Tempus does really fugit--the pages on the calendarare falling off frantically. Can it really be 2007? Still, there's always time for bridge!

Hopefully everyone who reads this was at ourSandestin Regional having a wonderful time. SinceNW Florida only gets a regional every other year, itwas really special to everyone. Thanks to all whohelped make it such a great success, especially to oursuper efficient chairwomen Virginia Waterfield andCynthia Hall.

Of special note is the number of newer players atthat tournament. The clubs making the special effortto welcome players new to duplicate and/or new tobridge can see results and are to be soundly applaud-ed. Tallahassee has done a super job at this, as hasPensacola which is starting a new round of EasyBridge in just a few weeks.

Each of us must bear the ultimate responsibility, however, to keep bridge vibrant and alive by constant-ly reaching out to less experienced players while wego beyond zero tolerance (the best thing to happen tobridge in years) and focus not just on basic goodmanners, but going on further to focus on gracious-ness --isn't it heartwarming to see how absolutelypleasant most players are becoming?

Now the big events on our calendars are 2 upcom-ing sectionals. First is Panama City, February 16-18.Their hospitality is always great and the beaches in thewinter are spectacularly beautiful. Second is thePensacola sectional on the same dates, differentmonth--- March 16-18. By then spring will havesprung and the weather should be perfection with thesame great Pensacola Junior College playing site andall the extras the Pensacola folks delight us with.Everyone come!!

Looking forward to seeing you smiling at the bridge table,

Spring is in the air and that means our snow birds will bereturning to their summer nests soon. Have a safe trip back.

As I write this, the Orlando Regional just ended. What agreat tournament! We had a total of 2,687 tables, that’s 100more than last year. I would like to thank Jane Formet, ourUnit Tournament Coordinator, and Chris Kindt, theTournament Chairman, for jobs well done. I can’t begin totell you how many players told me what a great job we haddone. I cannot take the credit for it. We had a great team ofworkers, many behind the scenes. Everyone did their joband it certainly showed.

I would also like to thank Martha McGhee, theIntermediate/Newcomer Chairperson. Martha did an out-standing job of providing speakers, trophies and prizes. There was standing room only for some of the lectures. Wekept asking for more chairs. These players were so excitedand they had many happy experiences thanks to Martha. Wehave a page for you to see pictures from their games, someof the overall winners and the speakers.

We are already planning next year’s tournament whichbegins on New Year’s Eve. We are planning a big bash, somake plans now to join us as we bring in the New Yeartogether.

We have provided a ballot in this publication, for theBoard of Directors of Unit 240. We have included a pictureand short biography of each candidate. There is also aspace for write-in votes. We especially need write-ins forSeminole and Osceola Counties. The ballot boxes shouldbe in major clubs in our Unit. You can also vote online atwww.acblunit240.com.

Enjoy the springtime and I’ll see you at the bridge table.

Bridge Club ScheduleOur local clubs have been extreme-

ly busy through the holidays and intothe New Year. The Panama City BridgeClub held their Christmas Party on the15th of December at the local OliveGarden, drawing over fifty players to afine meal and an interesting afternoonof bridge. Bob Newton andArmand Grassi were the overall win-ners. The final Tom Wilson Memorialtournament was held on the 27thNovember and surely brought a smilefrom above as Muriel Wilson teamedwith Louise Johnson for a welldeserved victory.

In Tallahassee, the Christmas Partyat the Senior Center drew 33 tables ofplayers for a great two-session game.Jim Lyle and Judy Bakstran came outon top of the field to earn a spot onthe silver bowl. The TallahasseeDuplicate Bridge Club’s membershiproster has also been growing by leapsand bounds - in 2005 our club had 20new ACBL members, in 2006 we had16 new ACBL members, and to datewe have 16 new club members for2007. Special thanks to Amy Reznik’sEasy Bridge classes for bringing somany new players to the game!

The Pensacola Bridge Center heldits annual Christmas Party atPensacola Junior College. It was atwo session event with 41 tables inattendance. A silent auction was heldwith proceeds to pay for a sound sys-tem for our Center.

We’re also looking for new repre-sentatives to the Unit 219 Board ofDirectors – speak to your currentlocal representatives about how youcan get involved!

I have a short and somewhat impishfriend who comes from Turkey. Hespeaks with just a trace of an accent. “Haarria,” he asked after the weeklyduplicate game, “what did you do onboard sirteen?”

“I am very morose about board thir-teen,” I told him. “Not only did I misde-fend, I took away declarer’s chance togo wrong and go down!”

* Negative I was furious with myself. I had mis-

defended and I was having troublebelieving my own excuses. “Idiot!” Iaddressed myself. My partner hadbothered to overcall one spade and so Ihad led the ace of spades. I had sur-veyed the dummy carefully and theclub suit impressed me. My thinkingwas that my partner’s overcall was notbased on a very good suit. He probablyhad six spades to compensate. Ifindeed he did have six spades, declarercould not have a third spade andtherefore there was no sense in con-tinuing the suit. Additionally, my part-

ner did not overcalla preemptive twospades with his six-card suit, sooo…he must have somehigh cards. The aceand king of dia-monds were goodcandidates. Aha!Those tricks could disappear on thatimposing club suit, if I didn’t shift rightnow. I had thought it all out! With con-fidence, even a bit heroically, I shiftedto a diamond. My partner won his ace, shifted to something and declarermade five hearts. I was seething. I dia-grammed the deal in my dementedmind.

I noted that not only should I haveheld the hand to four, I should havebeaten declarer... If I had cashed theace of spades and continued the suit, declarer would win the king and testtrumps. When he discovered howbadly they behaved, he would realizethat he could only depend on ninetricks if clubs did not break for him. So,he would try to get his tenth trick byleading a diamond before pullingtrumps. Partner would have to beawake and hope right up to the dia-

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – VOTE FOR THREE (3)

Karen AdelmanI would like to be a board member because I would like to get more youngpeople interested in playing bridge. I have played bridge at various clubsthroughout the United States and 90% of the players are over the age of 60.The future of duplicate bridge looks bleak if we do not get more young peopleinvolved in the game. Also, playing bridge teaches many valuable skills - math, logic, sportsmanship, etc.

Jane GarrI started playing bridge a few years ago and am very enthusiastic about thegame. I hope to bring that enthusiasm to the unit if I am elected. I spent 25years teaching nursing in a community college in Rochester, New York, andduring that time was elected President of the Faculty Senate serving two termsin that capacity. Before that, I helped create the Senate structure of governanceand write the bylaws. I am planning to become a certified bridge teacher andam co-chair of our February Sectional Tournament in Vero Beach. I hope thatmy skills would be of use to Unit 240.

Wes TillisMember, Board of Directors, Vero Beach Duplicate Bridge Club for five years,President for three of those years. Aggressively support education efforts toincrease the bridge playing population.

Bingo! “Ishould have beaten this hand!” I wasgnashing as I related the story to myshort and impish friend. “Wad are youtalking about!” cried the Imp! “Youcaan’t beat me... on this hand!” Therewas special emphasis on the word me.“After winning the king of spades Iwould have pulled all your trumpsquweezing rho. “Now I can peetch him in with eithera diamond or a spade and ten tricks aresertain. Right?” “Right!” “And, if yourpartner is asleep at the sweetch, ducksthe first diamond, I will make his ace goaway!” “Oh come now, aren’t you beinga bit arrogant?” I asked him fondly.“Have you been into those funnyberries again? How can you make hisace into a deuce? We have to get ourtwo aces!” “Put you money on thetable, I will put up $50 to your $5.00.”His accent seemed to have disap-peared. Now I may not be quick wittedbut I have a decent memory. I remem-bered a bit of Damon Runyon advicethat suggested that if someone wantedto bet that the jack of diamonds wouldjump out of the deck and squirt butter-milk in your eye... run... even if heoffers great odds. Do not bet againstthe jack of diamonds. I thought about it

a bit too long. I took the bet. What didDamon Runyon know about bridge? The Imp said that he was not doing itfor the money, just to prove that hisarrogance was justified. He quicklyexplained that after the defense duckedone diamond... Let me recap thedefense... Ace of spades and a spade todummy’s king. Ace of trump followedby the Queen of diamonds, which holdsthe trick. The remaining cards wouldbe:

I wiped my eye. The jack of dia-monds had done it again.

Since my last address to you, thenew Board of Directors for Unit 243was installed and is now operatingat full capacity. It is with regret that Ihave to announce that one of ourBoard members, Bob Guida, had toresign due to family issues. Ourthoughts are with him. We have

asked Marge Pecoraro to fill out his remaining term, andshe has graciously accepted.

Our December Sectional was a great success, although our table count was down. The main reason forthis was due to a STaC tournament being held byUnit 128, which drew some of our attendance. We havemade sure that this type of conflict will not happen again.I would also like to thank all the Board members thathelped make the tournament a success. Special thanksgo to Co-Chairs, Marge Pecoraro and Jane Ann Mabryfor an outstanding job in organizing the Sectional. Makeplans to attend this December.

I also have the honor of reporting to you that at the lastDistrict Board meeting, I was elected as Vice-President ofDistrict 9. As you may know, District 9 governs all of theUnits in the state of Florida. I hope that I will be able tomake positive contributions to better bridge in the state.

We are currently working hard on the July 4thTournament at the Hilton Hotel. The schedule will bemuch the same, with the exception that we will be addingan additional Knockout starting on Saturday. Also, instead of a Board A Match, we will offer a one-sessionSwiss game in the evening. In addition, the SundaySwiss teams will again be Strati-flighted, with the A’splaying in a separate division. The dates are July 2through July 8. Please make your plans to attend.

Again, thank you for the confidence you have placed inYOUR Board of Directors and we will see you at thebridge table.
