AROUND OUR SCHOOL

PATDuring Weeks 7 to 10, students in Year 3 to 10, will be undertaking the Progressive Achievement Tests, commonly referred to as “PAT tests”, in

Reading and Mathematics.

These will be conducted during your child’s normal instruction time and give our teaching staff valuable information about how our literacy

and numeracy programs are working. Staff analyse student results to get the most from the testing.

Results can be used at both group and individual level:

• PAT Maths and Reading scale scores can be used to measure improvement over time

• A picture of how students' results compare with results of students in the norm reference sample in the same year level

across Australia

• Analysis of students' performance across curriculum content strands will provide information to inform teaching practice.

Early in Term 4 our R to 2 students will be similarly undertaking the PAT Early Years testing in Maths and Reading.

FATHER’S DAY STALL 2019

RUOK? DAY!

On Wednesday 14th August and Thursday 15th August our volunteer-run Father’s Day stall was held in MG3. It was wonderful to see so many students attend the stall and having lots of fun selecting gifts for their loved ones. The volunteers and I enjoyed talking to the students as we wrapped their gifts and it was great to see such wonderful manners. Thank you to the teachers for accompanying their classes and supporting all students where needed. A big thank you to the amazing volunteers who assisted over the two days - Rekha Prabagaran, Karen Thompson, Mandy Leventis, Carol Woods, Anu Andrews, Danam Andrews and Melissa Briggs. A special mention goes to Tara Mather and Jodie Warner who not only helped at the stall both days, but also spent months planning and preparing for the event. All proceeds from this event will go towards improving student facilities.

Yasmine Flinn, Community Liaison Officer

RUOK? Day is coming up at The Heights School on Thursday 12th September 2019!

The Primary and Secondary Student Leadership Teams have been working very hard behind the scenes to promote RUOK? Day and help to spread the RUOK? Day message. The RUOK? Day organisation aims to create more connected communities by encouraging people to start life-changing conversations with others.

Activities on the day include:

• Wear something yellow to show your support of positive wellbeing and mental health • R-6 Student Leadership members running a workshop about RUOK? Day with their own class • Year 7-12 Student Leadership members helping to plan a pastoral care RUOK? Day lesson • Lunchtime activities with a focus on promoting “coping strategies” for positive wellbeing • Activities include: student led cafes, bake sale, laughter lounge, bubble blowing, “hug-a- tree”, music, skipping, yoga, meditation, sports and much more!

The goals of RUOK? Day are to:

1. Boost our student, staff and family’s confidence to meaningfully connect and ask about life's ups and downs 2. Nurture our sense of responsibility to regularly connect and support others 3. Strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us 4. Support students to learn a range of coping strategies for positive wellbeing.

BOOK WEEK 2019“Reading is my SECRET POWER”

Wow! We have just had a really busy few weeks with all of our Arts and Book Week activities.

Students are still judging the best shortlisted titles in the Early Years category for The Heights School with the overall decision to be made at a future Assembly. If you would like to view all the official winners please go to https://www.cbca.org.au/winners-2019

Huge thanks to every student, teacher, parent, caregiver or friend who contributed to the week.

Special mention is made to Mr Piggott’s Year 6 class who produced an amazing item at the Parade on Friday. They performed to a Taylor Swift song and routine which incorporated a special Book Week poem written by the talented Ms Burnett-Read (Reception teacher replacing Ms Simmons). Please read the poem (see below).

Also a huge thank you to Mr Oscar Asbanu who really added to the atmosphere of the Parade with his passionate playing of the digeridoo.

The school community dressed as different characters who inspired them with their secret powers.

On Wednesday some Year 8 students prepared a comic book under the guidance of talented graphic artist Gina Chatterton who works at Green Light Comics in the city.

There were Treasure Hunts, a Poetry Slam, art activities and of course reading and sharing of books! Many thanks to Mr Powell, Ms Potts, Ms Christodoulou, Ms Golotta, Mr Dam and the entire staff for your amazing efforts.

Special mention to Amanda and her classes from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden who made some sensational scarecrows that are resting in the Library waiting for the Royal Adelaide Show to begin. Students are also responsible for the abundance of bugs and insects around the tent in the Library (see the books “Heads and Tails” and “Here comes Stinkbug”). Thank you!

May your reading be your “Secret Power” FOREVER!

Kind Regards

The Library Staff – Mr Powell, Ms Potts, Ms Simpson and Ms Kellye

THE ARTS

As the sun was setting in the west and the light was fading, we officially opened our first SALA Exhibition on Monday 19th August at 5pm. The absence of light did not darken the mood; in fact, it added atmosphere in spades and created an environment for people to socialise, enjoy a glass of wine, some nice food and some great artworks. Permeating through the conversations taking place around the gallery could be heard the wonderful acoustic guitar of Connor Whyte, playing in the background through the entire event.

Local artist Alana Preece officially opened the exhibition. For the last fifteen years, Alana has lived in the City of Tee Tree Gully and is a member of Modbury based art group, Off the Couch Art Studio. In 2016 Alana’s website (alanapreece.com), was included in the Australian National Digital Archive (PANDORA), deemed by the State Library of South Australia (in conjunction with the National Library of Australia), as being of “cultural significance and long term research value to ongoing generations”.

Alana spoke about the value and benefits of supporting students to create artworks and provide them with opportunities to display their work in such a professional way. The positive experience they gain from an event such as this, transfers into their lives and wider interests.

Art galleries build and represent a community. All the artworks displayed represented the thoughts, feelings and observations of our Heights School community, from preschool to Year 12 and members of staff.

During Arts Week an estimated 400 visitors saw the exhibition. All visitors enjoyed the opportunity to view the artworks with their friends, network, socialise and vote for the People’s Choice Award. Many classes attended the gallery with their teachers, discussing the artworks and sketching some of their favourite pieces throughout the week. Now in its eleventh year the exhibition is part of the fabric of our school. In 2016, we began to include teacher entries for the first time. This year there were one hundred and fifty works on display.

A big thank you to our judges, Mr Gill, Ms Cook and Ms Bourn. Choosing the winners this year was particularly difficult, owing to the number and quality of works on display. Thank you and congratulations to all the artists that entered their work this year.

Congratulations to the students who won a prize in the Art Exhibition Competition for 2019 (see artwork pictured on following pages).

THE DREAM

A big thank you to everyone who came to watch The Dream at Golden Grove Arts Theatre. It was an amazing set of performances and the cast and crew worked extremely hard over seven months to present such a high quality show. Mrs Putnam and I are very proud of their hard work.

We also had a review written by Barry Hill from Stage Whispers which painted us in a great light: http://www.stagewhispers.com.au/schools/dream

The Heights School Players (SA). Golden Grove Arts Centre, Golden Grove. August 16-18, 2019“The course of true love never did run smooth.” One of William Shakespeare’s most famous quotes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Little did he ever think, even in his wildest dreams (no pun intended), that one of his iconic comedies would be relocated to India and given the Bollywood Treatment! The Heights School Players with Sally Putnam (Performance Director/Designer), Charisa Sanders (Musical Director/Choreographer) and Beth Sztekel (Props/Photography/Media Marketing/Publications) at the helm, have done just that and taken the Bard’s classic in a new direction, renaming it The Dream. There have been some cuts made, some dialogue altered and some added. This was not to ‘dumb’ down Shakespeare, but to make it more achievable for younger players who have spent two and a half terms and a week of their holidays bringing The Dream to life. With a cast of 45 (7 backstage crew and 38 cast members, some playing on alternating performances), The Dream is The Heights School Players first production in a ‘real theatre’. The cast ranges from Year 6 to 12 and a reception student. Most the cast play the whole season, however there are 7 characters who alternate. This gives everyone who would like to act a chance to shine. There are no auditions; any student who shows interest will be given a role. So, it is to their credit that Shakespeare’s words are spoken with such understanding. What is occasionally lost in clarity and volume is more than made up for in youthful enthusiasm for the play and the joy of performance.Upon entering the auditorium, we are immediately transported to India with distant strains of the sitar and the faint waft of Indian spices. The set is simple but effective; rostra across the back, black curtains on each side with green, blue and orange lights spanning the back curtain. The original characters from A Midsummer Night’s Dream are all there, but they are barefoot and wearing saris, leggings and kurtas with a sprinkling of western costume. Instead of a wood we find ourselves in a mysterious forest and instead of Ancient Athens we visit an Indian market.Because of the alternating casts, it would be unfair of me to single out individual actors, so rather than do that I will highlight the scenes that stood out for me.The opening market scene was a plethora of colour, song and polished Bollywood choreography featuring virtually the whole cast. The scenes between the four lovers; Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius were skilfully handed, both in characterisation and pace. They can be thankless roles in the wrong hands, but certainly not in this case.Oberon, Titania and Puck, with elaborate headdresses or hairstyles, take us to fairyland; Oberon with his authoritarian demeanour, Titania determined to have her way and Puck the joker/narrator of the piece. As in many productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Rude Mechanicals steal the show. Their performance of Pyramus and Thisbe at the triple wedding is a riot of deliberate overacting. Every player had their moment to shine, and shine they do, much to the delight of the audience. The triumphant wedding dance is a celebration of the journey these talented performers have led us on. Energetic, well drilled and using the stage space to the best advantage, it was highly entertaining. It was a pleasure to watch a classic performed with youthful exuberance under the guidance of such dedicated teachers. It is nice to know Shakespeare will continue to live on thanks to the devotion of these young performers!Barry Hill

SCIENCE NEWSWave MachineLast week students in Mr Roubanis’s Year 10 Science class constructed a

wave machine by using gummy bears, skewers and duct tape.

The relationship between wavelength, frequency and wave speed was easily

observed with the wave machine.

Wave speed = wavelength × frequency

When a quick pulse was compared to a slow pulse, there was a noticeable

difference in the wavelength, however, wave speed remained the same.

If the pulse was shorter (frequency is higher), then the wavelength was

reduced, and the product of wavelength and frequency remained the same.

To portray changes in wave speed, the wave must pass into a different

medium. When the gummy bears were removed from half the skewers, this

was observed. The wave travelled from a region containing gummy bears to

a region without. The wave was observed to speed up in the gummy bear-

free region. This models how a light wave speeds up when transitioning

from water to air (transitioning from a higher index of refraction to a lower index of refraction

HPE AND STEMEach year in Health and Physical Education our Year 9 students participate in a Minor Games unit. This unit incorporates Indigenous Games and International Cultural Games as well as students designing their own minor game. Students use core skills and principles from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to design their Minor Game and present it to their peers within their class. It is always an exciting opportunity for students to highlight their critical and creative thinking, literacy and numeracy skills whilst continuing to develop their personal and social capacity. This year again we have seen some exceptional Minor Games, which undoubtedly will now be repeated throughout individual teachers classes.

SPORTS NEWS

VISTA SPORTS

VISTA Year 9/10 Girls Basketball Carnival On Friday the 16th of August our Year 9/10 Girls Basketball Team competed in the VISTA Basketball Carnival at Mars Stadium. Although the girls came away without a win, they played 6 games without substitutions and continued to work cohesively and communicated well. They were exhausted but continued trying their best and encouraging one another (by screaming… it’s called encouraging). They should be highly commended for the resilience they displayed. From the girls themselves;

‘We all tried our hardest and had fun.’

‘It was a good experience because we got to bond with peers from other year levels.’

‘We all shot a 3 and Hannah shot a deep 3 that went swish whilst defended.’

VISTA Boys Netball Our Junior and Senior Boys Netball Teams competed against other schools in the NE VISTA Carnival on Friday 23rd of August at Argana Park Netball Courts. Both teams started off shaky with an initial loss to Avenues College. Our Junior Boys team then fought hard in their second game to score a well-earned goal against a tough opponent. Whereas our Senior Boys were out for redemption taking home their first win for the day. Our Senior Boys continued their winning streak bringing home a few more wins for the day and placing 3rd overall. Despite unfortunately not winning a game, our Junior Boys team continued to grow and improve as a team across the course of the day. It was a beautiful sunny day for all involved. Thank you to our coaches; Abbie, Barzi, Brittany and Skyla for the phenomenal job they did over the course of the day.

VISTA Year 8/9 Boys 9-a-side AFL Carnival On Monday 12th of August our Year 8/9 Boys 9-a-side AFL team competed against other schools at The Avenues. The boys started off the day with minimal communication amongst the team and as the day progressed so did their communication. The ground was really wet and muddy from the rain over the past week and the boys recounted slipping and sliding regularly throughout the day. Despite finishing last, all boys expressed that the carnival was fun and it was great to get to know students from different year levels. It was a challenging day playing against students from other schools and playing with minimal substitutions but enjoyable none the less.

Eulaly Allen, Sports Coordinator

VISTA Senior Boys 9-a-side AFL Our Senior Boys 9-a-side AFL team competed in the VISTA Carnival on Wednesday 14th of August at The Heights School. The boys did an exceptional job, going undefeated all day and bringing home the win in the grand-final. Congratulations to all involved in the carnival. From their words;

It was an immaculate Wednesday, not a cloud in the sky. We started off the day with

a tough win over Banksia Park, then two smashing wins against Roma Mitchell and

Avenues. The boys continued our form with another smashing victory over Parafield

Gardens to earn a spot in the grand final. Ben, Jordan and Lachlan were strong in

defence all day, with minimal goals conceded (helps when the ball wasn’t down there

much). Aidan, James and Josh D were amazing in the midfield giving our forwards

first use the whole day with James also kicking 8 goals from the midfield. Nathan

(17 goals), Josh O (12 goals), Deakin (6 goals) and Frank (5 goals including the game

sealing goal after the siren in the grand final) were all impressive in attack. Overall,

we were thrilled to take home the silverware on a great day.
