Notes From the Director

I, myself, got a BB gun one Christmas. I didn’t shoot my eye out but did manage to shoot my Aunt Reta’s right hand when she walked out the back door at just the wrong moment. My poor aim led to a welt on her finger and ended my cowboy and wild west adventures. What were my parents thinking? I could have shot my Aunt’s eye out!

A BB gun, a Tickle-me-Elmo, the latest video game—I think every kid has a dreampresent they want for Christmas. Perhaps this is one of the reasons A Christmas Story has struck such a chord with so many people over the years.

Most of us know A Christmas Story from the Peter Billingsley movie, and it certainly has become an American classic, but before the movie, there were the depression-era stories of Jean Shepherd which he first began telling on his radio show in New York and later live at colleges around the country. He even played a sold out performance at Carnegie Hall. Jean Shepherd, known as Shep, wove these stories from his own growing up in Hammond Indiana, which is why they seem so heartfelt. Later these warm and humorous stories were collected in a book entitled “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.”

In 1983, Shepherd’s stories were adapted into the film A Christmas Story with Shepherd himself providing the voice of the grown up Ralphie. Initially the movie received mixed reviews and enjoyed only a very limited success. It would take television to make Ralphie a star. A Christmas Story first aired on TV on HBO in 1985 and in subsequent years would reappear around Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. The movie grew in popularity year after year—so popular that in 1999 TNT began its annual 24 hour A Christmas Story marathon, a marathon that continues to this day.

This dramatic comedy stage version of A Christmas Story, first appeared in 2000 and we are proud to be able to bring this live action version of Ralphie and his friends to the Dock Street Theatre for the very first time. A new musical version is set to make its debut on Broadway this holiday season, as well. Ralphie has certainly proven to be a charmer, and I triple-dog-dare ya not to fall under Ralphie’s spell once more.

And if you’re very lucky, perhaps Santa will bring you an official Red Ryder 200 Shot carbine action range model air rifle with a compass and this thing that tells time built right into the stock! But be careful, you don’t want you to shoot your eye out.

Dock Street Theatre • America’s First Theatre

The Historic Dock Street Theatre, America’s first theatre, was the first building in America built exclusively to be used for theatrical performances. Originally constructed in 1736 on the corner of Church Street and Dock Street (now Queen Street), the original Dock Street Theatre was probably destroyed by the Great Fire of 1740.

In 1809, the elegant Planter’s Hotel was built on this site. After the Civil War, the Planter’s Hotel fell into disrepair and was slated for demolition. But in

1935, after Milton Pearlstine made the property available to the City of Charleston and at the urging of the mayor and other prominent citizens, the building was selected for a Depression Era WPA (Works Progress Administration) project. At that time, a new performance space modeled on 18th century London playhouses was constructed within the shell of the old Planters Hotel, the hotel’s lobby serving as the lobby of the new theatre. After being closed for two centuries, the Historic Dock Street Theatre re-opened in 1937 and quickly became the centerpiece of the Charleston arts scene. In 2010 following a three year $19 million dollar renovation by the City of Charleston, the Historic Dock Street Theatre once again re-opened to reclaim its place as the jewel in Charleston’s artistic crown. Today the Historic Dock Street Theatre hosts some of Charleston’s finest performing arts organizations, including Spoleto Festival USA.

Charleston Stage, which became the resident professional theatre at the Dock Street Theatre in 1978, produces over 120 performances here. Each season Charleston Stage plays to an audience of more than 42,000 patrons, including more than 20,000 South Carolina students who enjoy special school day performances throughout the year.
