Message from the Chairman of the Board

The seed for tonight’s concert was planted back in 1999 when our predecessors in World Voices had an opportunity to briefly work with Dr. Joshua Jacobson in a concert at Beth El synagogue. We were so inspired by Josh, his music and his stories behind the music, that we decided a more extended project would be a priority for Singers in Accord.

Fourteen years later, we present “Chorál Judáica”, a celebration of Jewish musical traditions. This project is not just a concert but a week of workshops for students at Rockford and Armstrong high schools and Concordia University, choral directors from Minnesota’s American Choral Directors Association, cantors with the Minnesota Cantors Association and students of cantillation.

The Jewish choral musical heritage is not well known in our area outside the synagogue. Yet, it is broad, rich and full of profound texts, captivating rhythms and choral beauty. It is our hope tonight that you will discover this for yourself and seek opportunities to hear more of it.

One place for doing that is by attending concerts of one of our collaborating partners, The Twin Cities Jewish Chorale at their upcoming concert on Sunday June 2nd at Bet Shalom Congregation.

We need to say a special thanks to our preparation conductor, Judy Sagen, who has rehearsed us for many weeks to prepare this concert. She is an extraordinary conductor and musician in her own right, and she has been the perfect partner for this project.

The mission of Singers in Accord is to enrich lives and build community through the power of choral music. The SIA community has expanded in this project as we have made many new friends and partners. We are most grateful to all of them for their responsiveness and openness to being a part of this project.

Thank you for being here to share this glorious music with us. Throughout history, choral music has expressed the songs of the human spirit in a way that no other art form can.

Mizmorei T’hilim (Tzvi Avni)III. Psalm 150

The word, Hal’luyah, consists of two Hebrew words. Hallel means praise. Yah means God. In six succinct verses, this powerful Psalm, the final Psalm of the book of Psalms, tells us to praise God. A description of where, why and how to praise God follows the initial directive.

In 1967, Tzvi Avni, an Israeli composer, captured the power of this Psalm as the conclusion of his work Mizmorei T’hilim (Psalm Songs).

Adon Olam

Adon Olam, a poetic masterpiece attributed to the 11th century Spanish poet, Solomon Ibn Gabirol, has been part of Ashkenazic prayer services since the 14th century. In five rhyming couplets, this poem presents God as transcendent and immanent, universal and personal.

Salamone Rossi composed this piece, one of nine motets scored for double chorus, in the early 1600s. Rossi is the first composer known to have written choral music for the synagogue.

Kenneth Lampl’s Adon Olam is in a modern style, powerful and compelling.

Charles Davidson offers Adon Olam in a jazz style.

Lord of the universe, who ruled

before anything was created,

at the time when all things were made at His wish,

then was His name proclaimed King.

And after all things shall have come to an end

He alone, the revered one, shall reign,

He was, He is

and He will be, in glory.

He is One, and there is no other

to compare with him, to consort with Him;

without beginning, without end,

to Him belong power and dominion.

He is my God – and my Redeemer liveth –

and a Rock in my suffering on a day of trouble;

He is my banner and my refuge,

the portion of my cup on the day when I call.

Into His hand do I commend my spirit

when I sleep and when I awake,

and with my spirit my body also;

the Lord is with me and I shall not fear.

Hallelujah. Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in the sky, His stronghold.

Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him for His exceeding greatness.

Praise Him with blasts of the horn; praise Him with harp and lyre.

Praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with lute and pipe.

Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with loud-clashing cymbals.

Let all that breathes praise the LORD. Hallelujah.

Music

Page 6: A Celebration of Jewish Musical Traditions · 2017-01-18 · inspired by Josh, his music and his stories behind the music, that we decided a more extended project would be a priority

Five Hebrew Love Songs (Eric Whitacre)

These short poems were written in 1996 by Hila Plitmann, Eric Whitacre’s wife. Whitacre then set these poems to music for solo voice and piano. In 2001, the songs were adapted for SATB chorus. Each poem captures a very personal moment in their lives together. Kala Kalla (Light Bride) is a play on words, homonyms, spelled differently, but sounding alike. The music perfectly captures the mood of each poem.

A PictureA picture is engraved in

my heart:Moving between light and

darkness,A sort of silence envelops

your bodyAnd your hair falls upon

your face just so.

Light BrideLight brideShe is all mine.And lightlyShe will kiss me.

Mostly“Mostly,” said the roof to

the sky,“The distance between you

and me is endlessness;But a while ago two came

up hereAnd between us was left

only one centimeter.”

What Snow!What snow!Like little dreamsFalling from the sky.

TendernessHe was full of tenderness;She was very hard.And as much as she tried to

stay thus,Simply, and with no good

reason,He took her into himself,And set her downIn the softest, softest place.

L’chu N’ran’nah (Shlomo Carlebach)

L’chu N’ran’nah is the first of six psalms that introduce the Shabbat evening service. Set to Carlebach’s enchanting melody, this arrangement captures the joy and enthusiasm of a Carlebach service.

Come, let us sing joyously to the LORD, raise a shout for our rock and deliverer;

let us come into His presence with praise; let us raise a shout for Him in song!

For the LORD is a great God, the great king of all divine beings.

In His hand are the depths of the earth; the peaks of the mountains are His.

His is the sea, He made it; and the land, which His hands fashioned.

Come, let us bow down and kneel, bend the knee before the LORD our maker,

for He is our God, and we are the people He tends, the flock in His care. O, if you would but heed His charge this day:

Do not be stubborn as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah, in the wilderness,

when your fathers put Me to the test, tried Me, though they had seen My deeds.

Forty years I was provoked by that generation; I thought, “They are a senseless people; they would not know My ways.”

Concerning them I swore in anger, “They shall never come to My resting-place!”

Page 7: A Celebration of Jewish Musical Traditions · 2017-01-18 · inspired by Josh, his music and his stories behind the music, that we decided a more extended project would be a priority

Mizmor L’David (Shlomo Carlebach) - Psalm 29

This Psalm depicts the presence of God moving in the world. The music of Shlomo Carlebach enhances and amplifies the powerful words of the Psalm.

A psalm of David. Ascribe to the LORD, O divine beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

Ascribe to the LORD the glory of His name; bow down to the LORD, majestic in holiness.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over the mighty waters.

The voice of the LORD is power; the voice of the LORD is majesty;

the voice of the LORD breaks cedars; the LORD shatters the cedars of Lebanon.

He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion, like a young wild ox.

The voice of the LORD kindles flames of fire;

the voice of the LORD convulses the wilderness; the LORD convulses the wilderness of Kadesh;

the voice of the LORD causes hinds to calve, and strips forests bare; while in His temple all say “Glory!”

The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood; the LORD sits enthroned, king forever.

May the LORD grant strength to His people; may the LORD bestow on His people wellbeing.

Shedemati (Yedidyah Admon)

Composed before the establishment of the State of Israel, Shedemati reflects the modes and rhythms of the indigenous Middle Eastern music combined with the Russian roots of Admon. The Zionist ideal of connection with the soil is reflected in the words of this beautiful poem.

A Song of David. My field.At dawn I sowed with tears.The farmer’s prayer is heard.

My field,Drenched in dew,Drunk with sunlight,Bows her stalks before the harvester.Swiftly, with a grand sweep, the sickleIs waved on high.

Dance the Horah! (Joshua Jacobson)

These two songs are forms of the horah, a type of folk dance, brought to Israel from Rumania about one hundred years ago. The horah, a circle dance associated with Israel, actually originated in Eastern Europe.

Hey Harmonika (Alkony)

We shall always rememberthe horah that we dancedtogether in the Galilee.

Hey, accordion, play for me-so every note will vibrate-the horah that we danced together in the Galilee.

Mayim, Mayim (Emanuel Amiran)

This song is built on the Biblical verse, Isaiah 12:3. It is at once ancient and contemporary, having special meaning to the Jews who returned to the ancient Land of Israel, once again making the desert come alive.

Therefore with joy shall you draw water from the wells of salvation.

Sim Shalom (Max Janowski)

After fleeing Nazi Germany, Max Janowski (1912-1991) began writing a new unique type of Jewish choral music, influenced by the cantorial chant, filled with rich harmonies. His choral work is popular, the melodies having become part of the worship service in a simplified form.

Grant peace, goodness, and blessing,Favor, kindness and compassionUpon us and upon all who are in awe

of You. Bless us, our Father, all of us as oneWith the light of Your countenance.For by the light of Your countenance,O LORD, our God, You gave us a teaching of life and love of kindness,Righteousness, blessing,Compassion, life, and peace.

And may it be good in Your sightTo bless Your people Israel,And all people,At all times and at every momentWith Your peace. Blessed are You, O LORD,the Creator of peace.

And the Angels Sing, Johnny Mercer & Ziggy Elman (arr. Jacobson & Bailey)

And the Angels Sing is an adaptation of a wedding dance, “Der Shtiler Bulgar.” Ziggy Elman slowed the tempo, adding a swing rhythm and jazz harmonies. Johnny Mercer provided the lyrics.

We meet and the angels sing,

The angels sing the sweetest song I ever heard.

You speak and the angels sing,

Or am I reading music into every word?

Suddenly, the setting is strange

I can see water and moonlight beaming,

Silver waves that break on some undiscovered shore.

Then suddenly I see it all change,

Long winter nights with the candles gleaming,

Through it all your face that I adore.

You smile and the angels sing,

And though it’s just a gentle murmur at the start,

We kiss and the angels sing,

And leave their music ringing in my heart.

The angels sing!

The TCJC was founded in the Fall of 2009 with the goal of becoming an artistically excellent, multigenerational community concert choir. Our mission is to perform the full range of Jewish music while providing outreach and education. More specifically, the TCJC aims to perform ancient and modern repertoire, liturgical and secular pieces, rarely performed works, and new compositions in a variety of languages, including Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, English, and others. We also look forward to collaborating with other choirs. We are excited to provide outreach and education by bringing to light the often unexplored Jewish musical repertoire and sharing these works with the community at large. Cliff Digre MemorialIn November, Singers in Accord lost a very special member of its extended family, Cliff Digre. Cliff was a stalwart presence at almost every concert, lighting up the front row and inspiring the performers with his infectious smile full of pride and appreciation. He invested generously in Singers in Accord, not only because his son is a part of the ensemble, but because he too believed in the transformational power of music to uplift the soul – even in times of great personal challenges. Cliff’s family gifted Singers in Accord with a memorial on his behalf, specifically to ensure that this wonderful and culturally important collaboration with Josh Jacobson would come to fruition in our community. So as we experience the power and mystique of this captivating music together, we dedicate these performances to the Digre family with grateful hearts, in honor and celebration of Cliff’s legacy and the inspiration he leaves with all who were touched by his generous spirit.
