A museumfor every taste

There are no less than 41 museums in Le Loiret, including 9 which feature the label “Musée de France” or ”Museum of France” granted by the Minister of Culture. These include the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum) of Orléans and the Musée de la Marine de Loire (Loire Naval Museum) in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire.

Others, such as the Musée des Émaux (Enamels Museum) in Briare or the Musée de la Faïencerie (Earthenware Museum) in Gien, feature the expertise of the craftsmen who shaped this region. The Museum of the Résistance in Lorris retraces part of the history of WWII. Some are more surprising, such as the Musée du Cirque et de l’Illusion (Circus and Magic Museum) in Dampierre- en-Burly, featuring a fun, interactive scenography.

Museums,Places of cultural interest...

Fragrancesand flavoursCome taste all the gourmet specialities which have given Le Loiret its well-deserved renown. Sweet and savoury delights include the Jargeau andouille (chitterling sausage), Orléans vinegars and mustard, Gâtinais saffron and honey, Olivet pears, almond pithiviers (puff pastry with almond paste) and Montargis pralines... And of course the mouthwate-ring pastry called the “Loiret Gourmand”! The AOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) wines of Coteaux- du-Giennois and Orléans-Clery, together with the beers of Le Loiret, are also deserving of this excellent reputation. And have you tried the Cotignac d’Orléans? If you like quinces, you’ll love this fine fruit jelly.

You’ll find all these delicious products on market stalls and in fine restaurants of thearea.

Windmills, Archaeological sites...

Expertise and traditionsExpertise to explore, traditions and local customs to discover... This is the very essence of Le Loiret. To better understand the artof its craftsmen and old-fashioned trades, feel free to visit the historic museums such as Musée de la Tonnellerie (Cooperage Museum) in Chécy, Musée du Verre (Glass Museum) in Dordives, Musée des Tanneurs (Tannery Museum) in Montargis and Musée de l’Art Rural (Rural Art Museum) in Tigy, to name a few.

Other sightsOn a smaller historical scale, Le Loiret reveals a more intimate, unusual heritage. As you wander through the area, you’ll discover mills, locks, dovecots and various archaeological sites.

Don’t miss the Briare bridge canal. At 662 m / 2171 ft long, this is one of the most prestigious sites of river heritage in all of France. The Eiffel company designed its structure. You’ll also enjoy the former lock and boat terminal of Mantelot in Châtillon-sur-Loire.

The canals of Loing and Briare and the lateral channels of the Loire and Orléans are now devoted to riverside touring and are an excellent way to discover one of the many facets of Le Loiret.

Urban treasuresInspiring cities, historic cities, living cities : the cities and towns of Le Loiret offer escapades to savour in every season. The historic district of Orléans, “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire“ (“City of Art and History“), will reveal to you its Renaissance façades, prestigious residences, art collections and ornamental gardens with their lavish blooms. Joan of Arc is still fondly remembered here through the built heritage and celebrated every year throughout the city.

You’ll discover other atmospheres in Montargis, the “Venise of the Gâtinais“ with its network of small waterways ; Gien, land of earthenware ; Beaugency, an important stopover in the Loire Valley, with its lovely medieval lanes ; Pithiviers, a gourmet’s paradise ; and Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, where the great era of bargemen is still honoured.

Also not to be missed, La Ferté-Saint-Aubin in Sologne and Lorris, a charming town steeped in history.

Châteaux, Fortresses...

Royal residencesThe medieval fortress overlooking the Loire River was restored by Sully, minister under Henry IV. Each year it hosts the well-known International Festival of Music of Sully and Le Loiret. The family castle of La Bussière is also known as the “fisherman’s castle“ as it displays a collection of fishing objects and equipment.

Chamerolles is the work of Lancelot Dulac ; it invites visitors to a “promenade of perfumes“. Yèvre-le-Châtel was transformed into a true royal castellany by Louis VI called the Fat.

Each of these gems has its own character and its own majestic history to reveal.

They are all open to visits and fully furnished. In addition to tours, entertainment and activities are sometimes held within their walls, such as at La Ferté-Saint-Aubin where you’ll be received with congeniality and invited into the old kitchens for a taste of madeleines.

Don’t miss a trip to Meung-sur-Loire ; its castle is the largest in all of Le Loiret and one of the oldest in the Loire Valley. This concentration of medieval architec-tural features built during the Classical period was the residence of the Bishops of Orleans and also used as a prison.

After 11 years of closure, Beaugency castle opens its doors once again! A superb example of seigneurial lodgings, the castle unearths relics from the past and presents you with the dwelling of its first owner, Jean de Dunois - known as the “Bastard of Orléans“ and Joan of Arc’s partner.

Every year, some of these castles offer activities to helpyou discover our enchanting heritage.

This 35-ha / 86- acre park is a real treasure, offering a festival of colours and scents as the seasons pass.

The Arboretum des Barres in Nogent-sur-Vernisson and Les Grandes Bruyères of Ingrannes, which have both received the label “Jardins Remarquables“ or “Remarkable Gardens“ from the Ministry of Culture, feature collections that are rare on the European continent. Such is also the case for the vegetable garden of old-fashioned plants on the grounds of Château de La Bussière and the Jardins du Grand Courtoiseau at Triguères.

Celebrating Joan of Arc The headstrong Joan of Arc liberated Orléans from the English in 1429, and each year this victory is commemorated. The event includes a medieval market and parades, but the best-loved moment is the “burning“ of the cathedral towers. 29 April to 8 May.
