FMA Informative: Greetings Master Isidro, thank you for consenting to answer a few ques-tions about yourself and your art of Arkido. Master Isidro: Very welcome and thank you for your time.FMA Informative: To bring a little understanding to your back-ground, where were you born? And when was it you came to the United States? Master Isidro: I was born in Ma-nila, Philippines and came to the United States in 1970FMA Informative: You have stated quite often that while grow-ing up you were a former Filipino gang member in San Francisco, and a former street fighter, and this most likely because of the atmosphere in which you grew up in. What we would like to know is what progressed you to change and enter into the martial arts?

Master Isidro: The martial arts was always part of my life since I was around 5 years old. In the 1970’s, the influence was as others of the Bruce Lee films and also as a dependent of US Military (Dad was in US Navy in Pensacola, Florida). I attended a weekly class in Martial Arts where they taught Karate and the Filipino martial arts. What made me change to become straight in the narrow path out of all things I was into, was when my younger brother died in the mid 80s for commit-ting a crime in San Francisco. His name was Daniel Isidro and I will always remember him as my younger brother of 16 years old to me. FMA Informative: About Arkido, let us begin with, when did you commence your training in the martial arts? And where was it? Master Isidro: I started martial

arts in 1970, at the US Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.FMA Informative: As understood Arkido is a combination of Hap-kido and Modern Arnis. Could you first tell us what the concepts of Hapkido are? Master Isidro: Hapkido means ‘’The flow of Energy’’ much like the Filipino martial arts. Hapkido is primarily used for Self Defense techniques. The concepts are that Hapkido has 2 technical styles in reality. It has the soft style of the Japanese style of Aikido, Jiu Jits Su, and Judo. Which we all know how to roll, fall, cartwheel, throw, pressure point/vital area, and breaking. The hard style is the Tae Kwon Do version, where you train on how to do all the kicks of Tae Kwon Do such as the spinning kick, jump around spin kick, fly-ing side and double kick, jumping kicks, and also includes breaking

echniques. FMA Informative: Could you tell us the concepts of Modern Arnis as you understand it? Master Isidro: The concepts of Modern Arnis is always evolv-ing and always flowing. It means that you are always continuously adding techniques and improvising them. Improving the techniques from time to time. Going with the flow of time. The footwork and the tech-niques are always flowing such as Tapi Tapi (Classical) and Visadario (Current). There are classical tech-niques of Modern Arnis where you should always know the basic foundation of the strikes, blocking, v leg switching, etc. And the cur-rent one such as Visadario and my own- Arkido. Modern Arnis also em-braces other martial arts that you have learned. It is the “Art within the Art”. My Korean martial arts blended into the Filipino martial arts.FMA Informative: Now, with the combination of Hapkido and Modern Arnis what have you taken from each art to create Arkido? Master Isidro: The techniques of Hapkido and Arnis (Modern Arnis) which combine the locking, throw-ing, breaking, kicks, and empty hand techniques that created this style. FMA Informative: In bring together Hapkido and Arnis what would you believe are the most im-portant philosophies and concepts that when combined make Isidro Modern Arnis a art that standing out from other martial arts? Master Isidro: The most important philosophies and concepts of the Isidro Modern Arnis art that stands

out from other martial arts are:1. We are taught loyalty, dedi-cation, hard work, and always respect. 2. We are taught Street Defense right away on guns, knife, gang attack right away rather than when you are higher belt or older age. Simple and Practical. You learn first day you join. 3. We are all around in Modern Arnis. We know both classical (Sinawali, Tapi Tapi, Espada Y Daga, Redondo, Sumbrada, V leg switching, footwork, etc.) and the latest techniques and style of Modern Arnis (Visadario and Arkido). We are the only school that do both Empty and Solo Baston Anyo. The Solo Baston Anyo is only taught and used primarly in school and colleges in the Philippines. The Empty hand Anyo is only taught in the USA, rarely done in school since the passing of Prof. Remy Presas. 4. The Arkido- Where we teach how to break and blend in the techniques of Hapkido.

FMA Informative: It is under-stood that you offer different semi-nars and classes what are they? Master Isidro: I offer different seminar for 3 core reasons:

1. Expose and show how Fili-pino martial arts is very practi-cal and you do not have to be in great shape or any kind of men-tal state to do the techniques. 2. To share, promote, and propa-gate the Filipino martial arts and Culture as a Filipino 3. To promote myself, my school, Modern Arnis, and to the Presas Family Respect.

I teach to the elderly, and at clubs, and any age, race, creed who are open minded. In each

seminar it is special. There are cer-tain limitation of age and ability to teach those unique seminar on their ability of physical movement and mentally that you need to account for.FMA Informative: It is also noted that for practitioners that may not be able to study with you person-ally you offer classes through the internet. Could you explain how this is done and how people could obtain these classes? Master Isidro: I offer this program because there was a lot of feedback that I got at my Facebook page of learning the Filipino martial arts and there were none, or it was lim-ited, or the quality of the instruc-tors. Or because individuals liked the style and techniques of what I have been teaching. This is to help those interested and to promote the Filipino martial arts. I offer internet classes or certification programs in Isidro Modern Arnis through joining my Facebook group of Isidro Modern Arnis. They have to show an open mindedness and apply for the pro-gram. They are also given a cur-riculum. Where each student is given a curriculum within those levels to learn the techniques and Anyo’s in a certain designated time span. They would watch all the techniques that are on the Face-book page to learn and follow the pattern. If any question, they would contact me. During their test day, I would see their video or SKYPe .Anyone interested: Can contact me directly via Facebook ( Click Here ) or Email: [email protected]
