I started in this business at the age of 6 working for my dad’s company, Naikoon
Contracting Ltd., in my small hometown of Masset BC, on Haida Gwaii. The summers
of my childhood and youth were totally consumed by construction, I loved it. As the
passion for carpentry and business grew each summer,
I never once had to consider what I was going to do for a living - this was it.
By 14, I was able to pick up a set of blue prints and lay out the structure of a simple
home and had learned the required skills to be able put it together. At 20, after
successfully completing my Red Seal Carpentry apprenticeship, constructing some
of the most complex homes in the country, I started a company of my own in
North Vancouver. After many successful years, my partner bought me out of that
business which launched the idea of resurrecting Naikoon Contracting Ltd. After
years of retirement, Terry Geluch gave me the OK to re-launch Naikoon, and in 2009
we opened up shop in North Vancouver with one thing on our mind - sustainable
construction.
Our quest to build the greenest, most unique homes on the North Shore, and beyond,
has been nothing less than a huge ongoing success. My passion for innovation and
changing the way we build and think is what launched The Midori Uchi Project. It was
created to challenge ourselves not to just meet our already ultra green standards,
but to exceed them. This home covers all aspects of green building; site sustainability,
use of local resources, indoor air quality, premium building envelope, stringent waste
reduction, and the icing on the cake - it produces more power than it consumes.

RAMMED EARTH WALLS Why reinvent the wheel – or in this case the wall? An ancient building method, rammed earth walls have been a sustainable and natural building process for thousands of years. Using local materials, they are built to last for genera-tions with minimal maintenance, and are earth-quake, flood, and fire resistant.

Only low, and no VOC paints and products have been used in the home. This includes, paints, adhesives, floor finishes, and formaldehyde free panel products, all of which improve indoor air quality, and reduce health and allergy risks. At the end of the project, all doors are left open for a total of 24 hours which flushes any smells, off gases from the home, and completes the healthy-build process.

Midori Uchi’s superior airtightness is a combi-nation of advanced wall and roof construction along with triple glazed fiberglass windows and doors which means substantial energy savings and lower heating bills for you.

The home is heated by way of air to water heat pump through in-floor radiant piping. This highly efficient way of heating also does the domestic hot water for the home through heat recovery. The system can be reversed in the summer months and provide cooling through 2 in-floor fan coils, which operate using only 3 watts of energy. Powered by Cat 5 cabling, these units cool the home by way of cold water.
Over 30 sensors are buried in the floors and drywall throughout the home which talk to the automated controls system, which can be accessed remotely from anywhere with an internet connection. Set it and forget for ultimate comfort, and efficiency as the smart system will pick up on your living patterns, and optimize efficiency. Schedule and vaca-tion setting are easily programmed so you are not wasting energy when you are in the home.
