INTRODUCTION

The Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library

The Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library was established in 1985 with major funding

from the Herman T. and Phenie R. Pott Foundation, a foundation with special interests in education

and the preservation of river heritage. The Pott Library is an important national resource for

scholars, river aficionados, and students of America’s rivers because of its unique and extensive

literary, archival and photographic collections of inland waterways materials.

Archival materials in the Pott Library do not circulate, but may be used by researchers at the library

during reading room hours. Researchers may arrange for copies of documents and photographs

from the curator of the Pott Library for a fee, according to the St. Louis Mercantile Library’s Image

and Price List.

The St. Louis Mercantile Library Association owns the publication rights to the unique materials in

the collections of the Pott Library. Any materials from this collection used or quoted for publication

HISTORY OF GREENE LINE STEAMERS INCORPORATED

Gordon C. Greene purchased the H.K. Bedford in 1890 in Newport, Ohio, where she ran in the

Pittsburgh-Wheeling trade. The first boat built by Greene Line, the Greenwood, was built in 1898.

By 1904, the company’s fleet included the Evergreen, the Greenland, the Kanawha, the Greenwood,

the Chilo, the Courier, the Tacoma, and the Henry M. Stanley. The Greenland made three trips to St.

Louis that year, for the World’s Fair. A huge fire at Cincinnati in 1922 claimed many boats, including

the Star, Tacoma, Island Queen and Chris Greene, leaving the line with one steamboat, the

Greenwood. Gordon C. Greene decided to build the steel hulled Tom Greene, which was completed

in 1923 and named after Gordon’s son. In 1925 another steel hulled vessel, the steamer Chris Green

was built.

Gordon C. Green passed away at the age of 65 in 1927, and his body was carried back to Newport,

Ohio aboard the Tom Green. Four years later, with Gordon’s son Chris at the helm, the company

bought the Louisville and Cincinnati Packet Company, and in doing so secured the downriver trade.

1935 saw the purchase of the Cape Girardeau, which was renamed the Gordon C. Greene, and in

1936 the Greene Line added the steamers Evergreene, Carybird, and Ouachita.

Captain Chris Greene died in 1944, of a heart attack. Captain Tom Greene took over the business.

Difficult times appeared in 1947. The Carybird was sold and freight business was discontinued on

the Strs. Tom and Chris Greene. However, that same year the Delta Queen was purchased, which

would soon become known as the flagship of the Greene Line. To get to Ohio, the Delta Queen,

which was located in Sacramento, California, had to be towed through the Panama Canal. Once in

New Orleans, the Delta Queen continued under its own steam up the Mississippi and then the Ohio

Rivers, to her new home. Captain Mary Greene, the family matriarch, passed away aboard the Delta

Queen in 1949, and Captain Tom passed away a year later.

With the freight business drying up along America’s rivers, Tom’s widow, Letha was forced to sell

the steamers Evergreene, Chris, Tom, and Gordon. The Greene Line celebrated its 75th anniversary

in 1964, and soon thereafter (in 1969) was sold to Overseas National Airways (ONA).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTES

The Greene Line Collection traces the development of Green Line Steamers Incorporated, as well as

its antecedent companies through correspondence, financial documentation, business records,

photographs, blueprints and memorabilia. The years covered by the collection are the 1920s

through the 1950s.

Alphabetical arrangement has been employed where appropriate to facilitate usage. Most of the

collection is described at the folder level. Some of the collection is described at the box or item

level.

In addition, the collection boasts a sizeable amount of documentation and blueprints covering the

U.S. Lighthouse Tender Wakerobin, a vessel that was of personal interest to the previous collector of

the Greene Line Collection. When the Greene Line Collection was acquired, the materials regarding

the Wakerobin were included. The Wakerobin materials consist of correspondence, operational

records, and blueprints pertaining to the vessel from the 1920s through the 1950s.

Series 10

Supplemental Materials

During May, 2011, the Pott Library purchased additional items for the Greene Line Collection. Among these items

are correspondence; Steamer Delta Queen blueprints and “start-up” information; Steamer Gordon C. Greene items;

Greene Line ledgers and logs as well as serving items such as compotes.

The Steamer Wakerobin was not a Greene Line boat but blueprints from that vessel are included in this supplemental

series as well.
