BE THE # NEXT...Quantity surveyor,like robyn fraser
Robyn Fraser, from Sedgefield, has ambitions to be a quantity surveyor, a vital and high responsibility profession within the construction industry. After completing her first year on the Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment course as a full-time student, Robyn gained a position as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor with international company Interserve, who were impressed by her progress and suggested she continue with her studies part-time. Robyn found the College more than willing to give her the flexibility she needed to do this, and next year she progresses to HNC level, with a view to going on to a degree at Northumbria University.
...carpenter & Joiner,like tommy Johnson
Tommy Johnson, 36, left school at the age of 16, keen to start earning money. It was a decision that felt right to him at the time but later came back to haunt him, as he moved around from “one dead end job to another”, because he didn’t have many qualifications and no real focus on what he wanted to do. When his wife decided to come to Hartlepool College to gain GCSEs (and has since progressed to Access to Education), her positive experiences inspired Tommy to follow her lead and enrol on the College’s Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery. The course fired up his ambition, and Tommy has now secured an Apprenticeship. Tommy said “It really is never too late to make a difference to your life”.

His hard work and commitment throughout the year was outstanding and did not go unnoticed, with Ryan representing HCFE in numerous national competitions and cooking in the College’s own Flagship Restaurant. He has since moved to London to further his career, from where he sends back frequent news about his successes and new acquaintances, such as this “selfie” (inset) with top chef and TV presenter Michel Roux Jnr.

Lauren Williams, from Billingham, enrolled on the College’s National Diploma in Health and Social Care, successfully completing the course in 2011 before progressing to a BSc (Hons) degree in Nursing Studies with guidance and support from Student Services. When Lauren gave birth to a little boy, she was delighted to be offered a flexible approach to her studies by the College to allow her to continue towards her ambition. As part of her HE course she gained work experience across the region, mostly within the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust. The combination of higher study and valuable practical experience has helped Lauren to secure a full-time position as a Paediatric Nurse at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Maria Hockburn, 37, came to the UK from Hungary in 2002 with an ambition to work on cruise ships, for which she needed to be able to speak English. She quickly learned the new language and gained employment on a P&O cruise vessel, during which time she met a merchant seaman from Hartlepool. The couple married and started a family. Maria decided that she wanted to work in primary education as a teaching assistant. She enrolled on a Level 2 education course, quickly progressing to Level 3 and then finally Foundation Degree Supporting and Learning, gaining practical experience at Eldon Grove Academy. Last year she also completed GCSE English with a grade B, and is currently studying GCSE Mathematics.

BE THE # NEXT...managing director,like lewis marr
In 2011 Lewis joined Hartlepool College as part of the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Exercise programme to complement his job as a School Sport Coordinator in Bishop Auckland. However, not long after starting the course austerity cuts led to the school’s sport structure being reformed, leaving Lewis without a job. Encouraged and guided by College staff he set up his own company, Education Enterprise, which specialises in delivering sport and PE to primary schools and the local community. Lewis commented “It would have been very easy for me to be down and beaten by losing my job, but the enthusiasm and support from the sports team at Hartlepool College filled me with the confidence to go it alone. And I am so glad I did, I couldn’t be happier with the results”.

BE THE # NEXT...world champion,like savannah marshall
No, you did read that right - from humble beginnings in Hartlepool, Savannah Marshall has competed around the globe as a middleweight boxer, winning World and Commonwealth gold and representing her country as part of TeamGB at London 2012 and Rio 2016. Savannah is proof that there are no limits to what you can do when you have the right skills, discipline, and a hard working attitude. Studying on HCFE’s BTEC National Diploma in Sport and now at Foundation Degree level, Savannah is also an elite mentor to other College sports students. She commented “I believe that if you are dedicated and motivated and have the will to achieve then you will achieve your dreams. I really couldn’t have done it without HCFE, and I’m really happy to give something back, where it all started, helping any way I can.”

exploding the myths
A lot of adults feel that studying at HE level is somehow beyond them - that they’ve “left it too late”, or that it will be too expensive, too much hassle, or won’t fit in with their family and work commitments. The simple truth is that adults returning to study often make exceptional learners, bringing with them a vast array of transferrable skills and attributes gained from work, family and other life experiences.
With its own dedicated centre, Hartlepool College works closely with Teesside University to make HE convenient, accessible and affordable for those adults who want to pursue that path.
part-time course fees
From September 2016, the course fees for the College’s part-time HE offer start from £1975 per year.
full-time course fees
From September 2016, the course fee for the College’s full-time HE offer is £6000 per year.

additional financial information
loansLoans are financial products students will have to pay back. For 2015-16 there are two main types of loans available for HE students:
tuition fee loanYou don’t have to pay your fees upfront. The tuition fee loan is available to all eligible students to cover the full cost of fees each year. This loan is not means tested so any eligible student who secures a place at university can use the loan to cover the fees each year regardless of their household income.
With the exception of students wishing to study a PGCE, if you already have a degree-level qualification, you may not be entitled to a tuition fee loan. Please contact the Student Services for further details (see page 2).
