Melvil Dewey, born in 1851, was reared in upstate New York. An avid simplified speller, Mr. Dewey shortened his own name from Melville to Melvil, dropped his middle names and even shortened his last name for a time to Dui. Working as a student assistant in a college library, Mr. Dewey began his classification system at the age of 21.

Although well known as a librarian and the founder of the American Library Association (ALA), it is for the Dewey Decimal Classification system that Melvil Dewey is best known. His library classification systems is used in most all libraries today.
