By Michael Hart M ANY YEARS AGO, the U.S. Depart- ment of Commerce declared the RSNA annual meeting an official international trade fair. However, anybody who strolls its exhibit hall aisles this week or sits in on one of the hundreds of conference sessions, knows that’s practically an understate- ment—the growth of the international com- ponent of the meeting has paralleled that of medicine itself as RSNA worked toward its centennial gathering. This year, attendees and exhibiting com- panies from more than 130 countries will visit McCormick Place, representing nearly 40 percent of the total attendance. The larg- est foreign contingents will likely come as little surprise to many: Last year, France had the largest number of attendees from outside North America, followed by Japan, Germany, Brazil and the United Kingdom. But the wide range of other countries that send radiology professionals to Chi- cago every November may surprise some. That list includes countries like Afghani- stan, Nepal and Zimbabwe. “Over the years, RSNA has seen an absolute burgeon- ing of international participation, not only by interna- tional attendees, but by interna- tional exhibitors as well,” said Dana Smetherman, M.D., chair of the RSNA Technical Exhibits Committee. In fact, this year, there will be six coun- try pavilions in which every exhibitor in the group is from an individual country: Korea, Canada (specifically, the province of Ontario), Germany, France, China and Japan. “It’s sort of like the world’s fair idea,” Dr. Smetherman said. There are good reasons for the inter- national presence that makes the RSNA annual meeting the most important place in the world for the radiology profession this week. For one, Dr. Smetherman said, “It was never just an American meeting. Our roots have always been as an interna- tional organization.” Along with that is the fact that, to a greater extent than most medical special- ties, radiology is international in nature, Dr. Smetherman added. “So many of the vendors who come to RSNA are interna- tional companies that do business in many countries,” she said. And part of the reason for that is the intense focus on technology that is inher- ent with radiology. “You have to think of who your audience is and why that would be,” Dr. Smetherman said. “It’s because of our heritage and because of the kind of specialty that we are.” The international presence at the RSNA annual meeting is also a byproduct of the attention the association itself gives to professionals in other countries by way of several important programs: • The Derek Harwood-Nash International Fellowship program, which brings prom- ising international scholars to North American institutions to study each year. • The Introduction to Research for Interna- tional Young Academics program, which encourages young radiologists from out- side North America to pursue careers in academic radiology. • The RSNA/AUR/APDR/SCARD Edu- cation Research Development Grant program, which provides research opportunities to individuals throughout the world who are looking to advance radiology education. • The International Visiting Professor Program, which sponsors small teams of visiting professors to lecture at national or regional radiology meetings in devel- oping nations. • International Radiology Outreach Resourc- es website, which encourages participation in international education and outreach efforts by RSNA members, subspecialty societies and medical and relief agencies. Many years ago, the U.S. Depart-ment of Commerce declared the RSNA annual meeting an official

international trade fair. However, anybody who strolls its

exhibit hall aisles this week or sits in on one of the hundreds of conference sessions, knows that’s practically an understate-ment—the growth of the international com-ponent of the meeting has paralleled that of medicine itself as RSNA worked toward its centennial gathering.

This year, attendees and exhibiting com-panies from more than 130 countries will visit McCormick Place, representing nearly 40 percent of the total attendance. The larg-est foreign contingents will likely come as little surprise to many: Last year, France had the largest number of attendees from outside North America, followed by Japan, Germany, Brazil and the United Kingdom.

But the wide range of other countries that send radiology professionals to Chi-cago every November may surprise some. That list includes countries like Afghani-stan, Nepal and Zimbabwe.

“Over the years, RSNA has seen an absolute burgeon-ing of international participation, not only by interna-tional attendees, but by interna-tional exhibitors as well,” said Dana Smetherman, M.D., chair of the RSNA Technical Exhibits Committee.

In fact, this year, there will be six coun-try pavilions in which every exhibitor in the group is from an individual country: Korea, Canada (specifically, the province of Ontario), Germany, France, China and Japan. “It’s sort of like the world’s fair idea,” Dr. Smetherman said.

There are good reasons for the inter-national presence that makes the RSNA annual meeting the most important place in the world for the radiology profession this week. For one, Dr. Smetherman said, “It was never just an American meeting. Our roots have always been as an interna-tional organization.”

Along with that is the fact that, to a greater extent than most medical special-ties, radiology is international in nature, Dr. Smetherman added. “So many of the vendors who come to RSNA are interna-tional companies that do business in many countries,” she said.

And part of the reason for that is the intense focus on technology that is inher-ent with radiology. “You have to think of who your audience is and why that would be,” Dr. Smetherman said. “It’s because of our heritage and because of the kind of specialty that we are.”

The international presence at the RSNA annual meeting is also a byproduct of the attention the association itself gives to professionals in other countries by way of several important programs:

• The Derek Harwood-Nash International Fellowship program, which brings prom-ising international scholars to North American institutions to study each year.

• The Introduction to Research for Interna-tional Young Academics program, which encourages young radiologists from out-side North America to pursue careers in academic radiology.

• The RSNA/AUR/APDR/SCARD Edu-cation Research Development Grant program, which provides research opportunities to individuals throughout the world who are looking to advance radiology education.

• The International Visiting Professor Program, which sponsors small teams of visiting professors to lecture at national

or regional radiology meetings in devel-oping nations.

• International Radiology Outreach Resourc-es website, which encourages participation in international education and outreach efforts by RSNA members, subspecialty societies and medical and relief agencies.

GrayhillBOOTH 1502

Touch Panels

Instinct means exceptionally precise control with superior optical performance. With high-density touch differentiation, Instinct Touch Panels from Grayhill are highly sensitive to recognizing gestures, enabling precise control of touch icons. The panels are ready to integrate with a built-in MS Windows driver that recognizes and reacts to all of the standard gestures, including pan, click, swipe, rotate and zoom. But what really sets Instinct Touch Panels apart is Grayhill’s ability to optically bond both the LCD and protective cover glass in house. With a clear adhesive layer bonding the LCD, touch panel and top glass, air space and any chance for air pockets is completely eliminated. That means no air gaps that produce reflections and allow glass to flex. The result is superior mechanical perfor-mance with the highest possible optical clarity. Available in a variety of standard sizes, Instinct Touch Panels can also be constructed to custom dimensions.

Intrasense SABOOTH 8138

Diagnosis and Follow-up Workflow

Intrasense is pleased to announce the enrichment of the oncology modules on its Myrian® software platform for image-based diagnostics and follow-up workflow solu-tions. Clinical applications such as Myrian XP-Breast and Myrian XP-Prostate now offer perfusion quantitative models and powerful structured reporting capabilities such as automatic generation of BI-RADS and PI-RADS. This cutting-edge technol-ogy provides automation and consistent results between users, generating accurate findings and a faster workflow and time savings experience, while following the guidelines from scientific societies. These solutions integrate with health information systems and reports and enhance inter- and intradepartmental communications.

VuCOMP, Inc.BOOTH 4172

CAD for Mammography

VuCOMP will showcase the latest enhance-ments to its M-Vu® System. M-Vu CAD for

mammography is the first system proven effective in an FDA-approved reader study and its newest advancements provide radi-ologists with a substantial reduction in false positive marks, improved sensitivity, faster processing time, enhanced workflow and improved parallel architecture. In addition, VuCOMP will display a “works in prog-ress” CAD solution for 3D breast tomo-synthesis. M-Vu Breast Density advances the science of automated breast density assessment by adding a critical dimension to the analysis of dense breast tissue. The VuCOMP density category, analogous to the BI-RADS category, is now correlated to not only the amount, but also the distribution—actual dispersion—of fibroglandular tissue, providing radiologists with a consistent and accurate result.

DR Systems, Inc.BOOTH 6113

Spellman High Voltage Electronics Corp.BOOTH 7756

X-ray GeneratorSpellman High Voltage introduces its new DR generator. Based on the proven HFe family of 40 to 80 kW X-ray generators, the new HFeS X-ray generator shares core fea-tures of the HFe but has enhanced capability due to a new K60 windows-based proces-sor, an easy to use DLL, Can or RS232 interface, and a new programmable high speed starter—all combined in a compact cabinet. These new interface/control fea-tures provide seamless integration with the latest DR technology. The HFeS offers an easy to install, service and upgrade design that is compatible with industry leading flat panel detectors and AEC sensors. The new HFeS has an expandable X-ray tube library and unlimited APR techniques.

ATLAIM CorporationBOOTH 3773

Versatile Flat-panel Detector

ATLAIM introduces the first cassette-sized, 17″ x 17″, ultra-light, wired and wireless, ultra heavy duty flat-panel detector with all-day battery life. ATLAIM creates not just new diagnostic radiology (DR) technology, but a new category of wireless DR with the ATAL 9. This new technology removes all the impracticalities of wireless DR. Its many features— long battery time (more than 12 hours of continuous use with one charge), light weight (5 pounds for a 17″ x 17″ detector), cassette size, AED, ACC, high-speed wireless data transmission and 300-pound weight bearing capabil-ity—make it as easy to use and install as CR with all of the upside of DR. A simple HDMI cable instantly transforms the panel from wireless to tethered. For the first time, the ATAL 9 offers optional multi-frame (6-24 fps) capability in the same thin, durable package.

Image Information Systems Europe Ltd.BOOTH 2565B

Relevant Prior Studies Management

IMAGE Information Systems showcases an intelligent radiology reading station that automatically presents relevant prior studies for the same patient across all modalities. While most PACS compare headers describing anatomical areas in the study description, iQ-VIEW PRO

finds appropriate studies even when the descriptions vary. For example, other PACS software differentiates descrip-tions such as R-Shoulder, Shoulder-R, Humerus, Arm or Upper Extremity and would fail to display these differently named studies for comparison. IMAGE has solved this challenge by develop-ing intelligent searches that understand diverse descriptions and rank results according to relevance. For example, a prior MRI–Brain performed for dementia would automatically be offered when reading a current CT-Head undertaken for evaluation of a cranio-cerebral trauma.

All of those programs have contributed to make the event each year in Chicago the global meeting place it has become. “Not only do we see individuals coming from other countries, but leaders from other coun-tries coming to RSNA,” Dr. Smetherman

pointed out. “I was at a dinner last year and the person sitting next to me was the leader of the radiology society of France. Every-body needs to be here.”

As RSNA and its annual meeting launches into its second hundred years, there is little doubt the specialty it serves

and the event will continue to grow in inter-national status. “As many people say, the world is flat again,” Dr. Smetherman said.

“To ignore the fact that, in our current age with information and the speed of transmission of information being what it is, the world is going to continue to get

smaller. It’s going to get easier for us to transmit ideas across the entire world.”

Fusion ImagingVirtual Navigator is Esaote’s revolution-ary technology for fusion imaging with CT, MR and PET side-by-side with real-time ultrasound. The real-time visual-ization of ultrasound and CT/MR/PET imaging is obtained by connecting MyLabTwice to an electromagnetic tracking system, which informs the operator about the position and the orientation of the probe in a 3D environment, ensuring fast, easy and accurate scanning. Virtual Navigator takes all the advantages of different modali-ties and provides a real-time, low-cost and radiation-free solution that aims to guide operators in diagnosis, everyday clinical practice, interventional procedures, research and teaching. In addition, the virtual biopsy and intelligent positioning features enable reaching even difficult targets quickly and accurately with a virtual needle tracking system. This offers infinite possibilities for patient monitoring, diagnosis and follow-up and is an excellent solution for interven-tional radiology, urology, neurosurgery, vascular, musculoskeletal, joint injection, pathology and pain management medicine.

Software TestingQualiTest is the world’s second-largest pure play QA and software testing company. QA and testing is all that we do. With vast

ences. The system is constructed in a poly-gon structure with lutetium-yttrium oxyor-thosilicate (LYSO) crystal arrays mounted on a position-sensitive photomultiplier. The diameter of the detector ring is 166 mm and the axial length is 128 mm. The transaxial FOV of PEMi is 110 mm. Reconstructed image resolution at the center of FOV is more than 2 mm. A clinical experiment was performed to verify its ability in practical applications, especially in detecting small tumors (less than 1 cm). Results indicate that PEMi provides better resolution in the detection of millimeter-sized breast tumors. The smallest lesion detected by PEMi was 3 mm. Furthermore, PEMi has a number of advantages, such as the ability to detect minute lesions, accurate lesion localization and biopsy guidance.COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY
