A – General Description Course Title – Plastic Arts – Painting and Intermedia Qualification awarded – First cycle degree (BSc degree) (180 ECTS) Admission requirements – General admission procedures, re-enter and special admission schemes for candidates older than 23. The general admission system requires one of the following exams: Drawing; Culture and Art History; Descriptive Geometry. Regional preferences are established for Castelo Branco, Leiria, Lisboa, Portalegre and Santarém. Educational and Professional Goals – The degree in Plastic Arts – Painting and Intermedia confers a higher-level comprehensive professional profile (licenciatura) qualifying the graduates to perform professional functions with accuracy and sociotechnological actuality in the different domains of culture, particularly in the plastic arts domain. Both subject fields are based on a number of varied skills designed to provide a wide range of career opportunities in similar circumstances to those offered by renowned European higher education institutions. Through Contemporary Art Seminars, students have the opportunity to contact with renowned artists, art critics, curators and contemporary producers and programmers in relevant subject fields and benefit from their artistic practices, critical thought and derivative concepts. Access to Further Studies – The degree in Plastic Arts – Painting and Intermedia allows access to second-cycle degrees in the field or in related fields. A – General Description

Course Title – Plastic Arts – Painting and Intermedia

Qualification awarded – First cycle degree (BSc degree) (180 ECTS)

Admission requirements – General admission procedures, re-enter and special admission schemes for candidates older than 23. The general admission system requires one of the following exams: Drawing; Culture and Art History; Descriptive Geometry. Regional preferences are established for Castelo Branco, Leiria, Lisboa, Portalegre and Santarém.

Educational and Professional Goals – The degree in Plastic Arts – Painting and Intermedia confers a higher-level comprehensive professional profile (licenciatura) qualifying the graduates to perform professional functions with accuracy and sociotechnological actuality in the different domains of culture, particularly in the plastic arts domain.

Both subject fields are based on a number of varied skills designed to provide a wide range of career opportunities in similar circumstances to those offered by renowned European higher education institutions.

Introduction to painting practices – classical technologies and experimental practice. Development of the speculation ability enabling articulation between project, execution and critics. Workshop proposals seek to promote an experimental and speculative attitude that can value the creative process itself.

Prerequisites Basic knowledge of painting and drawing.

Course contents Introduction: space in pictorial language and its interrelationships. Painting equipments and materials. Reading methods: representation and presentation; enhancement and levelling. Two-dimensional structure – composition: plan/framing/weight. Three-dimensional structure: perspective. Colour: contrast/harmony/properties/dimension. Time/movement/rythm perception and representation. Space and personal expression. Space in human figure. Effects and tricks: textures and volumes.

The students should gain aesthetical autonomy and improve technical skills. They should also make theoretical research so that they can position their work in the chronological sequence of Western Art from the cultural, social and artistic point of view.

Prerequisites Basic knowledge of painting techniques.

Course contents The first work will be inspired in a work of art from the Western Art History. Students will have to carry out 12 works, 8 on an 80X100 cm tensioned or rigid canvas, on acrylics or oil. Works will be produced according to the students’ individual choices and they will periodically report and justify their options on the course of execution.

Film and video structure: pre-production, production and post-production. Script and storyboard. Basic film production and lighting exercises. Digital capture and edition. Video and audio output formatting (DVD authoring). Execution of authoring short films in which the student’s technical knowledge articulates with his/her own theoretical interests.
