GRACE AND STRUGGLE The gift of grace increases as the struggles increase. —St. Rose of Lima
Strength your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be disjointed but healed. -Hebrews 12:12-13
WELCOME THE STRANGER We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing violence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD.” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own homeland, the reign of God. OUR MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Parish is a loving, caring community of devoted and committed Catholic Christians. Our mission purpose is to spread and deepen the Kingdom of God among all people. Our aim is to carry out this mission through our strong tradition of faith and family, through a strong sacramental and liturgical life, through a total Catholic educational program, through a ministry to the social needs of the community and through evangelization.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division. —James Field, Copyright © J. The 10th annual Ava and Jacob Saucier
Memorial Scholarship Benefit will be held on
Sunday, September 8 beginning at 10:30 am - 1:00 pm in the Holy Family Parish Hall.
It is amazing to see how many people come together to celebrate Ava & Jacob's lives and memory.
In the last 9 years, over $197,000 has been raised to endow the tuition scholarship to Holy Family School.
To date, 140 students have been recipients of tuition assistance from 75% of the funds raised. With an abundance of gratitude, we begin the countdown to this year's event. We are so grateful and blessed to have had the support of family, friends, Holy Family Church, School and our community, who have generously donated their time, talent and love to assure the success of the Ava and Jacob Saucier Memorial Scholarship in their honor. A jambalaya benefit will help to endow the scholarship. All proceeds will go toward the scholarship fund. Please help us celebrate Ava and Jacob’s lives and memory on Sunday, September 8, from 10:30-1:00 at the Holy Family Parish Hall. Tickets for the dinner are $8.00. Drinks and sweets will be available for purchase. You may eat-in or dine-out. There will also be a silent auction, sweet shop, face painting and a raffle for a cypress glider swing. Please consider purchasing tickets to benefit this scholarship fund.
GUIDE BOOK & DIRECTORY ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY
We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Church Office.
Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
KNOW THE ANGELS Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit. Without being seen, they are present with you. —St. Francis de Sales
HELP OUR SCHOOL Just a reminder to everyone that Holy Family School will be collecting Community Coffee UPC labels as well as Box Tops for Cash again this year. Holy Family School receives a good bit of additional funding from both programs, so we would appreciate it, if you would collect them and send them to the front office at Holy Family School, Holy Family Church or drop them in the collection basket.
These are examples of what is being collected.
