Rev. Dr. Joey Shelton, Senior Pastor
A Grateful Lent
B rother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk gave a Ted Talk that has been viewed over
4,000,000 times (https://www.ted.com/talks/david_steindl_rast_want_to_
be_happy_be_grateful). During World War II Brother David was a teen in Austria. As bombs
dropped, in the midst of war and pain, he developed a keen sense of gratefulness. He has dedi-
cated his life to approaching life from a spirit of gratitude and sharing it with others.
We certainly are not grateful for things that are violent, evil, and destructive. But we can develop
a sense of gratitude in the midst of such.
Gratefulness is the heart of prayer. Gratefulness is an approach to life in fullness, a life of sur-
prise, contemplation, faith, of our searching and then realizing that in our searching we are
found and in that finding, we are connected to God and one another.
Whatever happiness you seek, search for joy. Whatever joy you seek, search for gratitude. You
may discover that as you stop, reflect, then go; gratitude will find you and joy will burst forth and
happiness will reside more often. Brother David says it is like waking up in the morning. It is a
process. We don’t wake up once and for all. Wakefulness is not limited. It makes us alive. It is
risky. It opens opportunities for love. May we risk a Lenten journey of awakening to God’s love,
of Jesus’ grace, of the Holy Spirit’s provision? Perhaps then we will stop taking so much for
granted and become more and more surprised at the God-signs all around us.
Gratefully yours in Christ,
March 2016

CONFIRMATIONCONFIRMATIONCONFIRMATION Through confirmation, young people in the church get to explore
why we as United Methodists believe what we believe and do what
we do. We often say that this is a time when they are invited to
claim their baptism. In a season of life where children are already
mapping out their identities, pastors and mentors walk alongside
our sixth graders as they take ownership of their faith, making it
their own rather than reflecting what parents and friends believe.
This process is filled with hard questions, new insights, hilarious games, and delicious snacks as students
meet weekly to discuss different aspects of the faith, from creation to sin to grace to church history.
Rev. Emily Sanford has beautifully coordinated this process for our 2016 confirmands, and we got to share
her with young people from all over the Mississippi Conference at this year’s confirmation retreat at Camp
Wesley Pines. Pastor Emily and Rev. MJ Kirby of St. Paul United
Methodist in Ocean Springs and the St. Paul youth praise band,
Unwavering, led students in worship from Friday, January 29
through Sunday, January 31. Between services, students met
with leaders from across the conference for workshops on a
variety of topics, including the sacraments. After naming the
two sacraments we celebrate in the United Methodist Church
(Baptism and the Lord’s Supper), the leader asked the class why
we do these things. Specifically, why do we baptize people?
What does it mean to be baptized? The kids gave several great
answers but there was one in particular that touched my heart:
“Baptism means that we know the church loves us.”
What a testimony! When anyone is baptized in the Methodist
Church, from infants to adults, the pastor makes an invitation
to the congregation on behalf of our new brother or sister. “I
commend this person to your love and care,” the pastor tell us.
“Do all in your power to increase their faith, confirm their
hope, and perfect them in love.” Through confirmation, our
children begin to see how the church has been living up to this
challenge throughout their lives. As we continue to pray for the
children, families, and faith friends in this year’s confirmation
class, may we each claim our baptism and continue to reflect
Christian love through our relationships with one another and
the world. Rev. Emily Sanford leads the confirmands Sunday
afternoon in the Foundery at Galloway.
This year’s confirmands and some of their adult
leaders enjoyed time together at the retreat.

YOUTH AUCTION Thank you Thank you all for attending the Youth Auction! And a special thank you to those who went above and beyond to make the 2016 auction take place.
Thank you to all who donated live auction items. You gave from your handiwork, artistry, and your personal getaways to support our Galloway youth.
Thank you to those who opened their hearts, homes, and shared their creativity and generosity hosting sign up events.
Thank you to those of you who purchased, re-gifted, and parted with sentimental treasures to help change the lives of our young people.
Thank you to Jim Wilkirson who, once again, transformed each live auction item into an entertaining, edge-of-your-seat, celebration, which he has faithfully done forEVER!
Thank you to Corinne Sampson and Elizabeth Henry who enthusiastically jumped into their characters to entertain us at the end of the Youth Auction.
Thank you to Demmie Moore for our lovely table decorations.
Thanks to Joe and the youth for their hands-on help and creativity. Thank you to Renee Jones, Alice Rein, Alice Clement (she makes ALL of our beautiful posters!), Catherine Wiygul, and Susan Richards. These 5 women literally jumped in and did the work of twelve! Thanks, ladies, for bringing in the dinners and live auction items, for all your footwork and phone calls.
And lastly, thank you to Eddie and Vicki Prosser. Vicki did a beautiful job with Demmie on table decorations. And Eddie was so impassioned about this auction, I do believe he could have done the whole thing alone with one hand tied behind his back. Eddie’s attention to detail assured that everything was done, nothing was forgotten, and no stone was left unturned.
We hope you all had a great time. Thanks to your enthusiasm and dedication to supporting our youth, our
totals for the 2016 auction item sales were $16,511.00.

FACES OF GRACE inspired by Mark Wall
Featuring
MICHAEL LEWIS
I don’t like the shelters. It gives me the prison feeling, you know being
inside four walls that are not my four walls. Lots of people telling you what
to do, rules that don’t mean nothing. It reminds me of prison and I can’t
stay there. It brings up all those feelings of way back when I was in prison.
I’d be satisfied with one of those little store houses that people put in
their backyard. As long as they leave me alone, I’d cut the grass and take
care of it. I could live there. I could not live in a 75 year old broke down
house with rent going higher and higher and having to fix it cause the man
won’t fix it. After prison I never had a real job cause with prison on you
they don’t have much to do with you, you know with a felony and all. I have not worked much since I got out of prison.
I did have a job with a man using a pressure hose washing off co-cola trucks but the police caused me to lose that job.
You have to leave the shelter at 5 am. I was in Smith Park waiting to see a lady in the Catholic Dioceses. I told them I
had business and they told me that if I did not get out of the park and leave downtown they were going to take me to
jail. I said, take me to jail cause I have every right to be here and I have business down town. They took me to jail and I
lost my job. I can’t work now because of arthritis in my knees and back. I was in the Army in 1977 and I am going to
the VA to get medical care for my knees.
I’m not satisfied with the way I live. I don’t like the way I live. I don’t like peoples’ negativity and I don’t want this
negativity in my life. Here is an example. My grandmother rented a one bedroom shotgun house. She paid rent for 42
years until she died. She paid for that house. That was her house. When she died, I was mad. I did not want anybody
living in her house. I thought to myself she paid for that house. I was going to set a fire but low and behold the lord
works in mysterious ways. One day I went over to that house and it had split in half. The roof fell in and the house
split in half. That was the lord keeping me out of jail. He had a better plan for me. That is the one time I knew the
lord. That’s my answer. I had negativity about my grandmother’s house. The lord split that house and kept me out of
trouble. He took that negativity out of my life.
In my heart I have no discrimination for any one’s race or color but in my mind I have to. They want to know you when
you are spending money with them but they won’t speak to you on the street.
Grace Place Corner The heart of Grace Place ministry is the Spirit-filled relationships that form between guests, volunteers, and
staff as we all come together around the table. You’re invited to share in this communion and get to know
a current Grace Place guest through a photo and short biography each month. As you’re introduced to
these neighbors through their stories, make sure to extend warm greetings when you meet around the
church, and plan to join us at 8:30am on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday to enjoy breakfast with
our sisters and brothers in Christ.
