A guide to Kaiser On-the-Job®
Modifi ed duty makes medical sense…and is good business practice
An organization’s greatest asset is its workforce. When employees can’t work because of illness or injury, they and the company suffer losses in income and morale.
Short-term modifi ed duty can contribute to quality medical treatment for your worker. And it can be an important way to reduce disability-related expenses.
Kaiser Permanente is committed to providing the best possible medical care for your workers. Our return-to-work focus benefi ts both employers and employees by keeping employees productive, safe, and on the job.
Building a modifi ed-duty programA good modifi ed-duty program helps keep workers more active and in better shape than if they were staying at home. This means that your workers will be less likely to be reinjured after they go back to full duty.
For your worker’s safety, it is important to design a plan that follows the recommendations the doctor has written on the Kaiser On-the-Job Return to Work Form. All workers treated by Kaiser On-the-Job care providers receive a Kaiser On-the-Job Return to Work Form at each visit.
Modifi ed duty is an important part of your employee’s medical treatment. For most sick or injured workers, the best way to recover is to return to some form of safe, productive work while they are healing.
Work as medical treatment
What’s in a modifi ed-duty plan?
Under modifi ed duty, you and your employee work together to design temporary assignments for the employee to do until he or she is able to return to full duty. Your company may have a modifi ed-duty coordinator or someone in your human resources department who can help with this process.
Your employee’s Kaiser On-the-Job Return to Work Form will help you to identify duties that the employee can do. Here are some general principles that can help you develop modifi ed-duty assignments. The assignment should:
■ Help build your employee’s morale.
■ Protect your employee by following the suggestions and restrictions the doctor has written on the form.
■ Reduce indirect expenses for employee replacement and retraining.
■ Have value to both you and your employee.

Emergency care is for emergency medical conditions. Emergency medical conditions are conditions in which the immediate onset of symptoms, including severe pain, leads a prudent layperson to believe that immediate care is needed:
■ to avoid serious impairment of organs or bodily functions, or
■ because there is a serious threat to the health of the individual or a fetus (unborn child).
