BIOFAT – BIOfuel From Algae Technologies
Project nr. 268211Call identifier FP7-ENERGY-2010-2Funding scheme Collaborative project
BIOFAT is part of the Algae Cluster together with two more projects
BIOFAT – BIOfuel From Algae TechnologiesObjective
“To demonstrate at industrial scale (10 ha) the feasibility of biofuel production from microalgae”
BIOFAT will demonstrate at 10-ha scale proven and tested technologies
developed by Consortium members at small scale. The three main targets are:
energy efficiency
economic positive result
environmental sustainability
BIOFAT will develop the Algorefinery concept through sustainability.

Development
The project will integrate all the processes from single cell to biofuel production.
The production stage will be based on photobioreactors for inocula production, and raceways for production of bulk biomass and induction of oil/starch accumulation, necessary to obtain the biofuel (biodiesel and bioethanol).
Carbon dioxide derived from fermentation will be used.
Technological Approach
BIOFAT – BIOfuel From Algae Technologies
A European project supported through the Seven Framework Programme for Research and Technological
Development
Microalgae to biofuel Demonstration project includes:
farming area of 10-ha for microalgae cultivation
annual productivity target of 100 tons dry biomass per ha
Industrial carbon dioxide derived from fermentation to be used as raw material
Production based on different technologies:
low-energy consuming photobioreactors for inocula production
o High productivity technology
raceway ponds for production of bulk biomass and oil/starch accumulation
o Cell oil and carbohydrate accumulation obtained by nutrient stress.
