Monday 12th May saw adouble presentation byBranch Chairman, MichaelWynne, at Fitzgeralds inSunderland.

At last year’s Sunderland“Octoberfest”, HardknottBrewery’s “Azimuth” wasvoted by attendees as Beer ofthe Festival, and Fitzgeraldsachieved Third place in theBranch’s Pub of the Yearvote.

We were delighted, therefore, that David and Anne Baileywere able to travel over fromCumbria to receive their welldeserved award at a specialHardknott Brewery tap-takeover organised by minehost at Fitzgerald’s, MattAldiss.

An excellent evening was hadby all who attended. Followingthe presentations of the

awards, Dave andAnne led afascinating tastingsession of someof their excellentales, includingseveral of theirvery special, andvery strongbottled beers.

Following thetasting session,Matt launchedinto the traditionalMeet the BrewerNight Quiz. It wasnot certainwhether brainpower andmemory washoned or dulledby the excellentales on offer fromHardknott, but theQuiz brought amost enjoyableevening to its conclusion.

If you are travelling towardsRoker from Sunderland onthe A183 one of the first sightsyou see on the left before youreach the sea front as youpass the Roker Marina is adistinctive modern looking pubof red brick and glass frontage.Older readers will recognise alarge picture of Dean Martin onthe wall outside. Why? - Moreon this later

The pub is of course theHarbour View. On a fine dayyou will often see drinkerssoaking up the sun, suppingpints and watching the worldgo by outside this popular

drinking establishment.

The inside has a moderncomfortable feel about it withan open plan bar. Sixhandpulls lure you in with ahelpful chalk board at the endof the bar listing the caskconditioned real ales available. There are TV screens andnon-intrusive backgroundmusic.

At the time of the visit in midMay 2014, the 6 beers on offerwere from Edinburgh,Somerset, West Yorkshire (2),Peterborough and Derbyshire. The aforementioned boardincluded the running total ofales for the year. That day itwas 256, so I reckon that’s a

turnover of about 14 per week.On average each beer lasts 2days.

Apparently, and this isunusual, the regularshelp to choose the realales on offer. This is afirst for me and I think isa brilliant idea. EveryWednesday sees areduction in price for realale after 7pm

A recent initiative is a liveacoustic music night heldevery Friday.

The pub does not offer meals, other than bar snacks. However above the HarbourView (and this brings us backto the large picture outside) isAmores Restaurant Some ofyou may recall that DeanMartin had a hit in 1954 with“That’s Amore”.

The restaurant, which used tobe Benedict’s Bar, openedtowards the end of last yearand can be accessed up stairsto the left of the bar. Both thepub and the restaurantcomplement each other, withdiners having a drink in the

pub before their meal. Soundslike a perfect night out to me!

There are bus stops outsidethe pub, with regular servicesto Sunderland City Centre andalong the coast to SouthShields. As well the Marinaand Sea Front nearby, it’s aten minute walk to the NationalGlass Centre, St PetersChurch and SunderlandUniversity St Peters Campus.

The Harbour View is a regularin the CAMRA Good BeerGuide and features in theSunderland and SouthTyneside CAMRA Branch’sSunderland Real Ale Trails. This leaflet can be foundonline at http://camra-angle.co.uk/documents/SlandRealAleTrail_Feb2014.pdf.

The Clarendon, on HighStreet East, used to be afavourite haunt of Real Aledrinkers in Sunderland, mainly due to the qualityand price of its beers (mosttravelling no further to getto the bar than from BullLane Brewery, which waslocated in the pub cellar).

When the pub sadlyclosed around eighteenmonths ago, with rumoursof structural problems, many feared it would neveropen again. So it waspleasing to hear of a newtenant and refurbishmentwork towards the end oflast year and when the pubreopened under the newname of “The ButchersArms”, many weredelighted to see that realale was still a priority.

The pub itself is a bit of anhistoric landmark inSunderland. There was aClarendon Hotel on the siteas early as 1724(previously it was the siteof a prison for the pressgangs that plied their tradeon that stretch of the RiverWear). The Licence datesback to 1724, making it theoldest pub in Sunderland –previous names have beenThe Hare and Hound, TheCropt Fox, The Crown Innand The Board, beforeonce again becoming The

ClarendonHotel in 1865.At the time, that part ofSunderland, around thedocks/ Hendonarea, used toboast around60 publichouses – TheButchers Armsis the only pubthat has survived from thisperiod.

The pub is next to “BullLane” – one of the oldestsurviving alleys inSunderland, that runsbetween High Street Eastand the river. Smugglingwas rife in the area – BullLane was well used for thisand the cellar of the pubhas a capped smuggler’stunnel in it. The pub andBull Lane are also reputedto be haunted and the areawas said to have beenfrequented by notoriouspoisoner, Mary AnneCotton.

The new tenant – SteveClark – fittingly given thenew name of the pub, hasbeen involved in the meattrade for most of hisworking life. The bar itselfis a single room bar, withimpressive views over theRiver Wear. Since Stevehas taken over, there has

been a concerted effort tomake the pub an integralpart of the local community.

There is a menu of freshlycooked food available, boasting large portions andvery reasonable prices-breakfast is reportedlyexcellent.

The four hand pulls on thebar have mainly localbeers, from the likes ofJarrow and Stablesbreweries, with a brewunique to the pub-Butcher’s Brew –available. There is also livemusic on most weekends,as well as karaokesessions. Mondayevenings have cheapdraught beer and free barfood to attract customers.

It is great to see thishistoric pub trading onceagain and keeping real alea focus of the beersavailable to its customers.

The Cottage Tavern inCleadon Village has beenserving the community as apublic house for over 150years. Prior to being a publichouse, local knowledgesuggests that the building maywell have been a rope-worksand then a house. One

possible date for itsestablishment as a tavern is1839.

Situated in the village itself,

not too far from the villageduck-pond, The CottageTavern is an Enterprise Innshouse, whose tenant isMagnus Wilson, formeroperations director at Vaux

Breweries.Lesley Cobbis the recentlyappointedmanageress atthis busy andpopular local.Havingpreviouslyworked at TheMile, in SouthShields towncentre, Lesleyis enjoying thechange ofatmosphereprovided by thecosier surroundings of thistraditionally decorated pub, with its open-plan layout.

On the bar there are threehand-pulls, two serving caskale and the third serving OldRosie cider. Black SheepBitter is an always present, and is very popular with theclientèle, who regularlyconsume three casks perweek. (In total, not perperson!) The other ale varies,

but there is a realeffort to serve theofferings of localbreweries. If you want to playa traditional pubgame, a dartsboard anddominoes areavailable, and thereare two quiz nightseach week, onMonday andThursday evenings.

The latter is more of a 'funquiz', Lesley tells us. Inaddition, each Sunday eveningthere is "Live Music", with avariety of music types on offer.Lesley has also recently

reinstated the popular weekly"Meat Draw". If you can’t waitto grill your steak, or areunlucky enough not to win theMeat Draw, you can ease yourhunger pangs with a freshlymade toasted sandwich.

If you enjoy walking yourcanine friend on nearbyCleadon Hills, you will bepleased to know that TheCottage is a very dog-friendlyestablishment, with water-bowls provided, and a specialcontainer of dog-treatssecreted behind the bar. Thereare also a couple of picnictables outside the front of thepub, so that one may sitoutside and watch the worldgo by.If you were to be sittingoutside for any length of time, you would soon realise thatthe Cottage is well-served bypublic transport, with thefrequent No 35 service in all itsvariations providing a linkbetween South Shields,Sunderland and beyond. Sitting in the departurelounge in DomodyedovoAirport, which servesMoscow, I struck up aconversation with a youngRussian chap who spokeimmaculate English. Wespoke about all manner ofthings but for some strangereason the conversationturned to the consumptionof alcoholic beverages, andin particular of beer. He toldme that I was speaking witha very, very unusualRussian, from an equallyunusual family: not one ofhis family drinks alcohol. Iwasn't sure whether or notto congratulate him uponhis sobriety, when one ofthe reasons for my recentvisit to Russia was to see if Icould track down some realale. I had even broached thesubject with beer writerextraordinaire, Roger Protz,on his recent visit to thebranch area.

It is certain that theconsumption of beer inRussia is massive, and thatthere is a growing trend forbars selling local beers, amongst which are agrowing number of realales. Would I be able to findany during my brief stay, which included some timein St.Petersburg, Moscowand Volgograd?I have a number of friendsin Russia, but the majorityare not beer drinkers.Nevertheless, my reputationhaving gone before me, onthe first night inSt.Petersburg I was taken toa 'trendy' bar just off theNevsky Prospekt. My young

friend had done someresearch on my behalf andhad identified the fact thatthere were several beers ontap. From the menu I (withAlena’s help) identified«Василеостровскоедомашнее» живое, не

фильтрованное asVasilyostrovskoye Home, live and unfiltered. Just thejob! The beer arrived in alarge 1 litre glass, andresembled a wheat bear inappearance. It was verypleasant and had arefreshing tartness to thetaste. The foaming head didnot take up so much spaceas in the image above, thankfully. Alena confessedthat she had not drunkmuch beer, but waspersuaded to try “ФулерсЛондон Прайд” - yes,Fullers “London Pride” andenjoyed it very much. (Itwas on draft, but Ipresumed it was a kegversion.) The beer was veryreasonable priced - my litreof ale was 229 roubles, about £4.

My time in Moscow waslimited to one day, a day notto be forgotten, for manyreasons, most of them to dowith Russian bureaucracy, and there was barely achance to eat, never mindexplore the city for real ale.

My next port of call wasVolgograd, in southernRussia, which is situated onthe mighty Volga (that’s it inthe background!)

Volgograd, formerlyStalingrad, is an amazingcity, and well worth visitingif you have the opportunity. There have been someunpleasant occurrencesthere in the past year, butthey were not about to putme off. On my first eveningthere I was told by anotheryoung friend, “I know youlike live music and beer, so

we are going to the“Bibliotheka Pivnoya” - theBeer Library. This was afascinating bar/restaurantdecorated like a library, withshelves of books andbottles of beer decoratingthe walls. The food was

The JD Wetherspoonchain runs regular beerfestivals across it’s pubs. With up to 50 alesavailable during afestival, getting to samplea good range of said alesnecessitates travellingbetween a few of theirpubs. It was with this inmind that two of yourintrepid reporters (MWand DB) set out armedwith only a bus ticket anda mobile phone with acamera on the secondday of the festival(Saturday 29th March) tosee what was out there.

First port of call was theWild Boar in Houghton-le-Spring. Fortified by alarge Wetherspoonbreakfast and two cups ofWetherspoon coffee thefirst ale of the day wassampled.

‘Young Henry’s RealAle’ (4.0%) is brewed byAustralian RichardAdamson at Bank’sbrewery forWetherspoon. Describedas a modern take on thetraditional English bestbitter, both of yourexplorers found it to be a

very satisfying and tastybrew. So maybe Australiadoes give more than aXXXX after all.

Next up was Banks’s‘Czech Mate’ (4.4%), aBohemian style beer.Whilst in excellentcondition, both of usfound it to be bland andboring. A stalemate infact, en passant.

Alighting onto the number4 bus, the short trip wasmade to The William deWessyngtonin Washington.

Here the first ale sampled

was Brain’s ‘White Out’(4.0%), a naturally cloudybeer in a Belgian witstyle. Sadly we found thisto be not very cloudy, andlacking in flavour. Muchbetter was our second

choice, the product of theSpanish brewer Albert

Pacheco, Mateo &Bernabe Fermin ‘RedAle’ (5.8%). Not as redas described, but a veryflavoursome andinteresting ale, aptlydescribed as having asweet, malty character inboth the aroma and in theflavour.

Then it was onto the 56bus to Sunderland, and

straight into the LambtonWorm. After elbowing

Page 13: A Friendly Welcome Guaranteedcamraangle.sst.camra.org.uk/documents/Issue36.pdf · The Steamboat is a dog-friendly pub. CAMRA-ANGLE 36 - Summer 2014 - 3 Monday 12th May saw a double

our way to the bar, wefinally managed to gettwo pints (one pint each!)of Wharfe Bank ‘BlackGeld’ (4.5%). This is anale that is a contradictionin terms. Some readersof a nervous dispositionmay have to sit down toread this: it’s a BlackIPA! It held up to thedescription of being bothtoasted and bitter toppedoff with the hoppiness wehave come to expectfrom an IPA. This was thefirst real ale highlight of

the day for both of us.Next up was Hildegard’s‘Solange’ (6.0%). ABelgian style saison beerwhich really worked. Verycitrus in taste, but alsowith enough bitterness tosatisfy. Second highlightof the day. Well done theLambton Worm!

A short walk took us tothe William Jameson, where we found it easier

to get to the bar and trythe Standeaven ‘AfricanPale Ale’ (4.2%). ASouth Africancollaboration for

Wetherspoon, this wasanother ale highlyapproved of by yourroving reporters. Lightcopper in colour, fruityand bitter. Very nice.

Next we went for theGreene King ‘DoubleHop Monster IPA’(7.2%). Sadly all themanagement would allow

us was a half pinteach………

This lived up to thedescription of…. “hugehop aromas impartingtropical, floral orangepeel citrus notes…….”(you get the picture).

Another excellent ale.Only really spoilt by theglasses it was served in!(see accompanyingphotographic evidence).

So all in all a very goodday was had by all. Whilstsome of the beers werenot outstanding in style, each was in excellentcondition and wellserved.

The clocks havechanged, spring hassprung, the Good Beerhas been pored over andit’s time to plan anotherpub crawl. Having visitedMorpeth, Berwick, Thirsk,Northallerton, Hartlepooland Alnmouth amongstothers over last fewyears, uncharted watersbeckoned. Now regularreaders of CAMRA –ANGLE will know thatone town in the area ishome to both thereigning Pub of The Yearand Club of the Year. I’mtalking about Darlingtonand the venues inquestion are The QuakerHouse and DarlingtonSnooker Club.

Eight of us piled onto thetrain for the short journeysouth then it was a 15minute walk into the towncentre. By chanceWetherspoons, who have 2bars in Darlington, werehosting their spring beerfestival, so it seemedappropriate to head to oneof them first, the WilliamStead, for our customarylate morning breakfast.

The pub is next to theNorthern Echo offices andMr Stead was a formereditor who had the

misfortune to be on theTitanic when it sunk (hedidn’t survive). Toaccompany our brekkiewas a good selection ofuntried ales, includingThwaites Coiled Spring, acloudy Brains White Out,Everards Regimental IPAand NØgne Ø Brown Ale,a Norwegian brew.

By now I was gettingimpatient; The QuakerHouse was calling. Themulti- award winning pubis in Mechanics Yard, which is in a narrow alleybetween High Row andSkinnergate, just wheresomeone was playingbagpipes outside Binnsstore ( no, I don’t knoweither).

The publooked too busy toaccommodate 8 of us, butluckily the upstairs roomwhich hosts live music wasopened up especially forus. Consisting of comfysettees, it was the perfectplace to relax and enjoy acouple of pints. With 9

guest ales Sonnet 43’sLost Saints special wasthe first down followed by a5% American dark alecalled Bunsen, a newbrewery to me, Atom, based in Hull.

Another attraction for realale aficionados is our nextpub Number Twenty-2.This was just a short walkdown the alley, south alongSkinnergate and right intoConniscliife Road.

The pub front looks like ashop window and isanother CAMRA awardwinning pub. This is thehome of The VillageBrewer

brewery, although the beers areactually made atHambleton’s in Melmerbyin North Yorkshire. BullPremium, Old Raby Aleand White Boar arebrewed so it made sense

to try one, in this case theBull Premium. Up to 10guest ales are usuallyavailable.

Next stop, heading backinto Skinnergate, is TheVoodoo Café, aMexican/South Americanthemed café which alsospecialises in internationalbottled beers. It’s onlybecause this is in theCAMRA Good Beer Guidethat it was considered. There were only 2handpulls, and one was acider so the choice wasTyne Bank Dakota Rise. While the beer was in goodcondition I wonder why it isin the guide when otherpubs we visited served

equally good, and morevaried beer.

Breakfast was wearing offso a fish and chip shopwas needed for a briefdrinking pause. Luckilythere was one a 2 minutewalk away. So suitablystuffed, we walked to whatwould be our last pub, theTanners Hall, next door. This Wetherspoons isnamed after the tannerswho used to tan skins inSkinnergate, dating back to1621. The place was busywith early evening drinkersbut with enough seats forall of us to enjoy morefestival beers. Theseincluded Cascadian Darkand a Lager from

Cameron’s calledGalactico.

With a train to catch, weran out of time to visit theSnooker Club. In fact at thetime of writing there were24 real ale outlets inDarlington Town Centre, soenough for another trip. The local CAMRA branchhas produced a useful RealGuide which providesinformation on all venues.

I recently went to Whitby forthe day, as I had not beenthere in quite a few years. Igot the coach down at 9.30,arriving in Whitby at 11.45unfortunately to some quitedreary weather. So with"What Pub" at the ready, Iset off to find the unknownand local breweries.

The first pub I encounteredwas "The Black Swan"(which I believe is a PunchTavern pub), they had twohand pulls on the bar,

Double Maxim and TimothyTaylors Landlord. TheDouble Maxim was selected,a decent pint but a regularup north.

Moving on to the second pub"Golden Lion", they had 5hand pulls but there wereonly two ales available,

Black Sheep andBombardier. TheBlack Sheep waschosen, another tworegulars in the northeast.

The third pub Iencountered was "TheDuke of York", this

pub has three hand pulls, all of which wereavailable, however it wasDeuchars, Abbot Aleand Black Sheep. Stillfamiliar features in pubs

back home.Deuchars wassampled to keepthe flow of a differentale in each pub.

After this I stoppedoff for the localdelicacy fish andchips in the lovely

"Monks Heaven Café", andthey even had ale, althoughit wasn't on hand pulls. Theyhad bottles of GoldenPippin and Black Sheep. The Golden Pippin went verynicely with the fish andchips, and on leaving thecafé, it appeared that finallythe weather had picked up.

In the fourth pub "TheBlack Horse", theyhave 6 hand pulls, 5 ofwhich were in use andthey even had realcider! The cidersavailable were OldRosie and Rosie's Pig,

the ales available includedOld Golden Hen, GoldenXPA and Prescott HillClimb. Finally I'd foundsome ales I'm not familiarwith, things can only getbetter. The Prescott HillClimb was the ale of choice.

On to the fifth Pub "The

Dolphin", I entered with highhopes after the lastestablishment and I was notdisappointed, they have 6hand pulls, 5 were availableand amongst them included,Whitby Saltwick Nab,Scarborough Mild, GoldenPippin, Timothy TaylorLandlord and Black Sheep.Whitby Saltwick Nab andScarborough Mild weresampled.

The sixth pub was called"The Buck"  they have 2hand pulls, but unfortunately

they only had TimothyTaylors Landlord available.

So quickly moving next doorto the seventh Pub "TheJolly Sailor", a SamuelSmiths pub, always reliablefor their Old Brewery Bitter,an old favourite and by farthe cheapest pint of the dayat £!.83.

In the eighth pub "The StarInn" all 3 of their hand pullswere available, GoldenPippin, Bombardier andHobgoblin. The Hobgoblin

was chosen this time.

The ninth pub was "TheAngel Hotel", aWetherspoons pub, theyhave 18 hand pulls over 2floors, the usual suspectshad appeared again butthere were unheard of alesto accompany them.Ruddles Best, Doombar,Black Sheep, Abbot Ale,London Pride, AdnamsBroadside,  BaytownBitter, Wood's ShropshireLad and Wheat Street - aSixpoint brewery American

craft beer brewed atAdnams. The ciders

here included OldRosie and BlackDragon. A great bar, lots of choice andfantastic service, especially fromConnor.

The tenth pub wasanother great success andits not hard to see why, "TheLittle Angel" has 8 handpulls, some known, some

unknown, CameronsStrongarm, Whitby Abbey

Blond, Wold TopHeadland Red,Purple MooseSnowdonia Aleand Brown CowCaptain Oateswhich wassampled, a verynice darkaromatic oat mild.

The eleventh pub was "TheWellington" only two handpulls in here but it’s nice tosee as many ciders as thereis ales, Doombar and OldRosie.

Alas the day was getting onand I had reached the twelfthPub, the "Station Hotel"ready for the coach, only tofind this bar was full ofwonders as well, a fantasticrange of ales (all be it someknown), these includedOsset Silver King, Timothy

Taylor Golden Best,Saltaire Blonde, SharpsAtlantic, Whitby Platform3, Camerons Strongarm,Hopback Summer

Lightning andTheakston XB. TheHopback SummerLightning was selected, agreat light ale.

All in all a fantastic dayout if you know where to go,all of the pubs are in walking

distance from each other, and the beer prices typicallyrange from £3.20 to £3.50,with the exception of theSamuel Smiths pub at £1.83and the Wetherspoonsranging from £2.79 to £3.25.

As Branch members will know, the methodnormally used for the selection of our BranchPub and Club of the Year is a postal vote heldearly each year. This method works well, butwith the increase in membership within the lastfew years to just under 500, it is also becomingincreasingly expensive and is a significant drainon financial resources. For this is reason it hasbeen proposed and accepted that from 2015onwards, we will move towards a system ofonline voting, which will be undertaken on theBranch website. It is vitally important, therefore, that members ensure that email addresses

lodged with CAMRA HQ are up to date, since theBranch will need to communicate with membersto find out who will be making use of theelectronic voting system. Of course, if membersdo not have access to the Internet, it will still benecessary to conduct a partial postal vote. Itmay also be possible to set up “votingsessions” for those members without access tothe Internet. We will provide more information tomembers as we approach voting time, but it isimportant that you are aware of thisdevelopment, and that email addresses suppliedto HQ are accurate.

Pub of the Year 2015:change in voting procedures

excellent, and whilst therewas no cask ale on offer, Icoped with three pints ofLeffe Brune from the tap.The bar area was very likean English pub, and evenhad football memorabiliaand the ubiquitous advertfor Newcastle Brown Ale.The live music took the formof a four-piece band whoplayed country and westernmusic, singing most of theirsongs in English. Anexcellent evening.

During the following day Ivisited some of themonuments and museumsdedicated to the Battle ofStalingrad - a veryimpressive and humblingexperience. Lunch in aUkrainian restaurantprovided the opportunity todrink a pint of kvas, atraditional fermentedbeverage which was mostrefreshing, and a glass ofvodka infused with horse-radish! That took me by

surprise, I can tell you, butstrangely enough I quiteenjoyed it.

On the evening before mydeparture, I was taken to anAmerican style

bar/restaurant in MarshalChuikov Street, and thereenjoyed a pint of ale brewedon the premises. I selected agolden ale - Khvalyonoye, at3.8%, an unfiltered beer in aGerman style. I could notswear to the fact that it wascask or keg, because it wasserved to our table, butnevertheless it tasted good.

My stay in Russia was ashort but, for the most parta most enjoyable one. Goodfriends, good company,

good music and some reallygood beer. I’m hoping to goback next year - I hear it’squite warm in Siberia at thistime of year!
