Achievement Centers for Children

OUR MISSIONWe empower children and adults with disabilities and their families to

achieve their greatest potential.

OUR VISIONA future where individuals with varying abilities have opportunities across the

lifespan to live life to the fullest. Everyone will reach their highest potential at

home, school, and in the community as a result of the family-focused and

integrated services our staff so competently and passionately provides.

Founded in 1940 as the Society for Crippled Children, we serve children and adults

with a broad range of disabilities and special needs including physical, developmental,

neurological and emotional challenges. Our unique service model weaves together

education and autism services; therapy and the Intensive Therapy Clinic; recreation,

camp and sports programs; adult services, and family support/social work services to

meet the needs of the entire family and provide the best outcomes.

Families come to the

Achievement Centers

for Children seeking services for their children with disabilities,

but they find so much more here. They find a trusted partner that

focuses on their child’s abilities and special strengths, and builds

on them creating successes, increasing momentum, and helping

each individual develop confidence in him or herself.

At the Achievement Centers for Children,

relationships are at the heart of everything we

do. We believe that the family is the root of

success, and we work closely with each family

wherever they are in their journey to develop

their child’s abilities. The family is an integral

and active part of the process, setting goals and measuring

success. The excellent outcomes of the children and adults we

serve come from that trusted partnership with their family and

with our team of professionals focused on unlocking the potential

in each person.

Strong and lasting relationships with our supporters including

donors, volunteers, and staff are what helps us fulfill our mission

to empower children and adults with disabilities and their families

to achieve their greatest potential. We thank you for your

commitment to our mission, and the children, adults and families

we serve.

Sincerely,

Sally Farwell, MEd James Kacic

Hrmena

even-year-old Hrmena

loved his first year as a day

camper at the Achievement

Centers Camp Cheerful this year.

He was born with a genetic

disorder, then diagnosed with

autism recently. At Camp Cheerful,

he can forget about any challenges

he might have and just have fun

in a safe, nurturing environment.

His mother related, “Hrmena was

bored at home. We were happy to

find Camp Cheerful because it

had everything we were looking

for—music, swimming, hiking,

nature walks, and other children to

play with. We found Hrmena loves

to be around horses. The first week

of camp, he was so excited, he

struggled with listening, but by the

end of the week, his listening skills

greatly improved.”

“The counselors at Camp Cheerful

are very special. They know what

they are doing and how to handle

situations calmly. They know how

to take care of the children

completely, from managing

everything they bring to camp

each day, making sure everyone

is safe, to having many activities

for the children to experience

and have fun with each other.

The counselors work very hard,

and I can tell they do it because

they love the campers. We trust

them with our son.”

“When I pick up Hrmena from

camp, he gets into the car and says

“I’m tired, with a big smile on his

face. That’s a good thing,” said

Hrmena’s father, George. “The

counselors give us a report with

details about his day so we can talk

with him about it. We are happy

with everything at Camp

Cheerful.”

“The last day our son, Hrmena, was at camp, the counselors gathered

around him to give him hugs. It was a special day. They were all very

warm and kind—like family.” —Hrmena’s mother, Jaklen

SA trusted partner

Leah was recently introduced to a communications device byher speech therapist where Leah selects buttons so that thedevice can speak for her andexpress her needs and wants. “It’s relieved a lot of frustrationfor Leah to learn how tocommunicate with us.”

“It’s hard, but you should alwayshave hope. You can always findjoy and you will always have love.Don’t count them out becausethese kids are amazingly tough. We’re lucky to have Leah. She’s a delight, very happy, and contentwith life. She’s a blessing toeverybody.”

ere at the AchievementCenters, we’ve had thehonor to watch Leah

Meister grow from a seven-month-old baby to the smiling, happyfive-year-old she is today. Leah wasborn with a severe heart conditionrequiring surgery only 20 hoursafter birth, and suffered a strokeaffecting the left side of her tinybody. Her parents didn’t knowwhat to expect of her future.“There’s a lot of unknowns withthose big diagnoses, and we

didn’t know if Leah was ever goingto walk, communicate, eat on herown, or even play with us andthat’s a lot to deal with,” said hermother Jacki. “I think getting herhere for therapies so early was agame changer for her.”

“We are grateful for her excellentteam of therapists that haveincluded physical, occupational, and speech therapists. Everyonetreats Leah as a little girl—not adiagnosis, and that makes adifference—that’s why we stay.”

“What Leah does now—opening, reaching, and grabbing with herleft hand, she could not do ninemonths ago. Last year at this time, her hand was very tight. Heroccupational therapist, Gabby, knew what steps to take to getLeah where she is today, fromloosening her muscles, thenstretching and strengtheningthem,” explained Jacki.

At the Achievement Centers for Children, generous donations help us

provide programs and services, such as the therapies Leah is receiving,

regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Thank you for your support!

Highlights2019

TRAUMA INFORMED AGENCYIn January 2019, the Achievement Centers

became a Trauma Informed Agency.

Trauma Informed Care is an organizational

structure and treatment framework that

involves understanding, recognizing, and

responding to the effects of ALL types of

trauma. Trauma Informed Care emphasizes

physical, psychological and emotional safety

for both clients and providers, and helps

survivors rebuild a sense of control and

empowerment.

NORTH COAST THERAPY ASSOCIATES, LLC (NCTA)North Coast Therapy Associates is a

subsidiary of the Achievement Centers for

Children and provides outstanding school-

based occupational and physical therapy

services to students in Northeast Ohio.

Therapists partner with educational teams

to reduce the barriers to full student

participation and learning in school. Last year,

NCTA provided nearly 28,000 hours of

occupational and physical therapy to 1,244

students in 56 schools in Northeast Ohio.

a variety of universities in the state of Ohio

and surrounding states. The ACC therapists

who supervised and mentored the students

worked on creating a seamless onboarding

and onsite curriculum for the students, and

the feedback from the students and

university student program coordinators

was exceptional.
