Audubon Canyon Ranch Annual Report 2011 2

An Incredible 50-Year Journey Rumor has it there’s a big birthday just around the corner. In fact, Audubon Canyon Ranch will be lighting 50 candles next year as it celebrates five remarkable decades of protecting nature through land preservation, environmental education and conservation science!

As we stand on the threshold of this remarkable chapter in ACR’s history, we want to thank you — our supporters, benefactors and volunteers — for giving us the gift of this incredible journey.

During the past 12 months, Audubon Canyon Ranch has made a number of important and lasting achievements in the communities which we serve. Among these are:

• Completing the Natural Resources Management Plan for the Modini Ingalls Ecological Preserve to guide its future management

• Hiring a Director of Education to guide ACR’s education programs and adding a part-time Community Outreach Coordinator

• Touching the hearts, souls and lives of nearly 7,000 school children through our docent-led nature hikes and programs and attracting more than 5,000 visitors to our preserves

• Putting our conservation science on full display by producing several scientific reports, presentations and peer-reviewed publications to educate key opinion-leaders on critical conservation issues

• Hosting our first major fundraising event, The Art of Eating, drawing more than 300 guests to ACR’s Bouverie Preserve

Before we light the candles, however, let’s look at the many opportunities that await ACR in the coming year. In addition to continuing the many elements of our education, habitat restoration and conservation science programs, we are:

• Creating a long-term vision for the next 50 years that will keep ACR effective, relevant, credible and cutting edge

• Preparing to double ACR’s land holdings by expanding our preserve system by an additional 3,000 acres in northern Sonoma County

• Evaluating the start of a multi-year capital campaign to raise new and urgently needed funds for renovating and “greening” ACR’s physical properties

• Expanding and deepening collaborations and partnerships with like-minded organizations in the Bay Area

We encourage you to take time to explore these pages and learn how your financial investment in ACR helps us to meet and deliver on our mission — day in and day out. It is because of your generous and caring support that ACR is able to make a difference and be an agent for positive and lasting change.

Thank you … and now let’s light the candles!

Audubon Canyon Ranch is grateful to every one of the over 2,200 individuals, businesses and organizations that made a broad range of financial and in-kind gifts from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011. Your generosity makes it possible for ACR to protect nature through land preservation, environmental education and conservation science programs. You make the ACR mission possible, and we thank you. Though we believe strongly that ‘every gift makes a difference,’ space constraints make it possible to print only gifts of $250+.

We are eternally grateful to the 820 ACR volunteers who taught, inspired, monitored and devoted their time and energy to our programs this past year. We wish to thank the ACR Board of Directors, all of whom made personal financial gifts to Audubon Canyon Ranch, in addition to their gifts of time and leadership.

STEWARDING OUR WILDLANDS • Provided the technical content for a

$1M grant awarded to the GGNRA and Point Reyes National Seashore for wetland restoration in West Marin

• Achieved a major victory – after years working to preserve the Tomales Dunes, they are now protected by the Master Plan for Lawson’s Landing

• Prevent invasion of non-native pest plants with an “early detection rapid response” system for the nearly 5,000 acres ACR now manages

• Coauthored a regional report, The State of Birds in San Francisco Bay

• Planted 7,000 native grass plugs and monitored 500+ oak trees for Project GROW thanks to 18 Bouverie Preserve stewards and other volunteers

• Monitored the effects of rainfall and climate change on heron and egret populations as part of ongoing research projects

• Collaborated with local scientists on creating a list of species of local interest in the Tomales Bay Watershed

• Propagated thousands of plants in the ACR native plant nursery for restoration projects at Martin Griffin Preserve and Bouverie Preserve

• Celebrated 22 years of shorebird and waterbird monitoring on Tomales Bay, a program that provides important avian conservation data

• Completed the plan for managing the Modini Ingalls Ecological Preserve in northern Sonoma County, after two years of field study

• Surveyed heronries in the Northern California coastal region to provide the US Fish and Wildlife Service a population snapshot for conservation and planning

• Discovered several uncommon serpentine-dependent plants, including Collomia heterophylla, in the remote Ingall’s Bluffs of the Modini Ingalls Ecological Preserve

• Concluded year two of the Breeding Bird Assessment at the Modini Ingalls Ecological Preserve, and reported preliminary results in the 2011 Ardeid

• Published a scientific study on the effects of predation pressure on Great Egret nesting behavior

PARTNERS IN CONSERVATIONACR’s Partners in Conservation directly support conservation science and habitat protection work being conducted on ACR’s thousands of acres of protected wildlands in Marin and Sonoma counties. With annual gifts of $5,000 or more, Partners in Conservation are helping ACR scientists provide solutions to regional problems in conservation biology that affect the ecological landscapes in central coastal California.

ACR MEMBERSHIPIn 2011, Audubon Canyon Ranch launched a membership program, through which many of our longtime (and new!) supporters became members of ACR. This program allows us to acknowledge members with specific benefits, while helping us better predict future funding. We are grateful to the following supporters who became ACR members in 2011.
