A Celebration of Life for
January 23, 1956 - April 21, 2020
Congregational Hymn
Blessed Assurance
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Refrain: This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long. This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending, bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Refrain
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest; Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
Refrain
Obituary
Lawrence Anthony Onley, Jr., was born on January 23, 1956, in Washington, D.C., to the late Lawrence Anthony Onley, Sr. and Delores Y. Onley. On Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Lawrence was called home to heaven. Lawrence, affectionately known as “Bucky,” attended Ballou High School in the District. After graduating high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He later married LaVon Price Onley and the two shared the joy of raising three children: Trenita, Denise, and Lawrence A. Onley, III. Earlier in his career, Lawrence worked for the U.S. Postal Service. He went on to become a Special Police Officer at the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms for 19 years. He also worked at the Naval Support Activity in Washington, D.C., achieving the rank of corporal. On September 20, 1992, Lawrence accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and joined From the Heart Church Ministries®. He loved his church and the teaching ministry of the late Founding Pastor, Dr. John A. Cherry and Bishop John A. Cherry, II. Lawrence was an avid football fan whose favorite team was the Washington Redskins. His other pastimes included traveling and dancing. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling--whether it was a short trip or a long one, the distance didn’t matter as long as he was with his family. Additionally, Bucky loved to dance; one could say he was a pro on the dance floor. He was best known for his incredible two-step shimmy! Lawrence was a kind, caring, empathetic man who wholeheartedly loved everyone. His love was reflected through the big warm smile he gave when he looked at you. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
