BACKGROUND

THE SOLUTION

This treatment solution installation was a first in the province of Québec. The overall system includes a first manhole which separates the flow through a flexible weir, which splits the storm water into two pretreatment units. The first treatment is provided by two Aqua Swirl systems that allow, using the standards of the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change (MDDELCC) the recovery of 60% of suspended solids and 20% of the phosphorus. These systems are designed for specific flows according to the project’s requirements. Contaminated water thus enters the vortex separators that ensure the recovery of sediments, oils and floating debris. The cleared water is discharged to four Aqua Filter secondary treatment units installed in parallel. These ensure the elimination of fine sediments, undesirable nutrients through filter media specific to each type of pollutant that needs to be removed. The filter cartridges are composed of perlite, silica sand of volcanic origin with a very high retention capacity. Treated storm water then flows into the main line before emptying into Lake Noranda.

Marie-France Tessier, engineer with Soleno and project manager, says: “It was essential for our customer to find the optimal solution that would preserve the natural envi-ronment of Lake Noranda and ensure sustainable develop-ment for future generations.”

Municipal authorities were aware of the contamination risks for this sensitive environment, which already showed signs of containing too much undesirable nutrients. Conse-quently, a local firm of consulting engineers who, together with Soleno experts, designed an innovative, sustainable and optimal storm water treatment system. The solution was installed by Lamothe (a division of Sintra) in August and September 2014.

THE BENEFITS

Manufactured in HDPE, these simple and easy-to-install systems are lightweight, durable, resistant to corrosion, with a volume that reduces excavation costs. Moreover, they have a distinct advantage over the competition - they are approved by the MDDELCC. The treatment units are avail-able in a range of diameters and contain no inner moving parts; manholes facilitate maintenance and replacement of the filter elements. In short, they are the most effective solution while allowing for substantial short- and long-term savings.
