God raised Jesus. Repent. Be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Receive the Holy Spirit. This is the message of Peter and John as we follow the story of the Church’s growth in the first century. The 50 days of Easter give us an opportunity to reflect on this message as we take in what it all means for us today—at this time in the Church’s history, our Parish’s 90th Anniversary, and through our personal resurrection stories. Our newly baptized and confirmed will continue their journey of reflection upon the Scriptures and all that happened during the Easter Vigil. Together we pray that the Holy Spirit will inspire us to proclaim the Good News and deepen our involvement in the growth of the Church. Ordination Congratulations to the four men ordained to the transitional diaconate in our Archdiocese last Saturday: James Houbeck, Mark Livingstone, John Maksim and our own Christopher Muer. It is worthwhile to note that John Maksym comes from our neighboring parish St. Ambrose. So, two parishes in Grosse Pointe Park rejoice with the new ordinandis! Please keep our seminarians in our prayers. Be sure to check out the pictures on our website. Classical Concert What a concert it was! Last Saturday evening our church reverberated with songs of love, faith, and hope, with arias from the famous operas, with classical music, and fine commentary from Dina and Eric Winter, of Tuesday Musicale of Detroit who organized the event. It was through the generosity of the artists and The Piano Place who allowed us to use their fine grand piano, that made this Tribute Concert to St. Clare Parish possible. Thank you to all, and a special thank you to David Troiano and Paul Roach from St. Clare who opened the concert with the music of George Handel. Thank you to the 90th Anniversary Committee for preparing the afterglow party in the parish hall. Thank you to all who came and supported our celebration of St. Clare, and for your financial donation to restore our piano. We raised $2,219 toward the restoration of our Petrof piano. We are about half way there. If you would like to contribute but were unable to attend the concert, special envelopes are available at the entrances of our church. We look forward to hosting more of these special concerts in our beautiful church in the future. Thank you I would like to express my gratitude to several people who made Stations in the Street on Good Friday possible. This was our second time, and it seems like it will become an annual event on Good Friday in our Grosse Pointe community at large. Thank you to: Colleen Keelan for preparing the programs and promo materials; Mike McDevitt and Bill Harrington for making sure the sound system worked properly; Dennis Hartman for the finishing touches on the processional cross, Carol and Roger Jacklyn for help in delivering all of the materials to the site of the Stations; to the City of Grosse Pointe for the cooperation and collaboration in making this event possible; and finally to all of you, the parishioners of St. Clare, for your participation and support. It truly was a sign of unity and prayer among the people of Grosse Pointe. (Continued on page 3)

First Reconciliation and First Communion Congratulations to our 20 young parishioners who celebrated their First Confession last Sunday. Thank you to Sr. Kathy, Sr. Mary Peter, Ms. Samantha Cooley, and Ms. Theresa Vogler and all who prepared these children for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Their First Communion is scheduled for May 7th at the 11:00 a.m. Mass.

Resurrection Stories This weekend we begin our Resurrection Story series. During our Easter season people will share their faith encounter with Christ. I hope that these stories will resonate with your own Resurrection Story.

Month of May May is dedicated to Mary, a special time of prayer to the Blessed Virgin. With Mary, we rejoice in Christ’s Resurrection from the dead. We can honor Mary by praying the Rosary, Angelus, and many other Marian devotions. I am wondering if you could name seven joys of Mary – do you remember the seven sorrows of Mary? Joys are the traditional counterpart of her seven sorrows. These joys are: Annunciation, the Birth of Jesus, the Adoration of the Magi, the Resurrection, the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven, the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and Mary’s coronation as Queen of Heaven.

Invitations • There will be a special evening for divorced and separated

Catholics presented by Lisa Duffy, author and guest speaker at St. Paul on May 5 from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Please see our website, tables at the back for the church, or bulletin board for more information.

• Come and join us for a Spaghetti Dinner in support of HART Haiti and Africa Relief Team Mission Trip, on Friday May 5, from 5:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. in the Social Hall.

• Come and join us for the Mass with the Sacrament of the Sick on Saturday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m. Invite someone who is in need of the spiritual or physical healing. Let us pray together.

From the Desk of our Pastor

• Come and join us for the Parish Spring Cleaning next Saturday May 6. See the posters at the entrances of our church.

I hope you will be able to join us for these events.

Coming Soon to our Parish What: Vatican International Exhibition of Eucharistic Miracles. When: May 8-15 Where: Parish Hall. Tell me more: An extensive collection of photographs and historical records presenting a sampling of ancient and modern Eucharistic Miracles that have taken place in various parts of the world. All the miracles in the exhibition are Church-approved. The exhibition has been to more than 500 parishes in Italy and is currently traveling around the world. Now it is coming to our Parish!

Faith Formation A common question when adult faith formation activities are scheduled in the spring is "What happens if I have to miss a week? How can I catch up?" Because we are using a series from Formed, which is available online to all parishioners, you can watch (or re-watch) any video at any time on your smart phone, tablet, computer, or smart TV. Simply set up an account by going to formed.org, enter your email, and follow the instructions to set up an account. Our parish code is 6ZGVKQ. You will simply have to log in and locate the program under the "Programs" section to view what you have missed--or any other program that might be of interest. Once you have an account, sign in with your email and password. Printed instructions are available on the tables at the doors of the church. While you are at the site, take a look at the many movies, programs, podcasts, and books that are available to you at no charge. Be Bold. Be Holy. Be Catholic

Holy Land Pilgrimage I am pleased to announce that in this special year of our 90th Anniversary, we are organizing a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It will take place October 18th-27th. The approximate cost is $3,490. Arrangements are being handled by Nobile Travel Tours, Inc. www.nobiletraveltours.com

Have a blessed week,

Fr. Andrew

St. Vincent de Paul NewsUtility help is still available through the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP). Yes, the weather has turned, but individuals and families who are burdened with past due heating

expenses with DTE or Consumers Energy may be qualified for a MEAP grant. A recent bonus to this grant is the EcoWorks Energy Savers Workshop held every other Saturday here at St. Clare. Participants get great energy saving information and advice, as well as a “goody bag” with supplies to improve energy efficiency at home. Following the 80 minute class, our conference volunteers collaborate with Vincentians from nearby parishes to process energy applications. Our next dates are May 6 and 20; however our Vincentians are able to expedite the process in urgent/shut-off situations. For more information, or to be screened for eligibility please leave a confidential message on our assistance line: 313-647-5062 and one of our volunteers will return your call. Thanks to those who leave non-perishable food and personal items in our SVdP baskets at the church doors. Your donations are very welcome additions to our emergency food pantry, and we are grateful for anything you can share! Currently we are trying to stock up on jelly (in non-glass containers), breakfast bars and toilet paper. Did you know that toilet paper CANNOT be purchased with food stamps?

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Third Sunday of Easter In his Gospel, St. Luke, the evangelist, retells of Jesus’ post-Resurrection encounter on the first day of the week with two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus. While he opens their hearts and minds to the messianic message prefiguring Christ in the Scriptures, they do not recognize the Lord until He breaks bread with them that evening. In this encounter, Jesus follows the basic structure of the Mass we celebrate today — Liturgy of the Word, a homily (Jesus’ explanation of the Scriptures), and the Liturgy of the Eucharist (breaking of bread). In the Acts of the Apostles and his First Letter, Peter likewise encourages us to recognize Jesus as our Savior. As Christian stewards, where do we recognize our Lord? Faithful stewards embrace Jesus as truly present, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist, which gives us “our daily bread” and forgives our less serious sins. In addition to receiving Holy Communion, encounter our risen Lord through frequent participation in Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction.

Friday Faith Formation UpdateThe year-long study of Church History on Friday mornings is drawing to a close, but we hope to continue Friday Faith Formation activities throughout the summer.

Beginning Friday, May 12, we will revisit the 5 week study "A Biblical Walk Through the Mass" with Dr. Edward Sri. This study has previously been offered at St. Clare, but many choose to take it more than once. Francis Cardinal George of Chicago said of the study: "Edward Sri has written a seminal work that will deepen our way of praying the Mass."

In this study, you will:

• Learn the biblical background to the words, prayers, and gestures of the Liturgy, all in the context of the revised Mass translation

• Discover how the Mass is a “true re-presentation” of Christ’s redeeming sacrifice on the Cross

• Explore the three key aspects of the Mass as a Sacrifice, Real Presence, and Holy Communion

• Gain helpful insights for getting the most out of every Mass...and much more!

The sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Whittier Room.

Cost of the materials is $20, and payable at the 1st session. You will receive a text, workbook, and on-line access to the videos so you can re-watch them from home.

If you are interested, please send an email to [email protected] or call the Parish Office.

Join us in a 5-week “small group retreat” as we journey to draw closer to the heart of Jesus, through the heart of Mary, Blessed Mother. We will share our reflections, view a 30 minute video, and follow with discussion and questions.
