A simple guide to making your will. Step 1 - Find your Solicitor or Will WriterMaking a will can often feel complicated and daunting. However, it is important and it ensures that your estate goes where you want it to.

Getting a meeting with someone is the first step. Please find details of solicitors that are involved in our Make a Will Month, in this leaflet.

Step 2 - Write your willBefore your appointment, you should prepare a few things:

• Choose an executor. This is a person or persons who will carry out the wishes of your will – they should be people you know well.

• Put together a list of assets and liabilities. You could list all the assets that you own (such as the value of your house, car, savings, jewellery, stocks and shares and other possessions) and what you owe (such as the outstanding balance of your mortgage, overdrafts, bank loans and other debts).

• List any specific bequests you want to leave, together with the full names and addresses of who you want to benefit. These can be:• Specific gifts or items.• A residuary gift. This is a gift of a portion of your estate once debts have

been paid and any fixed gifts have been given. You can choose to divide the estate into percentages, then they won’t devalue over time.

• A pecuniary gift. This is a specific amount of money. The value may decrease with inflation over time.

Step 3 - Make a donationAt your appointment, your solicitor will give you the opportunity to make a donation to Willen Hospice in return for their will writing service. The suggested minimum donation for a codicil (a change to your will) is £40, a basic will £90 and a pair of mirror wills £140.
