Tax season is flying by! The downtown Klamath County Library and Chiloquin branch library are hosting free tax help from February 7th through April 11th. A Spanish language interpreter will be available at the downtown library to assist taxpayers who primarily speak Spanish. Every Wednesday from 10 am to 5 pm in Chiloquin, specially trained tax aide volunteers from AARP will be on hand to help with your tax preparation needs. You do not have to be a member of AARP (or even a senior citizen) to take advantage of this assistance – taxpayers of any age can drop in. Time with the tax counselors is by walk-in only (it’s best to come early!). Some restrictions may apply; the tax aides may not be able to help with preparing certain types of tax returns. Please bring the following with you to your consultation: last year’s tax return, a photo ID, a list of Social Security numbers for yourself and dependents, and health insurance information for everyone listed on your tax return. (If you purchased health insurance through the Affordable Healthcare Act marketplace, bring the documentation “Form 1095A” you received from the government.) Both you and your spouse need to attend the consultation if you’re filing your taxes jointly. For more information, please call the downtown library at 541-882-8894 or the Chiloquin library at 541-783-3315.

NOAA forecast for this week

Areas of the United States where the average temperature for April-June 2018 is favored to be in the upper (reddish colors) or lower (blue colors) third of the 1981-2010 seasonal temperature record. Within a given area, the intensity of the colors indicates higher or lower chances for a warm or a cool outcome, not bigger or smaller anomalies. NOAA Climate.gov map, based on data from NOAA CPC.

Places where the 2018 forecast

favors well above normal (green) or well below normal (brown) spring precipitation.

A late-winter storm moving through California on Friday piled up snow in the Sierra Nevada, making travel hazardous and raising avalanche danger. Highway 50 in the Sacramento Valley and the Lake Tahoe Basin, Interstate 80 from Colfax to Nevada and Highway 89 from Truckee to Squaw Valley were all closed Friday because of snow and multiple spinouts, according to the Placer County Sheriff. Highway 89 re-opened at around 1:00 p.m. Friday. See a video

Dozens of fires in Victoria's west and southwest (Australia) that started on March 17 destroyed several homes, killed cattle and burnt large swathes of land on Sunday, March 18. Two of the bigger fires at Colac in western Victoria measuring 7,400 acres and 16,000 acres were being blown east from the wind changes. There are fears entire dairy herds have been lost in the Terang and Cobden areas, while farmers are scrambling to find generators or walking their cows to neighboring farms so they can be milked. The study includes more than 60 years of data on U.S. weather and Arctic climate conditions, from 1950 to 2016. This new study finds that unusually warm episodes in the Arctic coincide with periods of extreme winter weather in the United States, pretty much everywhere east of the Rocky Mountains and especially on the East Coast. An Osprey at the moment of impact. At least 98% of its diet consists of fish, pretty much any fish. The requirements are that the fish fall within the weight range they can haul out (usually no more than 10 oz) & it's within their "striking" range of 3 feet from the surface. Notice how the wings are placed far back to avoid damaging/breaking them when hitting the water. The whole body is aligned to minimize impact.

Researchers find levels of plastic fibres in popular bottled water brands could be twice as high as those found in tap water. According to the new study, the most common type of plastic fragment found was polypropylene – the same type of plastic used to make bottle caps. The bottles analysed were bought in the US, China, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Lebanon, Kenya and Thailand. Read more

What is biodiversity? Read the article It is the variety of life on Earth, in all its forms and all its interactions. If that sounds bewilderingly broad, that’s because it is. Biodiversity is the most complex feature of our planet and it is the most vital. A more philosophical way of viewing biodiversity is this: it represents the knowledge learned by evolving species over millions of years about how to survive through the vastly varying environmental conditions Earth has experienced. Seen like that, experts warn, humanity is currently “burning the library of life”. Do animals and bugs really matter to me? For many people living in towns and cities, wildlife is often something you watch on television. But the reality is that the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat all ultimately rely on biodiversity. Some examples are obvious: without plants there would be no oxygen and without bees to pollinate there would be no fruit or nuts. Others are less obvious – coral reefs and mangrove swamps provide invaluable protection from cyclones and tsunamis for those living on coasts, while trees can absorb air pollution in urban areas. How bad is it? Very. The best studied creatures are the ones like us – large mammals. Tiger numbers, for example, have plunged by 97% in the last century. Many are threatened: 25% of mammals, 41% of amphibians and 13% of birds. Billions of individual populations have been lost all over the planet, with the number of animals living on Earth having plunged by half since 1970. Abandoning the normally sober tone of scientific papers, researchers call the massive loss of wildlife a “biological annihilation” representing a “frightening assault on the foundations of human civilisation”. What’s destroying biodiversity? We are, particularly as the human population rises and wild areas are razed to create farmland, housing and industrial sites. Poaching and unsustainable hunting for food is another major factor. More than 300 mammal species, from chimpanzees to hippos to bats, are being eaten into extinction. The hardest hit of all habitats may be rivers and lakes, with freshwater animal populations in these collapsing by 81% since 1970, following huge water extraction for farms and people, plus pollution and dams. By weight, 97% of the world’s vertebrate land animals are humans or their livestock – just 3% are thought to be wild. Illustration: Frances Marriott

March 24 Annual Return Of C'waam Ceremony

Along the banks of the Sprague River, in Chiloquin, Ore. the C'waam Ceremony is held each year after the first big Fish-Blanket snow in March when c’waam (also known as the Lost River Sucker) swim up the Sprague River to spawn.

Traditions of the Klamath Tribe state that watchmen or swaso.llalalYampgis were placed along the riverbanks to see exactly when the fish would return. The head “shaman” would then give thanks for their return to the Indian people. The last known shaman to perform the ceremony was Lee Snipes – Captain Sky, perhaps in the early 30’s.

The Klamath Tribe celebrate each year with traditional dancing and drumming, a traditional feed, releasing of a pair of c’waam into the river, and other ceremonial practices. The c’waam are provided by the Tribes own aquatic research center.

Everyone is Welcome! There are no animals allowed at the ceremony and only approved photographers are allowed to film the ceremony (The cremation segment is closed to all filming and cameras).

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.
