Joyce Heaton and Joe Dinnan invited me to join them at the North Port Community Resource Center, a weekday training facility for adults with developmental disabilities. Joyce and Joe have been allowed to conduct a weekly Service there, teaching them music, Bible stories, a craft, and prayer. This ministry began years ago as these special folks were picked up by our church bus or brought to Sunday School. Joyce and Joe (and others) would teach them during that hour. When God closed that door, they prayed and He opened this new opportunity where they have earned the trust of the Director and are welcomed each week. I intend to recommend that this ministry become one of our Community Connections, in fulfillment of our Ten Year Vision. If you know Joyce, you know of her zeal for this ministry. She recently had the idea of purchasing t-shirts to give the adults for Christmas. She told me that she and (her husband) Bob would print them at their company, but wondered if there were finances from our budget to help with the costs. Without hesitation, I said “yes!” You see, the Church allows me a discretionary fund for opportunities like this. Today, I submitted the $220 check request to our Finance secretary. Since the money comes from our tithes and offerings, I wanted you to know one of the gifts WE are giving to the Lord – these t-shirts. Joyce will get us pictures when she gives them. When I visited the shelter, my heart was blessed to observe Joyce and Joe singing Hide ‘em in your Heart songs, teaching God’s Word, and praying for them. Though an observer, I was welcomed by many open hearts – they love to hug! We’ll learn more about this ministry in the new year. I suspect some of you may be led to volunteer. For now, let us rejoice in this simple way we are showing God’s love to our neighbors. Merry Christmas! 12:30pm Hispanic Service Fellowship Hall Connection Counter.
