WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIES NEWS & EVENTS November 1, 2011 Visit us on Twitter: twitter.com/BCWomensStudies Friend us on Facebook: “Jane Gender” Greetings Women’s and Gender Studies Community, With the second half of the semester underway, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on a few of our program’s exciting accomplishments. The Women’s and Gender Studies Program recently hosted the first event of our ’11‐’12 Speaker Series. Dr. Tricia Rose, a professor of African Studies at Brown University, spoke profoundly to a room full of over 170 students about the troubling nature of the myths and biases surrounding idealizations of beauty and body‐image. Dr. Rose also discussed how the cultural images that commercial hip hop music promulgates have complicated and reinforced many of these stereotypes. A large group of students remained after the lecture to ask questions and speak with Dr. Rose during her book sale and signing. Two of Dr. Rose’s books, The Hip Hop Wars and Black Noise were available to students for purchase. In other news, the Women’s and Gender Studies is pleased and honored to announce that Judith Dempewolff, a clinical psychologist and instructor in the psychology department, has been appointed to teach “Introduction to Feminisms” this Spring 2012 Semester. Judith has taught “Psychology of Gender” in years past and brings with her a strong background in social psychology. We are looking forward to enriching this important course with an additional lens that can be brought to the examination of women’s and gender issues. Please take some time to look over the upcoming events and campus resources captured in the pages below. As a special show of appreciation to all of our Women’s and Gender Studies minors, our staff and interns have coordinated a pizza luncheon, for which details can be found in this newsletter. You will also find a listing of WGS approved courses for the spring semester, for those of you who are working toward the minor, or simply interested in learning more about women’s and gender issues. Thank you for your ongoing support of our program and for being a part of this wonderful learning community at Boston College. My best wishes, Sharlene Hesse‐Biber, Ph. D Professor of Sociology Director of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program A #etter from t*e +irector.

INTRODUCTION TO FEMINISMS

What are some students saying about Introduction to Feminisms?

“I’ve learned a lot about the issues that women face that I, as a male, would have never known about before. You hear a lot about the stereotypes put on women, but I’m also finding out a lot about the stereotypes that women have of men. Taking this class lets me be a voice for males. I would definitely tell guys to take this course.”

- James Mackay, current Fems student

‐LaurenRitter,previousIntrotoFeminismsstudent

“Intro to Fems is so important because it is absolutely necessary to debunk the myths of what feminism truly is and explore the new cultural and global perspectives on the significance of the feminist movement.”

- Renee Marchant, current TA

“This class is so eye opening and easy to connect with... We are talking about lives here. Students’lives. Your disposition, appearance, job, safety, & economic status. The topics covered in Intro to Fems are absolutely unavoidable in life. Feminisms will change the way any student sees the world, whether they like it or not.”

-Brit Dunn, current TA

EN125 / HS148 / PS125 / SC225
