The Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society acknowledges

and Adjudication Scheme by First Active.
On behalf of the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society it is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you to our ‘Jubilee Year’ springtime concert here at the National Concert Hall - a concert which we have entitled Celebration! A Century o f Song.
Certainly the last one hundred years has been a Century of Song - popular songs - which we in the R & R love to sing - songs that have come from the great musical shows of the 20th century.
These popular tunes came firstly from the operettas at the turn of the century, later to be known as ‘Light Operas’. Early in the 20th century light operas evolved into ‘Musical Comedies’ and then into ‘Musicals’ as the shows are known today.
For this evening’s concert we have endeavoured to select songs from shows extending across each decade of the last century. For instance the ever-popular ‘Vilia’ comes from the operetta The Merry Widow which was first staged in the year 1905 while the poignant song ‘Bring Him Home’ can be heard in the musical Les Mis&ables, which had its West End premiere at the end of the century.
We hope we have included many of your favourite songs in this concert.
