I would encourage students to stay apprised of their grades, as the semester grades appear on all official transcripts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Petty Officer 1 st Class, Peter Villanueva for his willingness to come speak to our students at the Veteran’s Day Assembly. During the assembly the students were also treated to a music video honoring our veterans and recognized local veterans who turned out for the assem- bly. The assembly was organized by Grace Nichols as part of her senior project. Athletically we are now transitioning from our fall sports to our winter sports. Our football team concluded their season with a tough loss to Hosanna Christian in Klamath Falls. Once again, the co-op with Jordan Valley worked very well as the two groups meshed quite nicely under some very fine coaching. Winter contests for middle school have already begun, and the high school teams will begin competition this week. I had the pleasure of attending the Treasure Valley Honor Meet at Northwest Nazarene University a couple of weeks ago. Several of our students performed in both the choir and the band. Alyssa Dudley, Donovan Faulconer and Illana Bowen sang in the choir which includes students from Boise Schools to Malheur County Schools. Illana Bowen was one of three students in the choir to be highlighted. Marcelino Beltran was our lone band member to perform, and he did so as the third chair trumpet, which is quite the honor. The week of November 4 th through the 9 th was quite a week for our students. Our leadership students attended the annual Oregon Association of Student Councils Conference in Seaside, Oregon. On Sunday and Monday the 20 students were treated to great keynote speakers and valuable workshops, while a few of the students conducted their own work session for students around the state. On Wednesday evening, we took about 30 high school students to the Treasure Valley Leader’s Summit at TVCC where the students had the opportunity to visit with community groups and youth and family organizations in Malheur County before getting to hear from the guest speakers for the evening. Patrick Gray and Justin Skeesuck, authors of the book, I’ll Push You: A Journey of 500 Miles, Two Best Friends, and One Wheelchair, spoke to the audience about their adventure across El Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. The students who attended were both touched and inspired. The week culminated with a 7 th -12 th grade assembly, Measured By Charac- ter presented by Wade White of Denton, Texas. Mr. White spoke to the students about the tragic loss of his son and how that event changed him forever. He spoke to the students about the impact that his son’s life had on those around him and how their lives have that same impact, for good or for bad. He spoke to the students for over 90 minutes and reminded them that when all was said and done, people would remember them by their character. It was a whirlwind week that afforded each student in the high school the opportunity to examine their lives, their choices and their relationships. Kevin Purnell, Superintendent/HS Principal

One of the thoughts I will use this month is: An optimist thinks this is the best possible world. A

pessimist fears this is true.

The Malheur Enterprise gave our fifth grade a compliment by noting that Adrian’s fifth grade class had

the highest percentage of students pass the state mathematics test of the thirteen fifth grade classes in the

county. The 1st through the 5th grade went to the Lion King at 4 Rivers Cultural Center on the 15th of

November. The K-8th grades are planning to have a Family, Incredible Edible Science Night on the 6th of

December (Thursday). The Middle School Girls’ Basketball Team are into their

season. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

November has been a very busy month with the District Job Interview and the Ag Sales CDEs, as well as the Veterinary Science State Contest held in Redmond. In the Job Interview CDE, members participate in an interview for a potential job. They turn in a resume, cover letter, and three letters of recommendation; after getting scored on these, they get arrive in FFA Official Dress and inter-viewed like they would for a position at a future job. Kenzie Sorrell placed 8th in Advanced Job interview. Ag Sales participants give a sales presentation, trying to sell agricultural products. Lizzy Nielson got 4th place in the Beginning Ag Sales contest. Nine members of the Adrian FFA chapter partici-pated in the State Vet Science CDE. Members took a knowledge test, responded to scenario that vets could potentially face, presented, and identified livestock breeds, parasites, and handling tools. They also got scored on proper animal handling and vet practices. It was a very great learning experience and we made many new friends! We had a successful berry sales fundraiser. We have a few extra berries, so if you are interested in seeing what we currently have left, send an e-mail to [email protected]. We will have Berry Sales again in the Spring, so keep your eye out for that. We are excited for our next FFA meeting on December 7th at noon in the Ag Room. We will be having a White Elephant Gift Exchange and an Ugly Sweater Contest, so wear our best sweater and bring any wrapped gift valued at $10 or less. Thank you for supporting the Adrian FFA Chapter, and have a great holiday season! Claire Wagster

Adrian School District #61 Adrian, OR 97901

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

October 11, 2018 The Board of Directors of Adrian School District #61, Malheur County, met on the 11th day of October, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. in the Adrian School Library. Members present were: Ryan Martin, Eddie Kinkade, and Bobby Davis, and Quinten Shenk. Others present were: Kevin Purnell, Superintendent/High School Principal, Clerk, William Ellsworth, Principal, and Jennifer Nielson, Deputy Clerk/Business Manager.

Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 8:00 p.m. by Board Chairman, Eddie Kinkade. The meeting

was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Adopt Agenda It was proposed to add: 3. New Board Member Oath of Office and 6 b) 457 Plan Option for

Employees to the agenda. Motion was made by Ryan Martin and seconded by Bobby Davis, to adopt the amended agenda. Motion carried unanimously.

New Board Member Oath of Office Quinten Shenk read the Oath of Office provided by Malheur County, and did swear to serve in the office of Director of the Adrian School District #61, Zone #1, as he has been appointed.

Student and Personnel Communications Student Reports/Requests There were none. Staff Reports/Requests Mrs. Gordon asked for permission to attend Girls In Science at EOU in

LaGrande on October 26-27th. 21 girls have registered for the event; they will stay at the Super 8

in LaGrande. They anticipate arriving home in Adrian on Saturday around 7 pm. Motion was and seconded by to approve the GIS trip. Motion carried unanimously. The FFA requested an over-night trip for State FFA Convention in March. Ms. Miller would like to reserve housing and seeks permission for the trip so she can begin planning. Motion was made and seconded to approve the overnight trip. Motion carried unanimously.

Athletic Report There was none. Elementary Principal Report Mr. Ellsworth reported that during Homecoming week, all students K-8

were excited to be included in the activities. Teachers attended county in-service, and have been implementing some strategies learned from training, but already have strategies in place such as rewarding MS for good behavior (“caught ya being good”), and cash prizes for reading (cash prizes provided by the PTO). The girls volleyball team ended the season as 2

nd

place in the WIC. Boys football team had a great win against Wilder 66-16. They showed great sportsmanship in the victory. A parent approached Mr. Ellsworth about sending their child to Adrian because according to the internet, Adrian is ranked #9 statewide for best schools in the state.

Superintendent/High School Principal Report Mr. Purnell reported that he attended a training on what to expect and how to prepare for the AdvancED accreditation audit in March 2019. AdvancED is the largest accreditation firm in the world. This accreditation benefits the district in several ways, including ensuring things are educationally sound, qualifying students for certain scholarships, and meeting international student program requirements. The college board of-fered a “SAT School Day”, and sophomores, juniors, and 12 seniors took the PSAT and SAT this week. Parent Teacher Conference was well attended. Most teachers attended county in-service, in which training for professional development and other diverse training was offered. Mrs. Esplin is scheduled to meet with engineers and the sports booster club to layout the track placement, which will then lead to the football light placement. District volleyball will take place next Saturday. Student Tristan Thomas passed away this month, and funeral services were held at the high school gym. Dennis Daugherty, long time community member and past school board member, passed away this month. His funeral services will take place in the district gym. The district will look at floor covering to protect the gym floor at big events. The OSBA and OSAA meeting point of emphasis will be “coach and crowd control toward officials”. The district can be punished for school official misconduct at sporting events. The state is expecting 8.3 billion

Page 10: A D R I A N S D . C O M D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 8 N E W S L ...adriansd.com/Adrian_School_District/Newsletter/December2018.pdf · Luke Cameron—Excellent Listener & Corene Nunez—

dollars tp fund schools throughout the state of Oregon but will negotiate 9 billion to stay even with pay raises and PERS increase. Mr. Purnell would like to move forward with drug testing students participating in extra-curricular activities. Some inter-district students may be asked to return to their home district due to poor attendance. Because athletic contests and (possibly) FFA events count as an absence, the district works to vary schedules so student absences fluctuate through-out the timeline of the day. Mr. Purnell asked the board for guidelines concerning his attendance at events, and how he should prioritize which events to attend. The board may notify Mr. Purnell in the future if they feel his additional presence is needed. Mr. Gordon will put out a bus bid for a 71 capacity basic route bus. Motion to approve the bus bidding process was made and seconded. Motion passed unanimously.

Financial Report Jennifer Nielson provided a summary of receipts and expenditures, and a balance sheet as of September 30, 2018. Mr. Purnell asked the board what amount of carryover they would like to have, what types of projects they like to accomplish, and what is their vision for the education at Adrian School District.

4) Public Comment There was none. 5) Consent Agenda Motion was made seconded to adopt minutes from the September 13, 2018 regular

board meeting and approve bills. Motion carried unanimously.

6) Action Items a) Winter Coaches This action item has been moved to next month. b) 457 Plan Option for Employees The district has been approached by an employee and asked to

provide a retirement plan option, a deferred 457 compensation plan. Motion to approve was made and seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

7) Information Items

8) Executive Session Executive session as provided by ORS 192.660 was entered at 9:14 p.m. Regular session reconvened at 9:38. 9) Board Comments The flag has been hung in the gym, and was donated by Martin Manufacturing. The district should be careful with facilities; upkeep and take pride in what we have. There was discussion concerning unchaperoned small children in the district gym as games are being played, and the hazards that may occur. Children and students are told not to run around, and the district feels it is not responsible for child care during games. However children and other students are at risk for injury, as well as damage to district property may occur if left unattended. The wresting mats occupy the east side of the mezzanine, and the weight room occupies the west side; is there room for additional patron seating during events? 10) Adjournment Motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried unanimously. The meeting was declared adjourned at 9:56 p.m.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER There will be a open house held on December 4th in Mrs. Brown's room at 7:00 p.m. to help with the following: Seniors and Juniors (and parents) who would like help with the FAFSA, College Applications and Scholar-ships. I am trying to arrange a representative to come in and help with the FAFSA. If I am unable to arrange one I will gather questions and help find information for you. Freshmen to Juniors (and parents) who would like help in planning a high school plan that will help students focus on future goals and after high school opportunities. This will be an informal meeting for Freshmen to Juniors that allows me to learn where I can help students and parents in a planning process. Deidre Brown
