Beth Hillel Synagogue is a member of the Unit-ed Synagogue of Conservative Judaism

Beth Hillel is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue rooted in the ancient traditions of the Torah while growing to meet the changes and challenges of our world. Its core are the many people of different ages and backgrounds who have chosen to make it their spiritual home, joining together for prayer, learning, and celebration. The many branches of Beth Hillel’s community provide support to its congregants, reaching out to each other and welcoming our neighbors as together we learn from the past and teach for the future.

THE BETH HILLEL SYNAGOGUE INTERFAITH CEMETERY

The need for an interfaith cemetery is an increasingly recognized facet of contemporary Jewish life. I am very happy that our Cemetery Committee has unanimously voted to recommend to the congregation the establishment of this cemetery, both to serve Beth Hillel members and to demonstrate our sincere outreach to the larger community. A number of tasks need to be completed to make this project a reality, but the process is beginning. You will be hearing more about this at the annual meeting. Let me give you some background on this question…..

The need for such a cemetery is reflected in both discussions within the general community and in a series of Teshuvot (legal rulings) by the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Conservative Movement. The most recent Teshuvah was issued in 2010, entitled, “Burial of a Non-Jewish Spouse and Children”. The questions asked in the teshuvah are: May a non-Jewish spouse or children of an interfaith marriage be buried in a separate section of a Jewish Cemetery? If so, what kind of ceremony should it be, and who should officiate at the ceremony?

After going through the traditions and legal discussions of burial throughout the centuries (ask me if you’d like a copy), the teshuvah concludes and gives the

following summary of the situation before going to its halachic rulings: “a thousand year custom should be respected and not lightly discarded. Nevertheless, we live in different times. Our relations to non-Jews are very different than in the past. Many of us have non-Jews in our families. All of us know non-Jews who are strongly connected to the Jewish community although they have chosen not to convert and retain their status as non-Jews. In regard to the question of interfaith marriages, we must be sensitive to their feelings and make them feel welcome in our communities. In addition, non-Jewish spouses and children who are involved in our synagogues, while not Jewish, are nevertheless part of our community. Our tradition has continually evolved in our understanding and differentiation of non-Jews. We must respect those who have married Jews and have raised Jewish families and are connected to the Jewish community….”It concludes: “We must be sensitive to the commitments that were made with those who have already been buried under the assumption that only Jews would be buried with them. Hence we recommend the creation of ‘mixed burial’ sections in Jewish cemeteries, where non-Jewish spouses and children may be buried alongside Jews.” I am most proud of our cemetery committee for voting to take this important step forward… and look forward to working with the committee in making it a reality.

Rabbi Gary Atkins Your Rabbi

From Rabbi Atkins’ Desk Help Needed for Shabbat Under the Stars!!!!!

1. As you know, July 12th is the First Shabbat under the stars. The Rabbi wanted me to combine the Fish Fest with the Bar B Q so I have planned an extensive menu. We are inviting the other Beth Hillel (Temple Beth Hillel from South Windsor) to join us. They are a wonderful bunch of folks and participated in a large turnout for our Brotherhood speaker. (Dr Wayne Carver) Therefore, I expect that they will want to come to this event in large numbers. The bottom line is that we will need LOTS of volunteers.

2. I need people to help with the prep work. (Chopping, pealing, mixing, parboiling, cutting into grilling sized pieces as well as actually do the grilling, serving, getting the tables set up with plates, cups, cutlery, ice, soda, napkins, condiments, and bowls of food and serving stations. As you can see I will need an army of helpers.

3. The week before the event I will need people to help make the hamburgers, cut up the chicken into portion sizes, start the marinade, prepare the cran-berry topping for the salmon, cut up the cabbage for the coleslaw, cut the fruit for dessert (watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe and honeydew) I NEED HELP!!

Who will step forward and which days or late after-noons into early evenings can I count on you? Please contact your friends and ask them to join you. Either contact the office or email me back ([email protected]) and let me know who you are and when you can be there to help. Thank you, Mark Goldberg

כל ישראל ערבים זה לזה “We are Family”

HAVE A SAY IN OUR

FUTURE!!

My wife and I are very active with the International Association of Lions Clubs. The symbol of the Lions is an emblem with Lions’ heads on either side, one looking to the left and one to the right. The symbolism is that Lions look to the past to see where they’ve been and to appreciate what they have accomplished. They look to the future to see what may be accomplished in the future.

Tradition is very strong in our faith. Indeed, faith is very strong in our faith. The congregation has voted strongly to look to the future. Carrying on our traditions and having faith in our Rabbi, the Board of Directors and the Officers is important. But, our synagogue will not be successful without some involvement from each and every one of our members. That doesn’t mean that everyone has to come to minyon or participate in everything. It does mean that your voice must be heard in determining the future of our synagogue family. This conversation will start immediately and will be the only major item on the agenda for the Board of Directors meeting on June 4. Before that, the Congregation will have met on May 30. I am going to put a discussion of our future on that agenda also. Your Board of Directors will discuss what they hear on May 30. We are on our way. What path do we travel? Do we remain independent? Do we merge with someone else? Do we sell the building? Do we buy another building? Do we sell the building and rent back part of the building? How do we rent part of the building? Do we start programs in the Farmington Valley or Granby and East Granby with a view to moving some day? Which of the above or other ideas are our priorities and in what order.

What will you do to help? Will you speak up? Will you write your feelings? Will you help make the gift shop a reality? Will you buy or sell one coupon scrip for area businesses? Will you write one article for the Bulletin? Will you get one business to advertise in the Bulletin? Will you organize one activity at the synagogue? Will you talk to one person about joining? It all starts with one person doing one thing.

In the words of someone who accomplished a few things, “I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough, we must do.” Leonardo da Vinci

It has been my honor to have served as your President over the past two years, through good times and difficult times. I only wish the situation had been such that I would have been able to address the issues that now have to be decided. I do believe that Beth Hillel can find an option to be able to support itself. This simply required incredibly dedicated volunteers, planning and thinking out of the box. This was demonstrated with the financially successful 60th Anniversary celebration and the Joseph Lieberman Testimonial. So, the question of any other possible merger should be discussed in that light. I will try my best to support the new officers and Board and hope that past presidents who have not been active will do so also. I apologize for not asking more of them who had not been recently active.

See you around the synagogue!

My Friends:

We recently made an important decision to stay in our beloved Synagogue. Members came to the meeting to vote knowing that we are facing difficult times ahead in order to keep afloat. We are dealing with a deficit budget. But if we all pitch in and do our parts we can achieve what you voted for so overwhelmingly. The Board of Directors is working diligently to help make that happen.

There is one easy way to put your $$$ to work. We all have to eat! We have been remiss in our fundraising—but we CAN change that. If we each pledge to use FOOD COUPONS at one of the following---Crown, Geisslers, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop—Beth Hillel will earn a per-centage and we can add to the budget, and reduce our deficit. Smaller congregations than ours have made thousands using SCRIP. I have been witness to their testimonies at Wom-ens League and United Synagogue meetings.

Now I want to put my faith in each family here at Beth Hillel to put aside your past habits and use SCRIP at participating markets. I am will-ing to spearhead this campaign but I need your help. Our fiscal year ends in June Let’s show the community WE CAN DO IT.

Sincerely, Shirley Morrison

ADULT EDUCATION

Adult Ed will resume with plans for the Fall and are ask-ing for topics of interest from all our congregants. We already have a few leads to follow after the High Holidays. We aim to please. We have learned a great deal from the short (1hr) se-ries that Rabbi Gary does on Monday evenings each season. There is no fee and we urge you to attend, whatever the topic. You won't be disappointed, guaran-teed.

Have a healthy, safe summer.

Call Myrna Schaffman or Tobie Katz at any time.

Many thanks to all who donated to the Abe Morrison SHABBAT Dinner Fund in Abe’s memory. It was a very special evening, made so by the love that went into it. Our Kitchen crew gets better and better and I love them one and all. Shirley Morrison

I KNOW YOU HAVE HEARD THIS SONG BEFORE, BUT LISTEN TO IT ONE MORE TIME.

THIS IS A REQUEST FOR EVERYONE TO JOIN THE MINYANAIRES. Why? Because we need you to do two things…. isn’t it nice to be needed? Thing ONE: • You know when you come for a Yahrzeit you expect there to be a minyan. • However, if YOU don’t come to any services then when it is YOUR turn to have a Yahrzeit you shouldn’t expect there to be a minyan. • So the first thing we are requesting of you is to attend services. • Is ONE service, other than Shabbat, a MONTH asking too much? Make it a habit. You pick the morning or evening and stick to it. Would it be so bad if you picked one morning AND one evening service a MONTH? WE NEED YOU! • We still serve GOURMET breakfasts on Friday mornings. Thing TWO: The MINYANAIRES are called upon to contribute towards synagogue activities through-out the year. As examples… • We repaired and polished the beautiful silver torah ornaments. • We donate funds for expenses in connection with travel for our High Holiday cantor. • We also financially support the music for the Shabbat under the Stars. YOU VOTED FOR US TO STAY HERE AND BE A VIABLE CONGREGATION! IT IS NOW TIME FOR YOU TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE! WE NEED EVERY MEMBER OF THIS CONGREGATION TO BECOME A MINYANAIRE! ANNUAL DUES ONLY $18. MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO “BETH HILLEL MINYANAIRES” Please mail them to the synagogue office…. 160 Wintonbury Ave. Bloomfield, CT 06002

BROTHERHOOD

CALLING ALL MEN – WE NEED YOU TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE

You voted to keep our synagogue alive and active.

We want to have lots of programs

We want to have lots of fun meetings with speakers

We want to have great breakfasts

We want to make a financial contribution to the synagogue.

EVERY GUY SHOULD BE A MEMBER.

$18 bucks a year, that’s all it takes.

Make the check payable to: “Beth Hillel Brotherhood”

Mail it to the synagogue: 160 Wintonbury Ave. Bloomfield CT. 06002

Remember EVERY MALE should be a member. The CHESED CARING COMMITTEE continues to provide acts of lovingkindness to the congre-gants of Beth Hillel Synagogue. For congregants who are ill, hospitalized, undergoing rehab, or otherwise in need of prayers and well wishes, our committee members are very generous with their time. We send cards of encouragement; we visit people in hospitals or their homes, re-hab, or nursing home facilities; we call to let them know that they are in our thoughts and our prayers. On occasion, we provide meals (I am told that chicken soup has been especially restorative!) and an occasional ride. We have challot and small bottles of grape juice to share just before Shabbat. When we offer a chamsa/dove as a "good luck charm" - we see faces light up. We, in return, are blessed by the knowledge that we are providing comfort to those most in need. Cards of gratitude that WE receive, in return, are most heart-warming. We can only provide our services if/when we are aware of the need. Should a congregant (or their family) decline our services, the re-quest is, of course, honored. If you or a loved one wish to be on the receiving end of our ser-vices, you may call me (Iris) directly (860-726-9312) or leave a message at the syna-gogue office. Iris E. Atkins and Joel Neuwirth Co-chairs, Chesed Caring Committee
