibility because the Building Blocks

Department will not become involved in a financial dispute with parents sharing joint custody. Please make

sure each parent has a signed payment agreement on file with the Building Blocks Office. If one parent falls

behind on the weekly tuition, the child will not be able to attend Building Blocks until the account is current. If

designated individuals are limited to picking up a child on assigned days, the Building Blocks office, and the

Building Blocks school building office must have this legal documentation on file.

SIGNING IN AND OUT/LATE PICK UP POLICY

Children must be signed in and out of our program each day with a full signature and a time. Children will

only be released to persons listed in the child’s portal as authorized contacts/pick-ups. In the event of divorce or

separation, we are required to release the child to either parent unless legal documentation states otherwise.

Parents/Guardians should submit to Building Blocks any legal documentation to prevent unauthorized pick up

by a non-custodial parent. Written authorization for pick up does not supersede legal documentation. If an

authorized pick-up appears to be intoxicated or under the influence, the children will not be released from

Building Blocks. The Building Blocks Staff and Director will assist in making alternative arrangements.

Children will not be released to anyone who has not been authorized to pick up by the parent. Photo

identification will be required to be shown by any one picking up the children until we have established a

relationship with that person. An authorized pick-up must be of legal driving age and able to present a valid

driver’s license.

A $1.00 per minute late fee will be assessed when a child is picked up after closing. Continuous late pick-up can

result in termination of your child’s enrollment. We know emergencies occasionally occur; therefore, contact

your child’s Building Blocks classroom and/or the Character Kids Club Coordinator and let the teacher know you

are running late and we will be happy to work with you.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Strong home-school relationships are basic building blocks for a child’s future. Parents, children, and teachers

benefit from learning and working together. We understand that the education of children is a partnership and

we invite you to share your thoughts with us at any time, and we will make every effort to keep you informed

about your child’s growth at school.

In an effort to keep you informed of your child’s progress, we will have two conferences a year to review

assessments of your child’s growth. Please sign up for a conference time, in October and March, on a sheet

provided by your child’s teacher.

If you and your child’s teacher are concerned about your child’s development, you can request an early screening

by Parents as Teachers (PAT) to evaluate your child. For some children this can result in further evaluation by

our Fox C-6 Early Childhood Center for services in areas such as speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy,

etc. If this circumstance occurs, the goal of the screenings and services is to work with you to prepare your child

for kindergarten. All children enrolled in our Building Blocks Program kindergarten eligible for the following

school year will be screened by PAT. A parent permission form has been included in your enrollment paperwork

regarding this opportunity our Building Blocks students receive.

BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays are important milestones for preschoolers. Any snack sent to be shared with classmates should be

purchased from the store and individually wrapped. Please communicate with your child’s teacher if you’d like

to bring a special treat. We too want to make this a special day for your child.

PARTIES

During the school year, approximately 3 parties will be held for the preschoolers that include an autumn party

(October), a holiday party (December), and a Valentine’s Day party. Parent volunteers are encouraged and

welcome. A small party fee may be asked of you to help cover some party expenses, and items needed.

FIELD TRIPS

Once each semester the preschoolers will attend a field trip. Our school policy is that a family member must

accompany their child as well as provide transportation to and from the field trip location. The field trips not only

give the children an opportunity to bond beyond the classroom but they also allow parents the opportunity to meet

one another and socialize. The two times a year field trips are scheduled, your weekly tuition will be pro-rated

provided your child attends the field trip. There will be no before or after care available on field trip days.

Your child’s teacher will communicate with you about the cost of the field trip, and collection of those fees.

Typically the teacher will create a classroom T-Shirt with their classroom name. These shirts are generally worn

on field trip days and other classroom activities. The costs for these vary from year to year and depend on the

vendor. Your child’s teacher will communicate information about T-shirt fees.

CHILD GUIDANCE POLICY

The staff will carefully use conflict that arises in the classroom to help children learn about appropriate ways to

vent anger and frustration and to solve everyday problems. Although discipline is viewed as ongoing, the focus

is on positive guidance to help children begin to learn about the effects of their actions on others and to find

socially acceptable behaviors. The philosophy is based on respect for the child’s self-esteem, setting reasonable

Page 7: A C Building Blocks Preschool 849 Jeffco Blvd. Arnold, MO ......1 D C 4 B A Revised January 2018 Building Blocks Preschool 849 Jeffco Blvd. Arnold, MO 63010 Phone: (636)-282-6915 Fax:

7

limits and consequences, and encouraging increased self-discipline, while also promoting respect for each other.

To provide a safe, positive learning environment, the staff will assist each child in becoming familiar with

classroom rules and expectations. We believe in setting limits for children as they grow to let them know that

they can count on the adults in their life to make them feel safe and secure about their environment.

If your child’s teacher has concerns that the child guidance implementations are not successful, a conference with

the parent may be requested by the teacher. The purpose of this conference is to seek suggestions from the parent

on how they may handle certain behaviors at home, to ensure that on-going communication between teacher and

parent is occurring, and to gain additional resources to help correct behaviors in the classroom. Additionally, if

an on-going behavior concern does not seem to be improving after all options have been implemented, the teacher

and director of the program may request a parent meeting to discuss whether Building Blocks is the right

environment for the child. If a child is having a difficult day and is not complying with rules and expectations

after additional redirecting, and all forms of guidance have not been successful, the parent may be called to have

their child picked up early. If a pattern of parent pick up persists, and an on-going behavior concern routinely

disrupts the classroom environment, and the ability to implement lessons is difficult, then Building Blocks

reserves the right to terminate the child’s enrollment in the program.

POTTY TRAINING

For a child to be eligible for Building Blocks, the child must be completely potty trained. Building Blocks does

understand that preschoolers will have accidents. However, if a child has multiple accidents over a short period

of time (unless a medical cause has been determined and documentation is on file) Building Blocks will assume

that potty training has not been achieved and will reserve the right to terminate service. If a bowel movement

accident occurs, according to district policy, the child must clean themselves up with adult direction. However,

if this is not effective, we will require that a parent or an emergency contact come clean the child up or pick the

child up immediately. If the child does not have diarrhea, the child may return to Building Blocks when the child

has been cleaned up. If the child does have diarrhea, the child must remain at home until he/she has been symptom

free for 24 hours. Children who have urine accidents will have the opportunity to clean themselves up and change

clothes if a change of clothes has been provided. Regardless of what kind of accident, if there are no additional

clean clothes available, the child will be required to be picked up or the parent may come to assist their child with

clean-up, change clothes, and the child can return to class.

In the course of potty training, children may not always do a good job of cleaning themselves after a bowel

movement. Building Blocks staff is unable to clean children after they have completed a bowel movement. If

you are concerned about your child’s cleanliness, we encourage you to provide flushable wipes that we will have

your child use each time they use the restroom.

THE PRESCHOOL STAFF

Our Building Blocks teachers meet a minimum requirement of an Associate’s Degree; however, many have a

Bachelor Degree in Education or a related field. In addition to CPR/1st Aid certifications and Basic Sanitation

certifications, all staff receives training about educating preschool students through on-going professional

development opportunities and start of the school year training sessions.

FAMILY GROUPING

One way to make early childhood settings more like home is to use mixed age groupings, just like siblings might

do in their own homes. Each Building Blocks classroom likely has young three year olds up to children potentially

turning five at the start of the school year. Younger children benefit from the modeling of older children and older

children can strengthen their skills and increase their confidence by helping younger children. This concept will

be executed when appropriate in the classroom.

Page 8: A C Building Blocks Preschool 849 Jeffco Blvd. Arnold, MO ......1 D C 4 B A Revised January 2018 Building Blocks Preschool 849 Jeffco Blvd. Arnold, MO 63010 Phone: (636)-282-6915 Fax:

PERSONAL ITEMS

Our classrooms are well equipped with toys, games, and materials of special interest for young children. Personal

toys, money, and jewelry should be left at home. It is difficult to be responsible for items that can be easily

damaged or misplaced at school. There will be scheduled “Show & Tell” days during the year so that your child

will have the opportunity to bring from home, a special personal item.

NAP TIME

Our classrooms will have an approximate one hour to one and a half hour naptime each day. A toddler cot is

provided for each child during naptime. Due to storage limitations, we ask that you send your child with a beach

towel or light blanket, and a very small travel pillow for nap time. All blankets, pillows, and other nap items will

be stored in an extra-large zip lock bag, which can be purchased at local grocery/department stores. These items

are sent back home weekly for proper laundering. We appreciate that not all children will fall asleep during

naptime; however, we do require that they rest quietly during this period. Picture books and soft music are allowed

if a child struggles with sleeping during this timeframe.

CLOTHING

Children need to wear play clothes that are practical, comfortable and easy for them to pull up and down. To aid

their self-help and independence, please dress them in clothing that will encourage self-help skills. We also

encourage an extra set of clothes be available at school should your child spill something on their cloths,

accidentally get muddy or wet while playing outdoors, or have a potty accident that would require clean clothes.

We will go outside to play daily, weather permitting. Be sure to dress your child accordingly. Be sure to label

all garments that are removable. Shoes with non-slippery soles (tennis shoes) are ideal.

TERMINATION

Though this program is operated by the school district, unlike school, it is a privilege for a child to attend this

tuition based program; it is not his/her right. Therefore, Building Blocks reserves the right to release or restrict

children, families, parents or guardians from the Building Blocks program should the situation warrant. If a

child is terminated, there will be no refund or credit given for days missed due to termination.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

The Building Blocks staff makes every effort to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.

We hope your child will be well and in attendance every day, however, illnesses are common with young

children and if any sign of illness is present, please keep him/her home. The following symptoms could indicate

a contagious disease:

Fever/pain Vomiting

Diarrhea Skin eruption/rash

Extreme fatigue Swelling/redness of throat

Reddened, weeping eyes Constant sneezing/productive cough

Parents are requested to keep their child home if there is a presence of any of the above symptoms. The child

will be admitted to class when he/she has been free of any and all of these symptoms and has not required

fever/pain medication for a minimum of 24 hours. Should these symptoms develop while at school, the child

Page 9: A C Building Blocks Preschool 849 Jeffco Blvd. Arnold, MO ......1 D C 4 B A Revised January 2018 Building Blocks Preschool 849 Jeffco Blvd. Arnold, MO 63010 Phone: (636)-282-6915 Fax:

9

will be cared for until parents can be notified to pick him/her up. We ask that someone try to arrive within an hour

to pick-up the ill child. If a symptom persists, such as a rash/cough or if a communicable disease is confirmed

such as measles, or chicken pox, admittance may require a statement from the child’s physician declaring the

condition non-contagious.

Children with head lice cannot attend school. Our policy states that children must be “nit-free” before returning

to school to keep from spreading lice. The school nurse must check your child before he/she returns to the

preschool program. The school nurse is available at the start of a regularly scheduled school day until school

dismisses.

Our department asks that you call your child’s school building and report your child’s absence. Our teachers plan

several activities which include all of the children. Therefore, it is helpful to know the number of students that

they will have in attendance each day. If your child has been diagnosed with strep, flu, etc., please notify the

teacher and the school nurse.

ILLNESS AND INJURY PROCEDURES

If a child becomes ill after arrival, a parent will be notified and expected to make arrangements to pick up

the sick child as soon as possible, not to exceed one hour. If the school nurse is on duty, your child may remain

in that office until you are able to pick up; if the nurse is not on duty your child will be made as comfortable

as possible in the classroom, or Character Kids Club area, if before or after the school day, while he or she

awaits your arrival.

Minor injuries, such as scratches, scrapes, insect bites, etc., are treated by the preschool staff or the school

nurse, if necessary. Plenty of TLC is always given!

Any serious injury or head injury will be reported to the parents immediately so that appropriate action may

be taken.

If a major injury occurs, the staff will immediately call for professional help (school nurse and/or 911).

Parents, designated emergency contacts, or the child’s doctor will be notified immediately.

If an emergency is such that immediate transportation to the hospital is necessary, a district staff member

from Fox C-6 will accompany the child and will have on their person the Emergency Consent Form signed

by the parent.

Prescription and non-prescription medications shall be in the original container and be labeled with the

original prescription label including the child’s name, instructions, including times and amounts for dosages,

and the physician’s name.

A separate “District Medication Administration” form (your child’s teacher can provide you with this) is

needed for each medication.

This form is valid only for the dates indicated on the prescription.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

Prior to attending preschool, the Department of Health and the state of Missouri require that all children be current

on their preschool aged immunizations. Immunizations must be submitted with enrollment forms before your

child is officially registered. You can learn more about requirements at: Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services

Bureau of Immunizations 930 Wildwood Drive Jefferson City, MO 65109 800.219.3224

ALLERGIES

Please contact the Building Blocks Director, Sue Belleville (636-282-6915), or the Nursing Director, Kim

Schumacher (636-282-5184) if your child has any life threatening allergies. A conference and Action Plan

will need to be completed and any reasonable accommodations discussed prior to your child starting the

program.

EARLY DISMISSAL/SCHOOL CANCELLATION

If the Fox C-6 School District is closed, then Building Blocks Preschool will also be closed. It may be

necessary to cancel or dismiss school early because of an emergency situation. Such situations may include

inclement weather, utility failure, extreme cold, etc.

In the event of an emergency situation:

No child will be allowed to leave with another person, relative or babysitter, unless we have written parental

permission in the student’s file or presented to us at the time the child is picked up.

All parents or designated parties must sign the student out in the office or temporary Student Release Station.

All students are expected to be picked up immediately should an early release occur.

School cancellation or early dismissal information will be announced on local news stations, radio stations,

twitter, through voice/text school messenger alerts, and our district’s website.

Because an early dismissal can happen at any time, especially during the winter months, you are encouraged to

make arrangements NOW as to who will care for your child and/or pick up your child from the Building Blocks

program. Please copy and keep as your reminder the information you provide in your child’s portal that includes

early release information.

Phone calls during weather alerts or emergencies are discouraged as we are waiting on weather reports, updates,

and information from our administration and transportation offices.

Additional program information

Building Blocks will provide a morning and afternoon snack for your child each day. In addition to

lunchtime, milk is also provided with their morning snack. All snacks served by the department are pre-

approved snack items through our Food and Nutrition Department.

Building Blocks provides a hot lunch each day; however, you may pack a sack lunch if you prefer.

On days when Building Blocks is in session, but K-12 is not, pizza will be delivered as the entrée for

their hot lunch, along with side dishes that meet district nutritional guidelines.

Building Blocks classrooms have a teacher and an aide present each day.

Students who need to be dropped off before the school day begins or picked up after the school day

ends, will be in the care of Character Kids Club staff. This option is included in the weekly tuition of

$160.00. For more information about the Character Kids Club visit the webpage at:

http://www.fox.k12.mo.us/programs/character_kids_club

Building Blocks teachers will use social media outlets to communicate regularly what is taking place in

the classroom. You may also ask to join our Facebook group: “CKC & Building Blocks” where you will

find current program information, photos of activities, and moments of joy your child is experiencing

while in our care.

Our Building Blocks teachers’ schedules are approximately 8:00 am-4:30 pm each day. Our aides’

schedules are approximately 7:30 am-2:30 pm each day.
